Two improvements are introduced into vicinal-risk-minimization based support vector (SV) algorithm. Since the misclassified samples must be support vectors, a scheme for pruning hard-to-learn samples from the training set based on support vectors is presented. The parameter's determination of Gaussian vicinal function is proposed to be modified, based on the maximum likelihood criterion. Preliminary experimental results show that the pruning scheme and improvement of the parameter's determination of vicinal function much improved vicinal SV algorithm's generality, and can outperform support vector machine (SVM) by about 0.5% in test accuracy.

Due to the complexity and non-regularity of tree shapes, traditional digital photogrammetry using stereo matching method is difficult to obtain the accurate tree height, This fact therefore limits the application of the aerial digital photogrammetry technology in the power line survey. This paper presents a method of tree height extraction from large viewing aerial image using the knowledge of segmented tree crown. This method is based on a rough digital surface model (DSM) of tree crowns and the exterior orientation of the image. The basic steps of this method is that the DSM is first used to find the region of interest in the image based on the exterior orientation, and then the edges of the distinct trees or branches are extracted using image segmentation technology. An algorithm that uses both the rough DSM height information and exterior orientation data to calculate the accurate heights of the segmented trees or branches is presented. The algorithm assumes that most of the trees are upright, and the projection in the large viewing angle images of the crown and branches can therefore be used to calculate their heights relative to the averaged DSM height. Hence, the accurate height of the trees around the rough DSM can be refined. Some experimental results are given with the image captured from multi-angular imaging system mounted on a helicopter in which a Position and Orientation system (POS) is onboard to record the exterior element of the cameras. The experimental results demonstrated that this algorithm can largely improve the accuracy of tree height extraction. The application in power line monitoring system is promising.

In this paper, the CPG-based control method for the rotating manipulation that can adaptively change the issuing cycle of motion-triggers is proposed. The CPG model consists of the mutual inhibition network and the rotating manipulation is performed by the motion-triggers that are issued from the CPG model. The smooth change of the desired velocity can be given by the output of neurons that keep smooth increase and decrease. Experimental results using 4-fingered hand system suggest that the issuing cycle of the motion-triggers can be adaptively changed by the feedback of joint angle according to an object size.

In order to use data information in the Internet, it is necessary to extract data from web pages. An HTT tree model representing HTML pages is presented. Based on the HTT model, a wrapper generation algorithm AGW is proposed. The AGW algorithm utilizes comparing and correcting technique to generate the wrapper with the native characteristic of the HTT tree structure. The AGW algorithm can not only generate the wrapper automatically, but also rebuild the data schema easily and reduce the complexity of the computing.

Presents a situation-driven reconfigurable architecture for a schema-based robot controller which is operating in partially known indoor environments. Instead of the purely repulsive forces from the obstacles, we employ the linear combination of the repulsive and the detouring forces around the obstacle, so that the obstacles generate virtual forces pushing the robot toward the goal rather than just blocking it. By reconfiguring the detouring direction and the activation level of each schema based on the geometric and/or topological information provided by the variable resolution maps, the robot can navigate through the environments in very natural way. Simulation results show that our approach can remarkably improve the intrinsic defects of traditional potential field-bused schemas.

Evolvable hardware is able to offer considerably higher performance than general-purpose processors and significantly more flexibility than ASICs. In order to take the advantages of general-purpose processors and ASICs, dividing a complex process into subprocesses is essential. In this paper, we propose a evolutionary method called context switching that splits a task into a set of subtasks whose complexity is manageable on the given hardware. The method is based on genetic programming. Due to its expressive power generic program can represent flexible strategies for decomposing complex tasks. The effectiveness of context switching is demonstrated on the design of adaptive controllers for a team of autonomous mobile robots.

We have developed a new parallel processor system specific for the MC analysis, to dramatically reduce the calculation time. Our parallel processor system is based on ring bus architecture. The RISC micro processor chip, which contains a ring bus interface unit (RBIU), a floating point arithmetic unit (FAU) and so on, was also developed for our system. Speed up ratio compared with a single processor reached to 13.5 at 23 PEs.
