This article gives a capsule view of research on rough set theory and applications ongoing at universities and laboratories in China. Included in this capsule view of rough set research is a brief description of the following things: Chinese research groups on rough set with their URLs for web pages, names of principal researchers (supervisors), numbers of graduate students, and topics being investigated. Statistical summaries showing the growth in the research on rough set theory and application in China are included. In addition, an introduction summarizing the research interests of Chinese researchers is included in this article. The contribution of this article is a complete overview of the principal research directions in rough set theory and its applications in China. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

We model the sum and product riddle in public announcement logic, which is interpreted on an epistemic Kripke model. The model is symbolically represented as a finite state program with n agents. A model checking method to the riddle is developed by using the BDD-based symbolic model checking algorithm for logic of knowledge we developed in [7]. The method is implemented by extending the model checker MCTK [7] and then the solution of the riddle is verified successfully.

Recently, robotic automation in clinical laboratory becomes of keen interest as a fusion of bio and robotic technology. In this paper, we present a new robotic platform for clinical tests suitable for small or medium sized laboratories using mobile robots. The mobile robot called Mobile Agent is designed as transfer system of blood samples, reagents, microplates, and other instruments. Also, the mobile agent can perform diverse tests simultaneously based on its cooperative and distributed ability. The driving circuits for the mobile agent are embedded in the robot, and each mobile agent communicates with other agents by using Bluetooth communication. The RFID system is used to recognize patient information. The BioRobot platform based on mobile agents can control throughput according to the amount of tests. Also, the operation and maintenance of the system can be improved because its components are easily replaceable. To evaluate feasibility for BioRobot platform, the system was manufactured and validated by preliminary experiments.

Recently in the world, there are a lot of reports concerning the relation between the EEG and the preference in the analysis of the biosignal. In this paper, personal preference using olfactory stimulus and the EEG are taken out. We measure the EEG when smelling favorite odor and dislikeable odor. Then, the feature data of the EEG are extracted by the proposed method. Furthermore, in order to show the effectiveness, we demonstrate simulation examples. From the simulation result, it was confirmed that the proposed method works well. © 2007 SICE.

A humanoid robot generally has more than thirty DOFs to be controlled in real-time and needs to deal with information of multiple sensors such as encoders, force, gyro, acceleration and vision sensors. Therefore an effective control system is crucial for the humanoid robot. In this paper, we propose a distributed control architecture for humanoid robots based on the combination of Memolink and CAN bus. This architecture consists of a vision and hearing processing sub-system for vision information processing, a tele-operation sub-system and a realtime motion control sub-system. The operating systems of this architecture are composed of Windows and RT-Linux. The Windows OS is used as the operating system of the former two subsystems to process multimedia and tele-operation information tractably. Linux and real-time RT-Linux OS are used as the operating system of motion control sub-system to achieve the realtime control capability. The biped walk experiments show that this control architecture is effective, reliable and tractable.

An improved mixed evolutionary algorithm is proposed, which is based on evolutionary trend, EDAs (Estimation of Distribution Algorithms) and clustering analysis. Firstly, the population is classified by clustering algorithm, then for each class, partial individuals of next generation are generated by EDAs, and the rest are supplemented by combination of extrema among classes, which can overcome the premature effectively. When the individuals in some classes converge to a small field, an exhaustive local search replaces EDAs. Simulation shows the algorithm can not only improve the global searching greatly, but also overcome premature effectively.

Based on the organizers' recent textbook "Solving Control Related Mathematic Problems in Matlab" by Tsinghua University Press in 2007, a half day tutorial is designed to have a quick tour of the book with illustrated examples. The emphasis is on control related topics. We choose to cover 1) "Difference equation related problems" (Chapter 6); 2) "intelligent computation related problems" (Chapter 7); 3) "Robust control related problems" (Chapter 8); and 4) "Fractional calculus related problems" (Chapter 9). In each part, control related examples will be illustrated. The main objective of this tutorial is to show how to actually apply Matlab tools to get the control related problems solved. Hands-on experience is emphasized.

The research on machine translation has been lasting for many years, and now this research field is increasingly a thoroughly refined. In practical machine translation system, the processing of a simple and short Chinese sentence has somewhat good results. However, but the complex long Chinese sentence translation still has difficulties. In this paper a new hierarchical approach processing for Chinese complex long sentence through analysis of Chinese punctuation, conjunctive words and syntax function is proposed. The method synthetically uses semantic characteristic of source Chinese sentence, which includes grammatical features, the length of the source sentence, punctuation and functional words. First phase is conjunctive words for simplified segmentation, and then the syntax analysis, in order to process complex long sentence by the multi-hierarchical approach. A long sentence is divided into several parts; every part gets the correct translation of the result separately, and then is combined by the comprehensive approach to gain the complex long sentence translation result. Experiments show that our approach can significantly reduce the time consumption and numbers of ambiguity, and also improve the accuracy and readability when parsing Chinese complex long sentence.
