We report about the manufacturing of sensor devices for detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air. The sensor comprises three fully inkjet-printed layers of (i) silver interdigitated electrodes (SIDE), (ii) multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and (iii) poly (styrene-co-maleic acid) partial isobutyl/methyl mixed ester (PSE). We have found that inkjet printing of MWCNT layers and a PSE layer on top yields an interfacial layer leading to the formation of a MWCNTs/PSE composite-like structure. The printed layers act as chemiresistive vapor sensors due to the change of electrical resistance in presence of selected VOCs. The sensor responses to various VOCs were studied by varying the concentration of the chemicals in the air between 50 and 500 ppm. The sensing mechanism can be understood as a fractional volume change of the inkjet-printed polymer that occurs during exposure to VOCs, resulting in a structural alteration of the MWCNT-polymer network. We have found that the sensor response can be defined as a function of the VOC's concentration. To investigate the morphologies of the inkjet-printed thin films, profilometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed.

This article considers the force control of an active probe for Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Firstly, the structure of this active probe is described. For designing the force controller, the model of this active probe was identified. Based on the measured frequency response, two notch filters were used to remove the resonant peak in open-loop frequency response. Then, a PI controller was designed to regulate the force of the probe. This controller was then implemented in a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). Experimental results were given to compare the actual performance of this controller with the conventional PI controller. It is shown that the controller with notch filters reduces the control error considerably and enables faster scan speed at weaker tip-sample interaction forces. © 2011 IFAC.

The production and deformation of perforated sheets introduces high levels of mechanical stress into the material. In a significant fraction, such stress levels lead to crack formation in the processed sheets. Additionally, the material might be thinned and weakened in the exposed areas;these areas tend to crack at any later dates. Currently no measuring device for the detection of such material cracks or narrowing in perforated sheet metals is in practical use. Such device should be able to test the deformed circumference of the processed sheets within the very limited time of the production cycles. This paper describes the physical principles and a metrological implementation of a potential method for fast crack detection in perforated sheet metals. Even a critical material thinning prior to the formation of a crack can be observed. The measuring task appears to be solvable on the basis of high frequency electromagnetic fields. © 2011 IEEE.

The growth in the capacity of electric power system creates a necessity demand on protection relaying systems. Optical current transducers (OCT) which are mainly single mode optical fiber subjected to Faraday rotation are used as replacement for EM transducers for their immunity to the EM interference. However, the sensitivity to currents depends on the Verdet constant which is low in optical fiber but the optical path length can be increased to compensate for it by winding the fiber around a current carrying element a large number of turns. In this work, we would like to study the effect of the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field induced by the current in the sensitivity of the optical fiber sensor. © 2011 IEEE.

We present a simple method to synthesize Pb（OH）2 nanorods by solution-phase reaction. Rod-like lead hydroxide precipitates are obtained by mixing lead nitrate with a concentration of about 0.01 M and potassium hydroxide with concentration of about O.03 M in an aqueous solution. Sodium chloride as an additive is premixed with the lead nitrate aqueous solution. The presence of chloride ions in the precursor solution results in the rod-like morphology of lead hydroxide precipitates. The growth mechanism of the lead hydroxide nanorods is discussed.

In metrology eddy current non-contact transducer have been widely used for measurement of position, displacement, cracks, vibration, proximity and alignment, as well as parts sorting applications over the past years. By reason of further developments of front end sensor elements as well as electronics, new application areas of eddy current sensors are technically feasible. In this paper lately achieved results in eddy current sensor developments will be presented. ©2010 IEEE.
