Motivated by the needs of precise carbon emission measurement and real-time surveillance for CO 2 management in cities, we present CitySee, a real-time CO 2 -monitoring system using sensor networks for an urban area (around 100 square kilometers). In order to conduct environment monitoring in a real-time and long-term manner, CitySee has to address the following challenges, including sensor deployment, data collection, data processing, and network management. In this discussion, we mainly focus on the sensor deployment problem so that necessary requirements like connectivity, coverage, data representability are satisfied. We also briefly go through the solutions for the remaining challenges. In CitySee, the sensor deployment problem can be abstracted as a relay node placement problem under hole-constraint. By carefully taking all constraints and real deployment situations into account, we propose efficient and effective approaches and prove that our scheme uses additional relay nodes at most twice of the minimum. We evaluate the performance of our approach through extensive simulations resembling realistic deployment. The results show that our approach outperforms previous strategies. We successfully apply this design into CitySee, a large-scale wireless sensor network consisting of 1096 relay nodes and 100 sensor nodes in Wuxi City, China.

The robustness of a schedule, with respect to its probability of successful execution, becomes an indispensable requirement in open and dynamic service-oriented environment, such as grids or clouds. We design a fine-grained risk assessment model customized for workflows to precisely compute the cost of failure of a schedule. In comparison with current course-grained model, ours takes the relation of task dependency into consideration and assigns higher impact factor to tasks at the end. Thereafter, we design the utility function with the model and apply a genetic algorithm to find the optimized schedule, thereby maximizing the robustness of the schedule while minimizing the possible risk of failure. Experiments and analysis show that the application of customized risk assessment model into scheduling can generally improve the successful probability of a schedule while reducing its exposure to the risk.

3D virtual reality, including the current generation of multi-user virtual worlds, has had a long history of use in education and training, and it experienced a surge of renewed interest with the advent of Second Life in 2003. What followed shortly after were several years marked by considerable hype around the use of virtual worlds for teaching, learning and research in higher education. For the moment, uptake of the technology seems to have plateaued, with academics either maintaining the status quo and continuing to use virtual worlds as they have previously done or choosing to opt out altogether. This paper presents a brief review of the use of virtual worlds in the Australian and New Zealand higher education sector in the past and reports on its use in the sector at the present time, based on input from members of the Australian and New Zealand Virtual Worlds Working Group. It then adopts a forward-looking perspective amid the current climate of uncertainty, musing on future directions and offering suggestions for potential new applications in light of recent technological developments and innovations in the area. © 2013 Sue Gregory.

How to exchange information between parties in a mega-scale disaster management system is one of the fundamental challenges to support timely and efficient disaster response and relief. Specifically, the timeliness, scalability, and availability are three desirable features for information exchange. We call the framework to support information exchange with the three features an Open information Gateway, OIGY in short. In this paper, we present the challenges of information gateway, and the design of the communication protocols and the fundamental components and distributed service recovery algorithms to support the aforementioned features. The algorithm aims at recovering the real-time publish and subscription services without the global information of network topology, available service brokers, and publish/subscription databases. A centralized algorithm is also presented for small scale networks.

Parents are often worried when their children have learning problems. Children with learning disabilities can have normal range intellectual quotient (IQ) but they may still have teachers and parents concerned about their capacity to assimilate new material and to develop skills. Often, these children may try very hard to follow instructions and to concentrate to reach good results. Yet, despite this effort, they fall behind. Therefore, it is very important to spread awareness in the society of the importance of the early intervention to help children with learning disabilities in their early stages in order to improve and enhance their learning capabilities. This can be done through adaptive, intelligent and informative ways. This paper contributes an intelligent web-based adaptive serious games system that helps children with learning disabilities at the kindergarten stage and through the early stages of primary education. The system targets children with normal IQ and relies on two valid tests; one for the IQ and one for diagnosis purposes. The latter is used to diagnose developmental disabilities for preschool age. This test serves as a basis for knowledge engineering for the developed rule-based inference engine.

It is a known fact today that VANETs [1] are going to play an increasingly important role in vehicular communication in the future. The impact of these networks especially to solve the problem of traffic optimization and control is significant. Traffic Optimization through information Dissemination (TOID) is an algorithm based on a mathematical model in which vehicles moving on the road can exchange information among themselves to report the average velocity and density of the roads within a certain region such that the driver has a fair idea of the traffic conditions in the region and which road to take depending upon his discretion. The algorithm ensures that the information reaches the network in a timely manner and the overheads are a minimum. The overheads are further reduced by optimizing the input parameters related to the average velocity and density in the network. The algorithm also reports the estimated density and estimated velocity in the network with a fair degree of accuracy. The effectiveness of the algorithm has been substantiated through extensive simulations using QualNet [2]. The algorithm is ideal for traffic problems in developing countries as it works for vehicular ad hoc networks that are completely infrastructure-less.

In this paper, we adopt the two quasi-sliding mode control for a class of multivariable discrete time bilinear systems. By applying the proposed control strategies, the system states would move into a boundary layer of the sliding surface and remain in the boundary layer in finite time. Thus, the stability of the overall system could be guaranteed. Finally, the computer simulation is applied to illustrate the control performance of the proposed control strategies.

Limited historical data and large fluctuations are two important issues for forecasting time series. In this paper, a hybrid forecasting model based on adaptive fuzzy time series and particle swarm optimization is proposed to address these issues. In the training phase, the heuristic rules automatically adapt the forecasted values based on trend values and the particle swarm optimization is applied to adjust the interval lengths in the universe of discourse for accuracy forecasting. The root mean square error, the absolute percent error and the mean absolute percent error are used to evaluate the forecasting performance. The data of tourism from Taiwan to the United States are used in the empirical study. The experimental results show that the proposed forecasting model outperforms other listed models in both the training and testing phases.

A large portion of energy-aware routing protocol for wireless sensor networks are cluster-based. In cluster based approaches, power of the cluster head (CH) nodes are drained more rapidly compared to other member nodes. Dynamic CH approach could partially alleviate this problem. But even with dynamic CH approach, energy is not uniformly dissipated among all nodes. In this paper, we propose a new energy-aware routing protocol where the communication protocol is such that, even when the clusters are fixed, power dissipation is same over all nodes (except CHs). Every node co-operates with each other to carry the payload to the CH so as the power dissipation is uniform. Therefore reconfiguration of cluster is not necessary, thereby saving a huge signalling cost and interruption in service. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol has longer node lifetime and better distribution of energy dissipation than the original LEACH protocol.
