In this paper the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) of a current steering digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is related to the process parameters used for its implementation. It is shown that the realization of such DACs in advanced processes provides power and area reduction combined with faster signaling. However, it is very challenging to improve the SFDR at a certain given output swing and sampling frequency. It is demonstrated that the SFDR can be doubled by using an optimized cascode switch. It is also concluded that compared to MOSFET based approaches higher sampling frequencies can be achieved by bipolar transistor based DACs if the SFDR and transition frequency are fixed. The reason is the higher Early voltage of bipolar transistors.

Precise localization of an object with attached RFID tag is required for many future applications like the internet of things, augmented reality or distributed sensor networks. Especially precise medium range localization in dense multipath environments places high demands on the capabilities of RFID tags, which are severely limited concerning complexity and power consumption. Regarding range coverage, active backscatter transponders significantly reduce path loss in comparison to their passive counterparts. This is particularly important at high frequencies, which are attractive since their regulatory constraints offer larger allocated bandwidths compared to lower frequency bands. Therefore, with mm-wave transponders, ranging resolution, data throughput for RFID communication and multi user capability can be improved without accepting range limiting RF power restrictions like in ultra-wideband systems. In order to achieve a measurement range in the order of 10 m with a tag featuring limited complexity and power consumption, the switched injection-locked oscillator is proposed as backscatter transponder technology, which has already been successfully applied to lower frequency localization systems [2]. In contrast to a simple linear amplifier based approach, it offers much higher single stage gain in the order of about 60 dB when switched on. Furthermore, aliases caused by the switched operation allow suppressing passive reflections of the RFID reader's signal completely. In this paper, a complete 34 GHz FMCW RFID ranging system concept and demonstrator implementation based on the switched injection-locked oscillator are demonstrated for the first time. The theoretical expectations regarding the operation principle are verified experimentally and the performance of the demonstrator implementation is evaluated. Measurement results in an indoor multipath indoor environment deliver an accuracy of about 3 cm within a range of 1 to 6 m.

A 17-tap 3.5 Gbps finite impulse response (FIR) pulse shaping filter for 60 GHz transmitters with quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation is presented. Measurement results show that an attenuation of 19 dB at 2.2 GHz is achieved with cutoff frequency of 1.76 GHz, which enable the 60 GHz transmitter to comply with the stringent spectrum mask requirement. No digital-to-analog converters (DACs) are needed in the proposed approach performed in the analog baseband. The dc power of 3.3 V x 300 mA (55 mA without buffers) is competitive compared to conventional DACs not providing filtering functionality. Implemented in a 0.25 μm SiGe HBT technology, the fully integrated circuit consumes an area of 1.6mm2. ©2010 IEEE.

UHF RFID reader transceiver for Chinese local standard (840845 MHz and 920925 MHz), in concord with the protocols of EPC Class-1 Gen-2 and ISO/IEC 180006C, is presented. A highly linear RF front-end with low flicker noise, an on-chip self-jammer cancellation (SC) circuit with fast time-varying cut-off frequency and a DC-offset cancellation (DCOC) circuit are proposed to deal with the large self-jammer in the receiver. In the presence of 22 dBm PA output power, the receiver achieves a sensitivity of -79 dBm including the 15 dB loss of the directional coupler. A CMOS class-AB PA is integrated in the transmitter, with 22 dBm output power and 35% PAE. The spectrum mask achieves ACPR 1 of -45 dBc and ACPR2 of -60 dBc. A sigma-delta fractional-N PLL with a single LC VCO is also implemented for good phase noise (-126 dBc/Hz @ 1 MHz offset) and high frequency resolution within 1 kHz. This single-chip is fabricated in a 0.18 μm standard CMOS process. It occupies a silicon area of 13.5 mm2 and dissipates 203 mW from a 1.8 V supply voltage when transmitting 7.5 dBm output power. © 2010 IEEE.

Traveling wave amplifiers (TWAs) offer the advantage of broadband amplification and a closed set of equations that allow deriving the RF gain by means of treating TWAs as discrete transmission line approximations. Up to now, however, the significant losses associated with CMOS integrated inductors have been neglected. This work presents a new approach for determining the transmission line losses and phase constants that will bring about an enhanced gain prediction accuracy. The theory is verified by means of a realized design example. The working principle of the integrated DC supply inductor is discussed, whose performance is based on the inductors self-resonance effect. When applying a supply voltage Vdd of 2.4V, the measured compression point P1dB and the power added efficiency PAE at 2.4GHz amount to 16.9dBm and 19.6%, respectively. At 5.5GHz, a value of 16.6dBm for P1dB and an associated PAE of 13.9% are achieved. The peak RF gain for these output power values reaches 11dB, and values greater than 8dB are obtained up to 7GHz. © 2009 Cambridge University Press and the European Microwave Association.

Using radial basis function networks for function approximation tasks suffers from unavailable knowledge about an adequate network size. In this work, a measuring technique is proposed which can control the model complexity and is based on the correlation coefficient between two basis functions. Simulation results show good performance and, therefore, this technique can be integrated in the RBF training procedure.

The analysis of linear analog amplifiers at the beginning of the design process shows in some cases an unwanted resonance in the amplitude response or an unwanted overshooting in the time domain.. It is important for the designer to know design methods for compensating this effect. An approach of the symbolic analysis, that supports the representation of a signal-flow graph with feedback for an amplifier circuit, will be introduced. The method is based on the node analysis and mathematical handling of symbolic expressions. Using the proposed approach the feedback, the open-loop gain and the loop gain can be analyzed and calculated. With the analysis of pole-zero of the symbolic loop gain, parameters of the amplifier can be determined for the compensation of the amplitude response. © 2002 IEEE.
