With the increasing amount of interconnections between vehicles, the attack surface of internal vehicle networks is rising steeply. Although these networks are shielded against external attacks, they often do not have any internal security to protect against malicious components or adversaries who can breach the network perimeter. To secure the in-vehicle network, all communicating components must be authenticated, and only authorized components should be allowed to send and receive messages. This is achieved through the use of an authentication framework. Cryptography is widely used to authenticate communicating parties and provide secure communication channels (e.g. Internet communication). However, the real-time performance requirements of in-vehicle networks restrict the types of cryptographic algorithms and protocols that may be used. In particular, asymmetric cryptography is computationally infeasible during vehicle operation. In this work, we address the challenges of designing authentication protocols for automotive systems. We present Lightweight Authentication for Secure Automotive Networks (LASAN), a full life-cycle authentication approach. We describe the core LASAN protocols and show how they protect the internal vehicle network while complying with the real-time constraints and low computational resources of this domain. By leveraging on the fixed structure of automotive networks, we minimize bandwidth and computation requirements. Unlike previous work, we also explain how this framework can be integrated into all aspects of the automotive product life cycle, including manufacturing, vehicle maintenance and software updates. We evaluate LASAN in two different ways: Firstly, we analyze the security properties of the protocols using established protocol verification techniques based on formal methods. In this paper we consider the case of a network of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) connected through a Flex Ray bus in the automotive domain. Multiple distributed applications can run on this underlying architecture, each partitioned into tasks that are mapped on different ECUs. These applications can often be executed in different functional modes with different requirements on the communication resources in terms of data size and sampling period. Moreover, new applications can be deployed on to the ECUs at run-time. To efficiently utilize the communication resources and accommodate new applications, a certain flexibility in reallocation of the resource is necessary. However, the Flex Ray bus requires static configuration of schedules and data mapping in order to guarantee a more deterministic system behavior, allowing little room for flexibility. In order to address this problem, we propose a reconfigurable communication middleware that lies between the application layer and the communication controller layer, which maps messages onto Flex Ray schedules, and can be reconfigured at runtime. The configuration is synthesized and deployed online, allowing a certain reallocation of communication resources to applications. In this paper, we describe the design of such a reconfigurable communication middleware and demonstrate its function with an implementation using industry-strength Flex Ray design tools.

In this paper we present a novel approach to generate precise 3D ground-truth data considering the refraction of the fish tank. We used an accurate and easy-to-handle calibration method to calibrate two orthogonally aligned high-resolution cameras in real-time. For precise fish shape segmentation we combined two different background subtraction algorithms, which can also be trained while fish are swimming inside the aquarium. The presented approach takes also shadow segmentation removal and mirroring into account. For refraction compensation at the air-water border we developed an algorithm which calculates the ray-deflection of every shape-pixel and compute the 3D-model in real-time.

In order to obtain resource efficient implementations of control loops on embedded platforms, recently there has been a renewed interest in studying stability and various other quality-of-control (QoC) metrics in the presence of control message drops. Towards this, different methods have been proposed to quantify the impact of message drops on stability and control performance. In this paper we will survey these techniques and clarify the relationship between them. Given a drop pattern that satisfies stability and specified QoC constraints, it is important to check whether an implementation platform satisfies this pattern. In other words, whether the control loop in question may be implemented on this platform. Given an architecture, we will also show how certain notions of expressing drop patterns are easier to verify compared to others. © 2013 IEEE.

real-time task scheduling becomes even more challenging with the emerging of island-based multi-core architecture, where the local memory module of an island offers shorter access time than the global memory module does. With such a popular architecture design in mind, this paper exploits real-time task scheduling over island-based homogeneous cores with local and global memory pools. Joint considerations of real-time scheduling and memory allocation are presented to efficiently use the computing and memory resources. A polynomial-time algorithm with an asymptotic 4-approximation bound is proposed to minimize the number of needed islands to successfully schedule tasks. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, 82 benchmarks from the MRTC, MediaBench, UTDSP, NetBench, and DSPstone benchmark suites were profiled by a worst-case-execution-time analyzer aiT and included in the experiments.
