Recently, ontology engineering has become ever more important when it comes to conceptualize knowledge. However, writing software applications that operate on ontological knowledge still suffers from a lack of connectivity provided by available ontology management systems. Interfaces of ontology management systems are either based on error prone programming language agnostic remoting protocols or they are restricted to one particular programming language. We implemented an ontological Knowledge Base Server, which can expose the functionality of arbitrary off-the-shelf ontology management systems via arbitrary remoting protocols. Based on XML Schema Definition, we defined a full-fledged API for processing OWL ontologies. Client access code can be generated automatically for virtually any object oriented programming language. Using Description Logics terminology, the Knowledge Base Server API was formally specified, such that it could be used to validate implementations based on three different adapted ontology management systems.

The wide availability of mobile devices equipped with wireless communication devices paves the way for building highly dynamic communities of ad-hoc networks. For an asynchronous service discovery in this environment, we suggest the use of mobile agents. Here, we concentrate on file sharing and exchanging services. We adopt a new asynchronous approach for discovering and locating these files, since the availability of files in this particular domain will change significantly over time when nodes constantly join and leave the network. In this paper, we present a typical application scenario, highlight the main components of the system architecture and discuss the technical challenges facing us while trying to port main infrastructural features of traditional database management systems to our mobile light-weight software agents. © 2003 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). Current research activities in the computer science area focus on integration of systems with diverse purposes and architecture. They include the usage of mobile devices just like any immobile computer and the efficient, combined presentation and utilisation of contents from multiple providers together on the web. Even though these two tasks are naturally tackled in different ways, in this paper we propose a single solution to both problems based on logic, which, furthermore, makes their seamless integration possible. That is, without scrapping the well known models that have proven good, we offer a scalable architecture that supports wireless access to the most valuable pieces of the Internet keeping parts of the existing infrastructure and with no duplication of functionality. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

Multi-agent systems (MAS) offer new perspectives compared to conventional, centrally organised architectures in the scope of production planning and control. They are expected to be more flexible and robust while dealing with a turbulent production environment and disturbances. In this paper, a MAS is developed and compared to an Operations Research Job-Shop algorithm using a simulation-based benchmarking scenario. Environmental constraints for a successful application of MAS are identified and classified. Furthermore, the topic of MAS robustness is addressed by applying database technologies on the basis of transactions.

The success of the Internet as a medium for the supply and commerce of various kinds of goods and services leads to a fast growing number of autonomous and heterogeneous providers that offer and sell goods and services electronically. The new market structures have already entered all kinds of markets. Approaches for market infrastructures usually try to cope with the heterogeneity of the providers by special wrapper components, which translate between the native protocols of the providers and the protocol of the market infrastructure. Enforcing a special interface to the provider limits their independence. Moreover, requirements such as a direct access to the internal business logic and databases of the providers or fix templates for internal data structures are not suitable to establish a real open electronic market. A solution is the limitation of the access to the existing Web interface of the provider. This solution keeps the independence of the providers without burdening them additional work. However, for efficiency reasons, it keeps necessary to tailor a wrapper for each provider. What comes more, each change in the provider or its Web representation forces the modification of the existing wrapper or even the development of a new wrapper. In this paper, we present an approach for a wrapper for complex Web interfaces, which can easily be adapted to any provider just by adding a source description file. A tool allows the construction and modification of source descriptions without expert knowledge. Common changes in the Web representation can be detected and comprehended automatically. The presented approach has been applied to the market of scientific literature.

Only imperfect data is available in many decision situations, which therefore plays a key role in the decision theory of economic science. It is also of key interest in computer science, among others when integrating autonomous information systems: the information in one system is often imperfect from the view of another system. The case study for the present work combines the two issues: the goal of the information integration is to provide decision support for consumers, the public. By the integration of an electronic timetable for public transport with a geographically referenced database, for example, with rental apartments, it is possible to choose alternatives, for example, rental apartments from the database that have a good transport connection to a given location. However, if the geographic references in the database are not sufficiently detailed, the quality of the public transport connections can only be characterized imprecisely. This work focuses on two issues: the representation of imprecise data and the sort operation for imprecise data. The proposed representation combines intervals and imprecise probabilities. When the imprecise data is only used for decision making with the Bernoulli-principle, a more compact representation is possible without restricting the expressive power. The key operation for decision making, the sorting of imprecise data, is discussed in detail. The new sort operation is based on so called π-cuts, and is particularly suitable for consumer decision support. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Applying meta search systems is a suitable method for supporting the user if there are many different retrieval services available on the Web. Due to information splitting strategies of literature services existing meta search systems either provide minimal integration of results or slow response times. We present an approach that combines techniques of personalization and query processing in order to satisfy the user's demand for both fast and comprehensive results. In order to evaluate and compare different query processing strategies and additional influencing parameters we developed a simulation tool called SIMPSON. Thereby, we can observe the performance of query processing within the context of different response times of the underlying digital library services in the Web, with different kinds of user queries, and with different sizes of query results. To evaluate and compare the performance of different query processing and duplicate detection strategies we developed metrics, particularly with regard to user satisfaction. We present results from our first experiments with SIMPSON, focusing on duplicate detection, query specification, and Web server performance of the underlying digital library services. © 2002 IEEE.

The selection of products and services is a central issue in electronic commerce. Available data is often not sufficient to allow a precise evaluation and user preferences are usually vague. In this paper, a model for deciding under imperfect information is presented. The decision model handles two types of imperfections: imprecisions on the side of the alternatives and vagueness in the preferences of the users. Incomplete description of the alternatives may result in imprecisions in the evaluation of their features. The decision model provides a framework to reduce these imprecisions by completing information from external sources. Besides, fuzzy query conditions allow users to express vague preferences. A scenario illustrates the use of the decision model where the goal is to select a rental apartment from classified advertisements with respect to its availability by public transport.

A multi-attribute decision model aiming at the selection of an efficient set of alternatives is presented. The major challenge is that the alternatives are not perfectly known, i.e., the associated values may be imprecise. Furthermore, for improved user friendliness, vague query conditions are allowed. Imprecise scores are described by probability distributions, vague query conditions by fuzzy predicates. The philosophy of the presented approach is to create an environment similar to the multidimensional spreadsheet front-end of data warehouses, in which the user can interactively discover the imperfect answers. In particular, numeric measures that allow an aggregated view of alternatives are defined. A geographic information retrieval scenario demonstrates the use of the decision model.

During the last decade object-oriented programming has grown from marginal influence into widespread acceptance. During the same period, progress in hardware and networking has changed the computing environment from sequential to parallel. Multi-processor workstations and clusters are now quite common. Unnumbered proposals have been made to combine both developments. Always the prime objective has been to provide the advantages of object-oriented software design at the increased power of parallel machines. However, combining both concepts has proven to be notoriously difficult. Depending on the approach, often key characteristics of either the object-oriented paradigm or key performance factors of parallelism are sacrificed, resulting in unsatisfactory languages. This survey first recapitulates well-known characteristics of both the object-oriented paradigm and parallel programming, and then marks out the design space of possible combinations by identifying various interdependencies of key concepts. The design space is then filled with data points: for 111 proposed languages we provide brief characteristics and feature tables. Feature tables, the comprehensive bibliography, and web-addresses might help in identifying open questions and preventing re-inventions. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
