Understanding and modeling the function of the neurons and neural systems are primary goal of systems neuroscience. Sparse coding theory demonstrates that the neurons in primary visual cortex form a sparse representation of natural scenes in the viewpoint of statistics. In this paper, we propose a novel sparse coding model based on structural similarity (SS_SC) for natural image feature extraction. The advantage for our model is to be able to preserve structural information from a scene, which human visual perception is highly adapted for. Using the proposed sparse coding model, the validity of image feature extraction is testified. Furthermore, compared with standard sparse coding (SC) model, the experimental results show that the quality of reconstructed images obtained by our method outperforms the SC method.

Many theoretical and experimental results have appeared recently on the stability of T-S fuzzy systems and the convergence of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. In this paper, we present a T-S fuzzy stochastic PSO model in which the PSO algorithm is viewed as a time-invariant linear plant with a time-varying feedback controller that is embedded in the T-S fuzzy state system. The randomly weighted sum of the cognition component and social component is used as the state feedback controller in the local linear state system, and the PSO algorithm is theoretically improved from one that performs single stochastic optimization to one that performs fuzzy stochastic optimization. Conditions for asymptotic stability of the new model are given using the T-S fuzzy stability theory.

In our real world, there usually exist several different objects in one image, which brings intractable challenges to the traditional pattern recognition methods to classify the images. In this paper, we introduce a Conditional Random Fields (CRFs) model to deal with the Multi-label Image Classification problem. Considering the correlations of the objects, a second-order CRFs is constructed to capture the semantic associations between labels. Different initial feature weights are set to introduce the voting techniques for a better performance. We evaluate our methods on MSRC dataset and demonstrate high precision, recall and F 1 measure, showing that our method is competitive.

This paper tries to fill the gap between Traditional Chinese Pulse Diagnosis (TCPD) and Doppler diagnosis by applying digital signal analysis and pattern classification techniques to wrist radial arterial Doppler blood flow signals. Doppler blood flows signals (DBFS) of patients with cholecystitis, gastritis and healthy people are classified by L2-soft margin SVM and 5 linear classifiers using the proposed feature - piecewise axially integrated bispectra (PAIB). A 5-fold cross validation is used for performance evaluation. The classification accuracies between either two groups of subjects are greater than 93%. Gastritis can be recognized with higher accuracy than cholecystitis. Cholecystitis can be recognized with higher accuracy on left hand data than right. The findings in this paper partly conform to the theory of TCPD. Though the sample size is relatively small, we could still argue that the methods proposed here are effective and could serve as an assistive tool for TCPD.

In this paper we review the major approaches to nonrigid object reconstruction based on multi-view images. It tries to reflect the profile of this area by focusing more on those subjects that have been given more importance in the literature. In this context most of the paper is devoted to present all kinds of approaches for non-rigid object reconstruction based on multiview images. A number of references are provided that describe applications of non-rigid object reconstruction based on multiview images The paper ends by addressing some important issues and open questions that can be subject of future research.

BSS method using exterior penalty function optimization

Blind Source Separation(BSS) algorithm for hybrid sources separation based on exterior penalty function optimization method is proposed. The proposed algorithm is under the framework of constrained BSS(cBSS) method which solves the constrained optimization problem by using the exterior penalty function method. In order to choose nonlinear functions as the probability density function(PDF) estimation of the source signals, the parameterized asymmetric generalized Gaussian density(AGGD) estimation is proposed which can separate the hybrid mixtures of source signals using only a flexible model. Moreover, AGGD based BSS method is completely blind to the source signals. Simulations confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Copyright © 2010 Binary information Press May, 2010.

In this paper, a new technique based on Gabor filters with adaptive window is proposed for SAR image segmentation in overcomplete brushlet domain. SAR image is full of texture and direction information, and brushlet is a new kind of analysis tool for image with rich directional information. Aim at these characteristics, this paper combines Gabor filters with GLCP for segmentation in brushlet coefficients domain. In SAR image processing, the difficulty is the balance between regions and boundaries. The adaptive window technique is adapted in this paper to obtain the optimal size of Gabor filters. The presented method was found to be superior to three other methods by the experimental results for SAR image. ©2009 IEEE.

Double-pulse or multi-pulse detectors have better performance than single pulse detectors in inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) system. The more echoes we use, the better performance we have if the optimum detectors are utilized. The conventional inter-period correlation processing (IPCP) utilizes the received echoes directly. In this paper, a novel triple stage double-pulse detector is derived. We propose the first stage (nonlinear shrinkage map) to realized noise removal, and the second stage to estimate range migration number. Finally, we utilize the modified IPCP receiver to improve accuracy without the increase of the compute load compared with the conventional IPCP system. The proposed receiver is compared with other conventional detectors based on measured aircraft radar data and achieves satisfied performance. ©2009 IEEE.

Bandelet transform is an efficient image sparse representation approach which can adaptively approximate the geometrical regularity of image structures. In this paper, a multi-bandelets based method for SAR image compression is presented, which is constructed by combining multi-wavelet with Bandelet transform and geometric flow optimization. Compared with single wavelet, multi-wavelet has some advantages such as compact support, orthogonality, symmetry and smoothness, thus making finite length filtering, linear phase, correlation remove and good frequency domain characteristics possible, which are very desirable in image compression. Moreover, in our method the multi sub-bands collaborative decision algorithm for geometric flow optimization is proposed to obtain more accurate geometric flows. A number of simulations are taken on SAR images and the result shows that our method can provide a significant improvement over the multi-wavelet and the second generation Bandelet, both in visual fidelity and some objective evaluation criteria such as peak signal to noise ratio, equivalent numbers of looks and edge preservation index. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

SAR image retrieval, lacking of well performance recently due to the particularity of SAR image, has drawn more and more attention with the increasing volume of SAR data and the dramatically enlarging application range of SAR image. This paper considers both the characteristic of content-based image retrieval (CBIR) and SAR image, proposing a novel SAR image retrieval method. The proposed method can be divided into two parts: image classification and matching. Firstly we use Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to gain a precise result of classification, and then we get the retrieval results through the integrated region matching (IRM) algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed method can retrieve SAR images which contain all kinds of surface features effectively. ©2009 IEEE.
