It is well-known that the values of symbolic variables may take various forms such as an interval, a set of stochastic measurements of some underlying patterns or qualitative multi-values and so on. However, the majority of existing work in symbolic data analysis still focuses on interval values. Although some pioneering work in stochastic pattern based symbolic data and mixture of symbolic variables has been explored, it still lacks flexibility and computation efficiency to make full use of the distinctive individual symbolic variables. Therefore, we bring forward a novel hierarchical clustering method with weighted general Jaccard distance and effective global pruning strategy for complex symbolic data and apply it to emitter identification. Extensive experiments indicate that our method has outperformed its peers in both computational efficiency and emitter identification accuracy.

Traditionally, complex engineering applications (CEAs), which consist of numerous components (software) and require a large amount of computing resources, usu- ally run in dedicated clusters or high performance computing (HPC) centers. Nowadays, Cloud computing system with the ability of providing massive computing resources and cus- tomizable execution environment is becoming an attractive option for CEAs. As a new type on Cloud applications, CEA also brings the challenges of dealing with Cloud resources. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of Cloud resource management research for CEAs. The survey puts forward two important questions: 1) what are the main chal- lenges for CEAs to run in Clouds? and 2) what are the prior research topics addressing these challenges? We summarize and highlight the main challenges and prior research topics. Our work can be probably helpful to those scientists and en- gineers who are interested in running CEAs in Cloud envi- ronment.

The ray and caustic features of the ricocheting propagation of decameter radio waves in the Earth's ionosphere have been studied. The rays and caustic structures of radio waves during trans-ionospheric channeled propagation of radiation from an elevated source are calculated using the bicharacteristics method. Ray oscillations arising during circumnavigation of the world have been studied. Using the extended bicharacteristic system method, the Jacobian of the ray flux divergence and, on its basis, the attenuation of the radio signal are calculated.
