We present an adaptation of input/output conformance (ioco) testing principles to families of similar implementation variants as appearing in product line engineering. Our proposed product line testing theory relies on Modal Interface Automata (MIA) as behavioral specification formalism. MIA enrich I/O-labeled transition systems with may/must modalities to distinguish mandatory from optional behavior, thus providing a semantic notion of intrinsic behavioral variability. In particular, MIA constitute a restricted, yet fully expressive subclass of I/O-labeled modal transition systems, guaranteeing desirable refinement and compositionality properties. The resulting modal-ioco relation defined on MIA is preserved under MIA refinement, which serves as variant derivation mechanism in our product line testing theory. As a result, modal-ioco is proven correct in the sense that it coincides with traditional ioco to hold for every derivable implementation variant. The development of web services and especially semantic web services is a tremendous task for people who are not familiar with all language constructs. Especially with the growing mass of several semantic web service approaches a language-independent service development is needed. This gap can be filled by using model-driven software development. Therefore, in this paper we introduce a meta-model for semantic web services and show the benefits of automatic code generation on the basis of a small example.

State changes over time are inherent characteristics of stateful applications. So far, there are almost no attempts to make the past application history programmatically accessible or even modifiable. This is primarily due to the complexity of temporal changes and a difficult alignment with prevalent programming primitives and persistence strategies. Retroactive computing enables powerful capabilities though, including computations and predictions of alternate application timelines, post-hoc bug fixes, or retroactive state explorations. We propose an event-driven programming model that is oriented towards serverless computing and applies retroaction to the event sourcing paradigm. Our model is deliberately restrictive, but therefore keeps the complexity of retroactive operations in check. We introduce retro-, a runtime platform that implements the model and provides retroactive capabilites to its applications. While retro- only shows negligible performance overheads compared to similar solutions for running regular applications, it enables its users to execute retroactive computations on the application histories as part of its programming model. © 2018 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Domain feature models concisely express commonality and variability among variants of a software product line. For supporting separation of concerns, e.g., due to legal restrictions, technical considerations and business requirements, multi-view approaches restrict the configuration choices on feature models for different stakeholders. However, recent approaches lack a formalization for precise, yet flexible specifications of views that ensure every derivable configuration perspective to obey feature model semantics. Here, we introduce a novel approach for preconfiguring feature models to create multi-perspectives. Such customized perspectives result from composition of various concern-relevant views. A structured view model is used to organize features in view groups, wherein a feature may be contained in multiple views. We provide formalizations for view composition and guaranteed consistency of perspectives w.r.t. feature model semantics. Thereupon, an efficient algorithm to verify consistency for entire multi-perspectives is provided. We present an implementation and evaluate our concepts by means of various experiments. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

A number of popular engineering processes and methodologies emerged over the past years which attracted interest in research and industry. For process enactment, enterprises have to match requirements of engineering processes with existing resources. Therefore, it has to be analyzed if employees have sufficient skills or if infrastructure has sufficient capabilities to match the requirements of a situational process. Both, maintaining a skill and resource database and matching requirements against this database are an enormously challenging and time-consuming task. Additionally, this matching has to be carried out regularly as employees join and leave the company and skills change over time. Based upon a formal, logical base, we present an approach that combines ontological and metamodeling technical spaces and enables an automatic analysis of engineering processes regarding the existence of necessary resources.

Modeling the architecture and behavior of embedded systems has long been a success story in the engineering of embedded systems due to the positive effects on quality and productivity, e.g., by declarative specifications, by enabling formal analyses, and by the generation of optimized code. These benefits, however, can only be reaped with extensive investments in specialized languages and tools which typically come with a closed and highly restrictive ecosystem. In this paper, we report our experiences while building an internal domain-specific language for IoT systems. We present our modeling language realized in Type-Script and integrated into the TypeScript/JavaScript ecosystem. The modeling language supports the declarative specification and execution of components, connectors, and state machines. We also provide a simple state space exploration to enable quality assurance techniques like test case generation and model checking. The language is illustrated by a running example with IoT devices. We believe that our solution lies at a sweet spot of providing a declarative modeling experience while reaping benefits from modern programming languages and their ecosystem to boost productivity. © 2020 CEUR-WS. Model-driven software development facilitates faster and more flexible integration of information and communication systems. It divides system descriptions into models of different view points and abstraction levels. To effectively realize cross-organisational collaborations, it is an important prerequisite to exchange models between different modelling languages and tools. Knowledge is captured in model transformations, which are continuously adjusted to new modelling formats and tools. However, interoperability problems in modelling can hardly be overcome by solutions that essentially operate at syntactical level. This paper presents a novel approach using the capabilities of semantic technologies in order to improve cross-organisational modelling by automatic generation and evolution of model transformations. © 2008 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

We study the relation between process calculi that differ in their either synchronous or asynchronous interaction mechanism. Concretely, we are interested in the conditions under which synchronous interaction can be implemented using just asynchronous interactions in the p-calculus. We assume a number of minimal conditions referring to the work of Gorla: a "good" encoding must be compositional and preserve and reflect computations, deadlocks, divergence, and success. Under these conditions, we show that it is not possible to encode synchronous interactions without introducing additional causal dependencies in the translation. © K. Peters, J.-W. Schicke & U. Given a synchronous system, we study the question whether the behaviour of that system can be exhibited by a (non-trivially) distributed and hence asynchronous implementation. In this paper we show, by counterexample, that synchronous systems cannot in general be implemented in an asynchronous fashion without either introducing an infinite implementation or changing the causal structure of the system behaviour. © J.-W. Software product lines have potential to allow for mass customization of products. Unfortunately, the resulting, vast amount of possible product variants with commonalities and differences leads to new challenges in software testing. Ideally, every product variant should be tested, especially in safety-critical systems. However, due to the exponentially increasing number of product variants, testing every product variant is not feasible. Thus, new concepts and techniques are required to provide efficient SPL testing strategies exploiting the commonalities of software artifacts between product variants to reduce redundancy in testing. In this paper, we present an efficient integration testing approach for SPLs based on delta modeling. We focus on test case prioritization. As a result, only the most important test cases for every product variant are tested, reducing the number of executed test cases significantly, as testing can stop at any given point because of resource constraints while ensuring that the most important test cases have been covered. We present the general concept and our evaluation results. The results show a measurable reduction of executed test cases compared to single-software testing approaches. © 2015 ACM.
