The potential of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) in serving a useful purpose, e.g., supporting communication in paralyzed patients, hinges on the quality of the classification of the brain waves. This paper proposes a novel method to construct a classifier with improved generalization performance. A feature selection method is applied to features calculated from the EEG signals so that unnecessary or redundant features can be removed and only effective features are left for the classification task. Kernel support vector machines (kernel SVM) were used as a classifier and the best combinations of features were searched by backward stepwise selection, i.e., by eliminating unnecessary features one by one, and by evaluating the resulting generalization performance through cross validation. Experiments showed that the generalization performance of the classifier constructed from the best set of features was higher than that of the classifier using all features.

The active radar operation principle will face a rigorous challenge in modern electronics warfare, being a new direction finding and ranging technique development, the source of radiation of target must be requested possessing a silence manner for signal intelligence communication. This paper discusses the angle-only tracking algorithm for an over-flight missile by a consecutive measure to locate the position of target's emission source. The paper also concerned an important issue in terminal phase, about it was found that the chaff were dispersed from a target, it may cause an ambiguity when the passive ranging was applied and an active seeker was be turned on. It discusses an identification technique from the time domain viewpoint and to separate a target from ambiguity environments. Firstly, it use the IE method to estimate the position of a target. Secondly, it was considered the chaff effect with respect to the target in terminal course. A simulation results will then demonstrate that the accuracy of dynamics identification has been improved by the adaptive IE scheme, thus the proposed method was allowed the seeker to be armed with a more accurate estimate method.

The study of job shop scheduling is of great significance in theory and realism. This paper presents novel data mining algorithms for the extraction of knowledge from a large set of job shop schedules. The purposes of this work is to apply data mining methodologies to explore the patterns in the data generated by a genetic algorithm performing a scheduling operation and to develop a rule set scheduler which approximates the genetic algorithm's scheduler. These rules can duplicate the genetic algorithm's performance on an identical problem and provide solutions that are generally superior to a simple dispatching rule for similar problems. At the end of this paper, the experimental results have shown that the proposed approach has good performance with respect to the quality of solution and the speed of computation.

Left ventricle myocardial activity (LV) from volumetric images is commonly presented in a 2D format called a polar map. Few applications offer complete automation of the registration and sampling process, which may lead to biasing of the results by the user and increased variability. A fully automated process is described which includes two steps: reorientation of the data to a common LV reference frame, and registration of the LV using a deformable spline model. The software implementation of this algorithm consists of a graphical user interface (GUI) that enables the user to verify the process, and to intervene in cases where automation may fail. 135 PET images (consisting of several tracers, in rest and stress, and in humans and dogs) were processed and visually validated. All but one case (99.3%) were successfully handled by the automated process.

There are lots of attempts in automotive field to supersede mechanical parts with electrical ones owing to increasing needs of drivers' safety, comfort and convenience as well as recent tightened environmental regulation. In addition, continuous improvements of semiconductor technology make it speed up to use electric components instead of conventional mechanical and hydraulic ones. In accordance with these tendencies, the demand of electric power and energy used in vehicle has been increasing steadily, and it will cause overburden of conventional 14 V power generation and distribution system. A research on higher voltage system started in early 1990s and 42 V power system has been introduced for a future automotive power-net. In this paper, technical trend in energy storage system which implies one of the key technologies to implement 42 V power-net is reviewed, and development results of the improved energy storage system consisted of ultracapacitor, battery and management controllers are presented

It is critical to neutralize as much as possible the landing forces as well as to reserve certain portion of artillery fire power for follow-on fire support missions in counter amphibious landing operation. To solve the contradictory proposition a composite methodology of operations research applications is adopted and it integrates discrete time simulation, regression and experimental design. Through the proposed methodology the relationships among four fire power elements - TO and E, active ratio, fire rate and shells mix ratio - and four outcome attributes are clarified. An example of sixteen alternatives is discussed and quantitative information is revealed to support combat decision making.

Square law for lanchester type decapitation warfare

It has been 90 years since the Lanchester model of warfare was presented, and the model is well defined and is considered being able to provide consolidate mathematical foundation for modern warfare analysis. On the other hand, precisio strike makes decapitation strategy become reality in real war. By following studies on decapitation-type warfare, the connotation of 'decapitation' is refined to be the composite of "undermining the combat potential", "seizing the capital" and "regular combat". A new Lancheterian model is built based on combat effectiveness to describe the effects of the first two military operations on regular combat. Through appropriate assumptions, Lanchester square law and combat termination conditions are applied on the new decapitation model to assist analyzing overall combat outcomes, such as winner determination, surviving force levels of both sides and combat durations.

The one dimensional inverse heat conduction problems of the composite materials with the unknown boundary conditions are discussed. Base on the boundary temperature measurement, the system's unknown boundary conditions such as the time varying heat flux or heat transfer coefficient can be estimated by input estimation (IE) approach inversely and the transient response of the temperature of the composite materials is calculated at the same time. The IE includes Kalman filter (KF) and weighted recursive least-square estimator (WRLSE). The unknown boundary conditions are regarded as the unknown inputs. Kalman filter (KF) is linear recursive least square error covariance estimation and its purpose is to generate the recursive innovation sequence. Because this sequence contains bias or systematic errors caused by implicit unknown time-variant inputs and random errors from the measurement data. WRLSE is used to identify the unknown inputs. The methodology for estimating the time varying unknown heat flux, heat transfer coefficient and temperature distribution of the composite materials is also presented in this work. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately estimate the unknown heat flux, heat transfer coefficient and the temperature transient response of the composite materials.

Research and improvement on packet capture mechanism in linux for high-speed network

With the increasing enlargement of network scale and the rapid development of network techniques, large numbers of the network applications begin to appear. Packet capture plays an important role as one basic technique used in each field of the network applications. In a high-speed network, the heavy traffic of network transmission challenges the packet capture techniques. This paper does an in-depth analysis on the traditional packet capture mechanisms in Linux, and then measures the performance bottleneck in the process of packet capture. The methods for improving the packet capture performance are presented and an optimized packet capture scheme is also designed and implemented. The test demonstrates that the new packet capture mechanism (Libpacket) can greatly improve the packet capture performance of the network application systems in a high-speed network.

Recently, with the development of wireless communications and mobile computing, interest about mobile computing is rising. Mobile computing can be regarded as an environment where a user carries mobile devices, such as a PDA or a notebook, and shares resources with a server computer via wireless communications. A mobile database refers to a database which is used in these mobile devices. The mobile database can be used in the fields of insurance business, banking business, medical treatment, and so on. Especially, LBS(Location Based Service) which utilizes location information of users becomes an essential field of mobile computing. In order to support LBS in the mobile environment, there must be an Embedded Spatial MMDBMS(Main-Memory Database Management system) that can efficiently manage large spatial data in spatial mobile devices. Therefore, in this paper, we designed and implemented an Embedded Spatial MMDBMS, extended from the HSQLDB which is an existing MMDBMS for PC, to manage spatial data efficiently in spatial mobile devices. The Embedded Spatial MMDBMS adopted the spatial data model proposed by ISO(International Organization for Standardization), provided the arithmetic coding method that is suitable for spatial data, and supported the efficient spatial index which uses the MBR compression and hashing method suitable for spatial mobile devices. In addition, the system offered the spatial data display capability in lowperformance processors of spatial mobile devices and supported the data caching and synchronization capability for performance improvement of spatial data import/export between the Embedded Spatial MMDBMS and the GIS server.
