Electronic health records (EHRs) are usually highly dimensional, heterogeneous, and multimodal. Besides, the random recording of clinical variables results in high missing rates and uneven time intervals between adjacent records in the multivariate clinical time-series data extracted from EHRs. Current works using clinical time-series data for patient representation regard the patients' physiological status as a discrete process described by sporadically collected records. However, changes in the patient's physiological condition are continuous and dynamic processes. The perception of time and velocity of change is crucial for patient representation learning. In this study, we propose a time- and velocity-aware gated recurrent unit model (GRU-TV) for patient representation learning of clinical multivariate time-series data in a time-continuous manner. The neural ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and velocity perception mechanism are applied to perceive the time interval between adjacent records and changing rate of the patient's physiological status, respectively. Our experiments on two real clinical EHR datasets (PhysioNet2012, MIMIC-III) establish that GRU-TV is a robust model on computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tasks, especially on sequences with high-variance time intervals. The advent of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has facilitated the acquisition of high-resolution data regarding cell heterogeneity across various tissues. A fundamental and critical step in the analysis of scRNA-seq data is cell type identification. An appropriate graph construction strategy can reflect the topological structure between cells and allows for detailed exploration of the relationships between cells and genes. Given the sparsity of scRNA-seq data and the pronounced noise generated by shallow sequencing, choosing an appropriate graph construction strategy has become a significant challenge. In this paper, we propose a single-cell clustering method, named Sc-PNNMF, based on structural perturbation of nonnegative matrix factorization. Sc-PNNMF employs a structural perturbation algorithm to optimize the gene expression matrix. The optimized matrix guides the matrix factorization process, effectively overcoming the impact of data sparsity and significant noise in gene expression data on the graph construction strategy. We compared the clustering abilities of Sc-PNNMF with five other methods on ten real datasets.

As a popular evolutionary algorithm, artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm has been successfully applied into the threshold-based image segmentation problem. Based on our analysis, we find that the Otsu segmentation function is separable which means each variable is independent. Due to its one-dimensional search strategy and relative power global but poorer local search abilities, ABC could find an acceptable but not precise segmentation results. For making more precise search and further enhancing the achievements on image segmentation, we propose an Otsu segmentation method based on a new ABC algorithm with an improved scout bee strategy. Different from the traditional scout bee strategy, we use a local search strategy when a bee stagnates for a defined value. The experimental results on Berkeley segmentation database demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm. © 2020, Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH. All rights reserved.

Real-time eyeblink detection in the wild can widely serve for fatigue detection, face anti-spoofing, emotion analysis, etc. The existing research efforts generally focus on single-person cases towards trimmed video. However, multi-person scenario within untrimmed videos is also important for practical applications, which has not been well concerned yet. To address this, we shed light on this research field for the first time with essential contributions on dataset, theory, and practices. In particular, a large-scale dataset termed MPEblink that involves 686 untrimmed videos with 8748 eyeblink events is proposed under multi-person conditions. The samples are captured from uncon-strainedfilms to reveal “in the wild“ characteristics. Meanwhile, a real-time multi-person eyeblink detection method is also proposed. Being different from the existing counter-parts, our proposition runs in a one-stage spatio-temporal way with end-to-end learning capacity. Specifically, it simultaneously addresses the sub-tasks of face detection, face tracking, and human instance-level eyeblink detection. This paradigm holds 2 main advantages: (1) eyeblink features can be facilitated via the face's global context (e.g., head pose and illumination condition) with joint optimization and interaction, and (2) addressing these sub-tasks in parallel instead of sequential manner can save time remarkably to meet the real-time running requirement. Experiments on MPEblink verify the essential challenges of real-time multi-person eyeblink detection in the wild for untrimmed video. Our method also outperforms existing approaches by large margins and with a high inference speed.

Sensor arrays generating differential received signal strength (DRSS) measurements have found many applications in robotics. However, accurate calibration of these sensor arrays remains a challenge. Most existing methods are impractical in that they assume to know signal source positions or certain parameters (i.e., path loss exponent), and try to estimate the others. In this paper, we adopt graph simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) as a general framework for jointly estimating the source positions and parameters of the DRSS sensor array. Our contributions are twofold. On the one hand, by using a Fisher information matrix approach, we conduct a systematic observability analysis of the corresponding SLAM setup for the calibration problem. On the other hand, we propose an effective procedure to select the initial value which is fed to Levenberg-Marquardt iterations for further improving optimization accuracy and convergence. Extensive simulation and hardware experiments show that the proposed method renders high-quality calibration results. The high-speed train inspection robot needs to perform alignment parking and image acquisition at the position of the train bogie, and reliable alignment identification marks are the basis for the inspection robot to achieve highprecision alignment parking. The existing alignment method is mainly based on the way of artificial beacons, in the inspection workshop through manual laying of additional identification marks such as QR codes, magnetic stripes, RFID electronic tags, auxiliary robot alignment parking, but this type of method in beacon maintenance, laying costs and other aspects have certain limitations. Aiming at the problem, this paper proposes a vision-based bogie beacon detection method, which combines the target detection technology with the unique bogie spatial structure feature of the train, and provides reliable identification marks for the alignment and parking of the inspection robot. This method improves the alignment accuracy, reduces the cost of laying and maintaining artificial beacons, and has high application value.

The traditional kinematic calibration method for manipulators requires precise three-dimensional measuring instruments to measure the end pose, which is not only expensive due to the high cost of the measuring instruments but also not applicable to all manipulators. Another calibration method uses a camera, but the system error caused by the camera’s parameters affects the calibration accuracy of the kinematics of the robot arm. In order to solve this problem, this paper reduces the dimensionality of the experimental data and redesigns the objective function to be optimized. That is, the three-dimensional positions of the feature points of the calibration plate under each manipulator attitude corresponding to the actual kinematic model and the classic D-H kinematic model are mapped into the pixel coordinate system, and the sum of Euclidean distance errors of the pixel coordinates of the two is used as the objective function to be optimized. And then, nonlinear optimization and parameter compensation are performed. The experimental results show that the pixel deviation of the end pose corresponding to the optimized D-H kinematic model proposed in this paper and the end pose corresponding to the actual kinematic model in the pixel coordinate system is 0.99 pixels. Compared with the 7.9 deviation pixels between the pixel coordinates calculated by the classic D-H kinematic model and the actual pixel coordinates, the deviation is reduced by nearly 7 pixels for an 87% reduction in error. Therefore, the proposed method can effectively avoid system errors caused by camera parameters in visual calibration, can improve the absolute positioning accuracy of the end of the robotic arm, and has good economy and universality.

In order to solve the problem of under-segmentation in traditional superpixel methods, a new image segmentation framework is proposed, which is based on gradient ascent including Simple Linear Iterative Clustering (SLIC) superpixels and watershed algorithm. First, SLIC method is adopted to generate uniform superpixels, which are then determined whether under-segmentation occurs by a homogeneity criterion. In heterogeneous regions, an adaptive watershed algorithm processes a more precise division based on luminance histogram. Experimental results show that the bi-level framework has good performance on detail-rich regions, without significantly increasing the time complexity compared with conventional SLIC. © 2019, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) establishes a direct communication pathway between the human brain and a computer. It has been widely used in medical diagnosis, rehabilitation, education, entertainment, etc. Most research so far focuses on making BCIs more accurate and reliable, but much less attention has been paid to their privacy. Developing a commercial BCI system usually requires close collaborations among multiple organizations, e.g., hospitals, universities, and/or companies. Input data in BCIs, e.g., electroencephalogram (EEG), contain rich privacy information, and the developed machine learning model is usually proprietary. Data and model transmission among different parties may incur significant privacy threats, and hence privacy protection in BCIs must be considered. Unfortunately, there does not exist any contemporary and comprehensive review on privacy-preserving BCIs. This paper fills this gap, by describing potential privacy threats and protection strategies in BCIs. It also points out several challenges and future research directions in developing privacy-preserving BCIs. © 2024, CC BY.
