A method for measuring focal length based on Talbot effect is put forward, which suits determining focal length of long-focus lens. The variation of Moiré fringes occurs after typical phase object of measuring lens is laid between two gratings. The images of fringes taken by CCD camera are processed with MATLAB. The focal length of measuring lens is figured out accurately after calculating the slope of fringes, the separation angle between two grating lines and measuring the distance between lens and the second grating. Experimental data indicate that, for a system with laser wavelength of 0.65m, measuring lens wth focal length of 420mm, the measurement accuracy is 0.10%.So this method has advantages of simple device, fast processing speed and high precision. It satisfies focal length determination of long focal-length lens used in SG-III Facility. © 2009 SPIE.

Based on analyzing the structure characteristics of a multivariable grey model, a novel design method of grey prediction PID control is proposed according to the control requirements of a discrete system. Combining the grey system theory with digital PID control, a grey model GM (0, N) of the discrete system is constructed and in the initial stage the control effect is directly determined by a digital PID controller. Meanwhile, the parameters of the GM (0, N) model are estimated via generating operation. Then the compensation controller is employed to eliminate the influence of uncertain parts on system performance by utilizing the prediction control variable due to parameter estimation. Finally, a simulation experiment for the control system is taken on Matlab. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and the practicability of this control method for a discrete system.

Ground water level measurements are very important for a wide range of applications in geosciences, agriculture, environment monitoring and mining industry. Currently, reliable and automatic ground water level measurements have not been realized. This paper presents the simulation and design of a segmented resistance sensor for measuring ground water level. Based on this sensor design, we have developed an instrument that can automatically log the ground water level. Finite element simulations were performed to optimize the sensor design and to gain insight into its response. Experimental results in the lab and field have verified the usefulness of the sensor.

Based on the directional characteristic of SAD (Sum of Absolute Difference) distribution and the center-biased characteristic of motion vectors, a fast BMA(block-matching motion estimation algorithm), DHS (Diamond and Hexagon Search), is proposed in this paper. DHS employs HP to locate the best matching block with large motion vector, and diamond search pattern (DP) to refine the motion vector. Although the proposed DHS may also be trapped in local minima, the experimental results show that it is faster than UMHexagonS (Unsymmetrical-cross multi-hexagon-grid Search), while its encoding efficiency is better than DS and it is almost the same as that of UMHexagonS.

To achieve efficient traffic control, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) has been widely deployed in many regions such as America, Europe, Australia, Japan, and Taiwan. To prevent the unnecessary losses, ITS adopts the inter-vehicle communications to inform the drivers if there are accidents nearby. However, the ability of effective transmission distance of the emergency information depends notably on the percentage of the vehicles equipped with communication device and the characteristics of radio wave propagation. The vehicles which are not equipped with these communication devices will block the radio propagation and result in the undesirable shadowing attenuation. This paper surveys the impact of the shadowing effect for the inter-vehicle communications via the computer simulations and the field measurements. Besides, a modified three-ray shadowing model suitable for the inter-vehicle communication is proposed. With the proposed model, the influence of the showing effect on the effective transmission distance will be evaluated.

Radar signal sorting is picking-up pulse serial of same radar emitter from dense complex pulse signal flow. The tolerance of radar signal sorting is analyzed in modern electronic warfare. The complex and dense pulses environment makes it become a vital factor to restrict the efficiency of sorting of the conventional multi-parameters signal sorting system. A segment clustering radar signal sorting method is presented based on support vector clustering (SVC) according to the idea of statistics learning theory. It prevents tolerance from affecting radar sorting. The accuracy of sorting and the sensitivity of algorithm on parameter variation is analyzed. The experimental results show that the sorting method presented is effective to overcome the tolerance of radar signal sorting.

Nonlinear predictive control based on online support vector machine

It is difficult to build an accurate model using the traditional predictive control algorithm for a nonlinear system. Because of the nonlinearity, time variation, the control quality is not ideal. A nonlinear predictive control algorithm based on online support vector machines model was proposed. The nonlinear model of the nonlinear system was obtained by online support vector machine to train a sequence data of input and output, and we can improve the system model accuracy online. The simulation results illustrate that the nonlinear predictive control using online SVM is effective. © 2009 Binary Information Press August, 2009.

A method for detecting spikes and slow burst in photic evoked electroencephalogram (EEG) was proposed. The spikes were detected by combining methods of the morphological filter and the similarity coefficient in the time domain. The slow burst was detected by using pole of AR model in the frequency domain. The proposed method was applied for the photic evoked EEG data containing spikes and slow burst, and brought satisfactory coincidence with the results interpreted by a qualified electroencephalographer. © 2009 SICE.

In recent years, because of the birthrate declining and the elderly peoplepsilas population growing, the lack of doctors and the increase of the medical cost is becoming a big problem. One of solution for this problem is to prevent the humans from diseases in order to reduce the medical cost (e.g. by using the hospital as few times as possible). In this research, we have developed a wearable vital sensor which can be used anywhere without disrupting the everyday life of the patient. Furthermore, we have implemented a ubiquitous health monitoring system, which can confirm and share the sensor information received from a cellular phone attached to the wearable vital sensor immediately through the browser. This system can also send emergency report based on sensor information to the family and the doctor. In addition, we verified the system effectiveness by evaluating the implemented system.
