The problem of containing pancyclic interconnection networks is an important research topic. An n-dimensional Mobius cube, MQ/sub n/, is a variant of hypercubes according to specific rules. In this paper, we prove that Mobius cubes are all pancyclic networks. Similarly, both an n-dimensional crossed cube, CQ/sub n/, and an n-dimensional twisted cube, TQ/sub n/, are also variants of hypercubes according to specific rules. Moreover although the pancyclic property of a crossed cube and a twisted cube had been proved, we propose an alternative proof of this property.

Multimedia applications have been desirable and attract a rapidly increasing number of network subscribers. However, their generated enormous amount of Internet traffic usually congests the network to cause the degradation of network utilization. Although multicast provides an efficient way for distributing multimedia information to a set of destinations simultaneously, the congestion still degrades the desired QoS (quality of service) of the on-going multicast connections especially if the group of multicast destinations is large and scattered. Hence, this paper proposes a novel adaptive multicast routing (AMRST) approach for satellite-terrestrial network (ST network) to provide reliable and adaptive multicast services to global subscribers. This approach decomposes the multicast delivery problem into two parts, (1) the construction of the multicast tree and (2) the maintenance of dynamic membership. The virtual hierarchical routing tree (VHRT) is proposed for constructing an efficient multicast tree and the re-routing scheme is for maintaining the multicast tree in an optimal routing cost once the membership, such as member joining or leaving, changes dynamically. The AMRST not only keeps the benefits of the traditional terrestrial multicast but also further promotes the multicasting performance by employing the satellite broadcasting capability. The simulation results demonstrate that the AMRST has excellent performance for the satellite-terrestrial network.

A multi-function phased array radar must search and track suspicious targets in its surveillance space in a real-time fashion. This paper targets one of the most important issues in the design of modern phased array radars: real-time dwell scheduling. We propose a rate-based approach to schedule radar dwells in a real-time fashion. We show how to reserve radar resources to guarantee the minimum radar operation without sacrificing the stability of the system. The strength of our approach is verified by a series of simulation experiments based a real phased array radar for air defense frigates.

A graph is pancyclic if it contains all cycles from lengths 4 to |V(G)|. An n-dimensional crossed cube, an important variation of hypercube denoted as CQ/sub n/, has been proved to be pancyclic because it contains all cycles whose lengths range from 4 to |V(CQ/sub n/)|. Since vertex and edge faults may occur when a network is used, it is practical and meaningful to evaluate the performance of a faulty network. Moreover the vertex fault-tolerant Hamiltonicity and the edge fault-tolerant Hamiltonicity measure the performances of the Hamiltonian properties in the faulty networks. From this fault-tolerant concept, we propose using the fault-tolerant pancyclicity of networks to measure the performance of faulty networks. In this paper we consider a faulty crossed n-cube with vertex and/or edge faults here. Let the faulty set F be a subset of V(CQ/sub n/)/spl cup/E(CQ/sub n/). We prove that any cycle of length l(4/spl les/l/spl les/|V(CQ/sub n/)|-f/sub /spl nu//) can be embedded into a faulty crossed n-cube CQ/sub n/-F with dilation 1, where |F|=f/sub /spl nu//+f/sub e/ is less than n-2, f/sub /spl nu// is the number of faulty vertices of F, f/sub e/ is the number of faulty edges of F, and n is greater than 2. The results can readily be used in the optimum embedding of a ring of the specified length in a faulty crossed cube.

In this paper we propose an interconnection scheme for the autonomous error-tolerant (AET) cell introduced in a paper by Valtonen et al. (2001). The objective here is to partition the system into identical, physically autonomous and highly configurable cells that can operate without outside control or synchronization. In billion transistor Network-on-Chip (NoC) circuits, an AET cell fabric could prove highly flexible and reliable, and allow for low replication costs, due to homogeneousity. However, many challenges persist before a useful system can be constructed: the need for (i) scalable long-distance communication-global bus wiring fits poorly into a homogeneous, symmetric fabric and limits scalability, (ii) flexible communication-cells in all directions, within a given range, should be accessible and (iii) self-synchronizing topologies, due to the absence of external synchronization; (iv) the interconnect scheme is to be implemented using near-future technology generations, and (v) the fabric should be efficient when constituting billions of cells.

A VLSI architecture dedicated to W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) baseband modem is described, with the main theme focused on the cell searcher and PIL (Prime InterLeaver). A search algorithm is refined for the cell searcher to minimize the circuit size, maintaining the operating throughput. In addition, a time-shared scheme is adopted for the turbo encoding/decoding, aiming at the maximization of the hardware sharing in the encoding/decoding process. Finally, implementation results are shown to demonstrate that the proposed architecture can contribute much toward the practical low-power implementation of W-CDMA baseband modem LSI.

Decision-aid system for survivability of damaged conventional military submarines

He obtained his Ph.D in naval architecture at Pusan National University Korea in 1995. His current research interests include artificial intelligence maritime safety damage survivability evacuation and computer simulation. He is a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers Society of Naval Architects of Korea Korea Information Science Society and Korea Intelligent Information System. JAEYONG LEE has served as an engineering duty officer a commander in Korea Naval Sea Systems Command for 20 years. He graduated from Korea Naval Academy in 1979 with a bachelor of science degree in electric engineering. He received a master of engineering degree in industrial engineering from Yeonse University in 1997 and a master of engineering degree in naval architecture from Chungnam National University in 2000. His current research interests include design and safety of submarine. KYUNG-HO LEE has served as a research engineer in Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering(KRISO)/KORDI for 11 years. He obtained his Ph.D in naval architecture at Seoul National University in 1998. His current research interests include artificial intelligence maritime safety and concurrent engineering. He is a member of the Society of Naval Architects of Korea

AEven small leakage in submarines can lead to serious consecutive damage, since they operate under high water pressure. Such leakage including damage to piping and the bull eventually result in human casualties and loss of expensive equipment as well as the loss of combat capabilities. In such cases, a decision-making system is necessary to respond immediately to the damage in order to maintain the safety or the survival of the submarine. So it is necessary to have an automatic system that can generate responses and give advice to the operator on bow to make decisions to maintain the survivability of the damaged vessel. In this paper a knowledge-based decision support system for submarine safety is developed. The domain knowledge is acquired from submarine design documents, design expertise, and interviews with operators. The knowledge consists of responses regarding damage of the pressure bull and piping systems. Expert elements are deduced to obtain the decision from the knowledge base, and the system makes recommendations on bow to cope with damage to the bull and piping and whether the submarine should stay in the sea or to surface. It is demonstrated that the developed system is well simulated to the real situation through sample applications.

Spatial information Infrastructure (SII) facilitates the sharing, interoperability and integration of geographical information among department components of a region or a country. The SII is developed and shared by different department components. The relation of department components is a fundament for collaborating tasks and information exchange in SII. There are two kinds of department components, one is the provider which produces geospatial data of SII, other is the consumer which uses geospatial data of SII. The consumer includes two kinds of user, one is the user which only uses and does not produce geospatial data in SII, other is the special user which not only uses but also produces geospatial data in SII. The provider includes different hierarchies corresponding to different kinds of geospatial data in SII. All providers in the hierarchies form provider actor set PA. All consumers also form consumer actor set CA. The sender recipient relation SR and SRI are defined on Cartesian product of PA and CA. Five tasks and information flow in SII demonstrate the geospatial data acquisition, information production, management, and application among department components. The tasks and their sub tasks are subdivided activities. Each activity corresponds to the relation SR or RSI. The activity along with the relation of provider and consumer forms a scheme of geographical information exchange between department components.

We argue that RoboCup can be used to improve the teaching of AI in undergraduate education. We give some examples of how AI courses using RoboCup can be implemented using a problem based approach at two different Universities. To reduce the negative aspects found we present a solution, with the aim of easing the burden of grasping the domain of RoboCup for the students, RoboSoc which is a general framework for developing simulated RoboCup agents. © 2001 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
