The energy consumption of electric circuits depends on the applied voltage level. This is used by dynamic voltage scaling approaches where the voltage is lowered up to a datasheet specified level. To reduce the energy consumption even further, it would be possible to power the electric circuits below the specified voltage levels. Considering Wireless Sensor Nodes, this `undervolting' would save a substantial amount of energy and, hence, would lead to a significant longer lifetime of nodes and networks. Contrariwise, operating processors or nodes outside their specifications adds some extra incertitude to the system. In this paper, we analyze the effects of undervolting for a typical wireless sensor node in theory and practice. A prototype implementation is used to characterize the influence of lower-than-recommended voltage levels on the MCU. In addition, the impact of different temperatures is considered as well as the behaviour of an undervolted transceiver unit and, therefore, the effects on the wireless communication. While classical computer applications may contain too many hazards to outweigh the improved energy consumption when using undervolting, we show that it is particularly suitable for Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs) with a huge potential of saving energy and the opportunity of novel power management approaches on every layer.

Many scenarios require confidential communication and protection against active attackers. The way to establish trust between devices and authenticate these networks depends completely on the scenario. In Body Area networks human biometrics can serve as a shared secret among devices. In real-time voice communication, the ZRTP protocol allows for interactive trust establishment by recognizing the peer's voice. In asynchronous networks, such as email, other interactive mechanisms have been deployed, such as key fingerprint verification. In our research, we are analyzing the security and usability of existing trust mechanisms for heterogeneous networks. Furthermore, we are proposing protocol changes and new mechanisms to establish trust between devices. In this paper an overview is given over existing and upcoming research in this area. For synchronous networks, human biometrics, such as human gait or a peer's voice, are used as trust anchors. For asynchronous networks, the usability of interactive public-key verification mechanism are analyzed as trust anchors.

In long-term sensing applications data patterns can vary significantly over time. Often a multitude of sensors are used to measure different types of environmental conditions. Considering such variations it is hard to select a predefined sample rate that guarantees both, high data quality and energy efficiency. Hence, this paper presents a dynamic sample rate adaptation that strikes a balance offering optimal energy efficiency while maintaining high data quality. Based on the general concept of Bollinger Bands, a metric is derived that solely depends on the trend of the measured data itself. A real world measurement in the area of smart farming is used to show the effectiveness of this approach.

Energy is the most limiting factor for remote outdoor deployments of Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs). This paper proposes a novel routing algorithm for dual-platform nodes targeting WSN applications as found in smart farming applications. For scenarios in which high power components of nodes and radio links will be switched on at known points in time, our algorithm tries to make use of scheduled uptimes of nodes with the possibilities to turn other nodes on to send the nodes' data to a sink on time. We compare our method with a traditional flooding-based algorithm as well as with a greedy version which tries to transfer the data immediately. We show that our mechanism works energy-efficient while meeting all deadlines and keeping the amount of control traffic at a necessary minimum.

The Routing Protocol for Low power and Lossy networks (RPL) is a wide-spread, flexible routing protocol specifically designed for energy-constrained networks such as Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs). The resilience of RPL has been verified in several existing evaluations, but how a simple node reset can impact the energy efficiency has not been investigated so far. Thus, in this paper we examine the energy costs of transient node failures in a RPL network. We show that such temporary node failures can have a significant impact on the network's total energy usage. As transient node failures are common in WSNs this work reveals an important weakness of RPL which can even be exploited for attacks.

Time synchronization of several nodes is important for many Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) algorithms, components, and application scenarios. Therefore, it would be very beneficial if a low-cost method for such synchronization was available. The same applies to low-power wakeup of nodes. Ideally, a simplistic and almost no-cost channel should be provided that can be utilized to face such challenges like synchronization and wakeup of nodes. In this demo paper we present the idea for such a method and show first results as well as a proof of concept setup. It is based on an electric pulse generated by, e.g., a regular electric fence which can be detected and utilized by usual ultra low-power micro controller units (MCUs) of a sensor node.

Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs) that are deployed outdoors suffer from rough environmental conditions. Moreover, cheap hardware or energy management techniques like undervolting might lead to inaccurate sensing results and, thus, unreliable data. Hence we propose a characteristic model of every sensor node's data to derive the `normal' behavior of sensors statistically. Beside massively reducing the total amount of sensed data, this representative model can be used to detect discordant values and redundancies between nodes. Theoretical considerations as well as a functionality test of a server implementation with real WSN nodes show the features of this approach.

Ballistocardiography (BCG) describes the measurement and analysis of ballistic forces that are evoked by the heart's movement and propagated to the surface of the body. Although there are several research groups focusing on BCG, the understanding on general BCG signals is still limited, as existing studies only consider a small number of subjects and insufficient measurement *** paper presents first results of our ongoing study to collect BCG ground-truth data. We present a custom hardware implementation for both, high data quality and simultaneous ECG reference measurement. In a large-scale study we currently collected more than 10 hours of BCG data from 34 subjects including BCG in resting position as well as under physical stress. In addition, related biometric data are collected to enable comprehensive investigations. We plan to provide access to the data for interested researchers. © 2019 Creative Commons.

Recently there is a number of scenarios such as vehicle platooning, UAV swarms and cooperative robots, where a group of autonomous entities needs to make joint decisions to operate effectively. Distributed agreement protocols can play a key role to establish a common view on context parameters and to coordinate joint actions. Due to the harsh environmental conditions in some of these scenarios and their safety critical nature such protocols need to tolerate arbitrary faults and even malicious attacks. This paper presents a framework for Byzantine fault tolerant agreement for small-sized groups of autonomous, wirelessly connected systems. It focuses, besides providing support for general purpose value agreement, on the agreement of distributed sensor readings. The latter enables to establish a joint view on context conditions, thereby building the basis for joint coordinated actions. As classical Byzantine fault tolerant agreement protocols require 3t + 1 participants to tolerate t faulty nodes, we also consider a hybrid fault model by utilizing a trusted subsystem, which can only be subject to crashes. The latter reduces the required group size for agreement to 2t + 1 nodes and reduces the message complexity of the protocol, which is essential for the targeted scenarios. The experiment results show that the trusted subsystem can effectively increase the efficiency.

In industry 4.0 many industrial processes are enhanced by using the information continuously collected through connected sensors. While many use cases have been discussed and simulated, the transfer into real-world deployments and the discussion of associated challenges have been rather *** this field report, we present our experiences on developing and deploying a versatile Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) for the monitoring of temperature, particle concentration, CO 2 concentration and other important environmental data. The WSN is accompanied by its backend and testbed infrastructure, which allows the continuous management and monitoring of the deployments. We describe the challenges faced and experiences gained during the deployment of 70 nodes at five different industrial scenarios and recap the lessons we learned.
