This paper proposes a circuit configuration for the realization of a four-terminal floating nullor (FTFN) with electronically tunable current gain. It mainly consists of an op amp in input together with two complementary current mirrors with controlled gain and two standard improved Wilson (1990) current mirrors. The validity of the performance of the scheme is verified through PSPICE simulation results. Some example applications in the design of the proposed tunable FTFN as a tunable active element show that the circuit properties can he varied by electronic means are also included.

This paper is concerned with the argument that the identification of Takagi Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy models from training data should involve an important feature between data fitness and model complexity. One hand a (T-S) fuzzy model with a large number of fuzzy rules may encounter the risk of having an approximation capable of fitting training data well. On the other hand it may be difficult to run this fuzzy model structure due to heavy computational cost. In order to facilitate the development of a balance between these requirements, a Higher Order Singular Value Decomposition (HOSVD) based T-S fuzzy model reduction is introduced using the well-known Yam SVD fuzzy rule-based approximation technique.

This paper presents a novel watermarking technique for digital audio signals. A visually recognizable binary image served as a watermark is embedded into an audio signal in discrete cosine transform domain. In order to enhance robustness and make good use of masking characteristics of the audio signal, the techniques of pseudo-random permutation and energy-based permutation are used during watermarking. The experimental results show that the proposed watermarking technique is robust to several signal manipulations, such as filtering, compression, and so on.

An industrial boiler process has complicated characteristics, such as time-varying property, large delay, nonlinearity and multiple-variables coupling. For its control, a multiple control algorithm of fuzzy-PID control strategy with Smith compensator and an intelligent weight function is presented in this paper. Simulation and running results show that this algorithm has good performance, small overshoot and can reduce the static error effectively.

In wireless multimedia services, the system can provide a user with multiple data rates. This paper focuses on the combined control of rates and powers for the system, in which a finite number of transmission rates are available. This problem was first addressed by Kim, Rosberg and Zander (see Proc. IEEE VTC Fall, p.1653-57 1999) and two distributed power control algorithms were suggested. One of the suggested algorithms there is called selective power control (SPC). In this paper, we extend SPC by combining it with the active link protection (ALP) scheme. The main purpose of such an extension is trying to guarantee the minimum rate to users and to minimize the number of rate changes by smoothing the realized CIRs. Computational experiments are carried out on a DS-CDMA system. The results indicate that the modified SPC achieves smaller outages and less rate changes while giving the same or slightly higher system throughput, compared with SPC.

The increasing use of PC-based solutions in control systems allows the introduction of Intranet technologies to fieldbuses, especially for management purposes. The paper shows concepts and strategies for a universal management solution for fieldbus systems based on Intranet. An exemplary solution covering P-NET and CAN systems within a single environment is described. It provides data access as well as management functions for different fieldbuses using a browser as an unique, easy to handle user interface. Different strategies for a mapping of the bus systems' management functions to web-based solutions are described. Problems, benefits and further trends are discussed from the users' and vendors' points of view. © 1999 EUCA.

Signal separation of background EEG and spike by using morphological filter

A signal separation method for extracting background electroencephalogram (EEG) from EEG containing spikes was proposed. Morphological filters were designed for extracting spike waveforms, and then the background EEG was obtained by subtracting the detected spike waveforms from the EEG with spike . The proposed method was evaluated by using simulated EEG data, which consisted of a summation of EEG without spike and model waveform of typical spike. The background EEG separated by the method was processed by the automatic background EEG interpretation.

The retina is an intelligent vision sensor indispensable in real-time image information processing of animals. The parallel image processing function of the retina was realized in an analog CMOS integrated circuit (vision chip). The chip was implemented with a one-dimensional Laplacian-Gaussian receptive field the size of which can be controlled by external signals. Active pixel sensors were used in the sensor part of the chip where the light sensitivity can be controlled by varying the accumulation time. Circuits compensating for noise due to the mismatch of transistor characteristics were incorporated, and the experimental results verified that sufficiently accurate outputs can be obtained under natural illumination. The chip can effectively extract the spatial frequency bandwidth of the signal in the presence of noise. © 1999 Scripta Technica.

Characteristic impedance of offset coupled pairs of strip lines by the principle of superposition for interconnect capacitance of image conductors

In this paper, the characteristic impedance calculation method based on an approximate computation formula for the capacitance between the strip conductors presented by the authors, the electric image method, and the method of superposition of conductor systems is extended. A simple calculation method is proposed in which the characteristic impedance of an offset strip line and of offset coupled strip lines with no rigorous solution can be computed much more easily than by the conventional numerical methods. Since this method uses no elements for the model, the computational labor is very small. Therefore, the method is considered extremely effective for optimized circuit design of strip lines and offset coupled strip lines. Also, since the calculation procedure is very simple, it is very fast and accurate calculation for a wide range of parameters is possible. For strip lines and coupled strip lines, infinitely many image conductors appear in principle, and their potential coefficients can be expressed in terms of the sum of an infinite series of Dirichlet type in the mutual capacitances of the strip conductors. The numerical results of characteristic impedance calculations by this method agree well with the approximation for microstrip lines by Schneider and Wheeler and for symmetric strip lines by Hilberg, as well as with the approximations for symmetric coupled microstrip lines, and offset strip lines by the finite element method.
