Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) capable Mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (MUAV) are an economic alternative to real helicopters if local aerial pictures or other aerial measurements are needed. With electronic stabilization, GPS based position-hold and autonomous way-point functions these systems are easy to operate. While autonomous take off and flying are done routinely, this is not true for autonomous landing. GPS based position stabilization, in conjunction with the normally used cheap and small IMUs, is not accurate enough to avoid dangerous moves in the very last moment of the landing operation. While sufficient for an emergency landing this is not suitable as routine operation. In this paper a solution is presented which uses optical flow techniques for position stabilization in the moment just before the touch down to avoid the inaccuracies from the GPS at this critical moment. © 7th German Conference on Robotics, ROBOTIK 2012

For Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to become more widely used in power systems and the future smart grids, ANN based algorithms must be capable of scaling up as they try to identify and control larger and larger parts of a power system. This paper goes through the process of scaling up an ANN based identifier as it is driven to identify increasingly larger portions of a power system. Distributed and centralized approaches for scaling up are taken and the pros and cons of each are presented. The New England/New York 68-bus power network is used as the test bed for the studies. It is shown that while a fully-connected (centralized) ANNs is capable of identification of the system with appropriate accuracy, the increase in the training times required to obtain an acceptable set of weights becomes prohibitive as the system size is increased. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper summarizes past and ongoing research in the area of the application of computational intelligence (CI) for control of wind turbine generators (WTGs). Several intelligent design approaches and control strategies, including optimal design of WTG controllers using particle swarm optimization (PSO) and mean-variance optimization (MVO) algorithms and adaptive critic design-based coordinated optimal adaptive control for wind plants and shunt FACTS devices, are presented for dynamic performance and fault ride-through enhancement of WTGs and the associated power grid. The effectiveness of these intelligent design approaches and control strategies are demonstrated by nonreal- and real-time simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC and RSCAD/RTDS, respectively.

A high frequency transformer is a critical component in a dual active bridge converter (DAB) used in a power electronics-based solid state transformer. Operation of a DAB converter requires its transformer to have a specific amount of winding leakage inductance. The demand for high efficiency requires minimization of transformer copper loss and core loss. Furthermore, available window area limits the winding arrangement of transformer. A hybrid of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and differential evolution (DE) is proposed to solve this multi-objective problem with constraints. DE provides diversity to pbest of each particle, which is missing in standard PSO. The differential evolution particle swarm optimization (DEPSO) algorithm is applied to find optimal transformer designs for DAB converters. Results show the DEPSO method is a generic effective way to find optimal high frequency transformer design. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper describes an absolute localisation method for an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) if GPS is unavailable for the vehicle. The basic idea is to combine an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to the ground vehicle and use it as an external sensor platform to achieve an absolute localisation of the robotic team. Beside the discussion of the rather naive method directly using the GPS position of the aerial robot to deduce the ground robot's position the main focus of this paper lies on the indirect usage of the telemetry data of the aerial robot combined with live video images of an onboard camera to realise a registration of local video images with apriori registered orthophotos. This yields to a precise driftless absolute localisation of the unmanned ground vehicle. Experiments with our robotic team (AMOR and PSYCHE) successfully verify this approach.

Echo State Network (ESN) is a new type of Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) proposed in recent years. The training process of ESN is easier and requires less computational effort than regular RNN which has the same size. Due to its high modeling capability of complex dynamic system, ESN has been used in various power system applications such as power system nonlinear load modeling and true harmonic current detection, wide area monitoring, intelligent control of an Active Power Filter (APF), overhead conductor thermal dynamics identification, wind speed or water inflow forecasting, etc. This paper introduces the basic concept and the offline and online training algorithms of the ESN in detail and reviews the state of the art of ESN applications in power systems. © 2009 IEEE.
