Service composition is an important means for integrating the individual Web services to create new value added systems that can satisfy complex requirements. However, it is a challenge to analyze security requirements for those applications due to the uncertainty factors in distributive environment. This paper proposes an approach to modeling and analyzing security requirements of service composition. Petri nets are used to model the different components of service composition, the dynamic matching strategy of service composition is proposed. Aspect-orientation is used to weave the security requirements into service composition, which includes evaluation concern, authorization, security level outputting and access outputting. The operation semantics and related theories of Petri nets help prove its effectiveness and correctness. An example explains the modeling and analyzing process of service composition, and a series of experiments are done to explain that the use of aspects for analyzing security requirements of service composition is more efficient than conventional techniques. © 2011 IEEE.

Regression testing is a hot research area for Web service composition, which has direct impact on QoS of applications. This paper proposes an aspect-oriented regression test technique for analyzing functionalities of service composition. An extended version of Petri net is proposed as the underlying formalism. Services and components are modeled by Petri nets, service evolution is specified as crosscutting concerns, and in turn woven into the testing model of service composition by following weaving rules. A regression testing algorithm of service composition is designed. Theories of Petri nets help prove the effectiveness of the testing method. A case study shows that the approach simplifies the process of testing, and improves its efficiency as well.

As modern software systems operate in a highly dynamic context, they have to adapt their behaviour in response to changes in their operational environment or/and requirements. Triggering adaptation depends on detecting quality of service (QoS) violations by comparing observed QoS values to predefined thresholds. These threshold-based adaptation approaches result in late adaptations as they wait until violations have occurred. This may lead to undesired consequences such as late response to critical events. In this paper we introduce a statistical approach CREQA - Control Charts for the Runtime Evaluation of QoS Attributes. This approach estimates at runtime capability of a system, and then it monitors and provides early detection of any changes in QoS values allowing timely intervention in order to prevent undesired consequences. We validated our approach using a series of experiments and response time datasets from real world web services. © 2011 IEEE.

Monotone prediction problems, in which the target variable is non-decreasing given an increase of the explanatory variables, have became more popular nowadays in many problem settings which fulfill the so-called monotonicity constraint, namely, if an object is better in all attributes as another one then it should not be classified lower. Recent approaches to monotone prediction consider linear ordering on attribute domains, thus the meaning of being better in an attribute is limited to having a larger or a lower value in that attribute. However, this limitation restricts the use of recent approaches in cases where middle or marginal values of an attribute are better, what is natural in many real-world scenarios. We present a simple attribute value-transformation approach in this paper. The idea is to map attribute domains to real values where the mapped values express how the given value of an attribute contributes to higher classification of objects. Thus, we are searching for an data-specific approximation of a fuzzy membership function on the domain of each (numerical) attribute. Then, instead of the original attribute values we use their mapped values to mitigate the violation of monotonicity constraints in the data. Our approach is quite simple and is not limited to numerical attributes only. The described approach was tested and evaluated on benchmark datasets from the UCI machine learning repository. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, we describe how we integrated an artificial intelligence (AT) system into the PubMed search website using angmented browsing technology. Our system dynamically enriches the PubMed search results displayed in a user's browser with semantic annotation provided by several natural language processing (NLP) subsystems, including a sentence splitter, a part-of-speech tagger, a named entity recognizer, a section categorizer and a gene normalizer (GN). After our system is installed, the PubMed search results page is modified on the fly to categorize sections and provide additional information on gene and gene products identified by our NLP subsystems. In addition, GN involves three main steps: candidate ID matching, false positive filtering and disambiguation, which are highly dependent on each other. We propose a joint model using a Markov logic network (MLN) to model the dependencies found in GN. The experimental results show that our joint model outerforms a baseline system that executes the three steps separately. With the advent of modern techniques for scientific data collection, large quantities of data are getting accumulated at various databases. Systematic data analysis methods are necessary to extract useful information from rapidly growing data banks. Cluster analysis is one of the major data mining methods and the k-means clustering algorithm is widely used for many practical applications. But the original k-means algorithm is computationally expensive and the quality of the resulting clusters substantially relies on the choice of initial centroids. Several methods have been proposed in the literature for improving the performance of the k-means algorithm. This paper proposes an improvement on the classic k-means algorithm to produce more accurate clusters. The proposed algorithm comprises of a O(n logn) heuristic method, based on sorting and partitioning the input data, for finding the initial centroids in accordance with the data distribution. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm produces better clusters in less computation time. © 2011 IEEE.

Video streams are increasing by the development of network environments and price reduction of camera devices. Therefore needs of applications for querying video streams such as surveillance systems are on the increase. Meanwhile, relational stream processing systems have been researched for querying tuple streams. It is hard to deal with video streams by relational stream processing systems because video streams have time dependency which tuple streams do not have. In this paper, we propose a video manager for relational stream processing systems to integrate video streams and tuple streams. It can be used to query video streams using relational operators by relational stream processing systems and we can obtain resulting video data using RTSP. A video manager manages video data as MPEG-4 files so that they can be played easily by common media players. Finally we implemented a prototype system and evaluated its performance. © 2011 IEEE computer Society. All rights reserved.

Service composition is an effective way to build complex Web service applications. However, it is a challenge to handle failure recovery due to the uncertainty of service in distributed and heterogeneous environment. This paper proposes an approach to handling failure recovery in service composition. Petri nets are used to model the different components of service composition, failure recovery rules and service selection strategies are given. Based on these, aspect-orientation is used to weave failure recovery concern into service composition, which includes failure warning concern, service selection concern and recovery concern, the weaving mechanism dynamically integrates these schemas into a failure recovery model. The operation semantics and related theories of Petri nets help prove its effectiveness and correctness. A case study and experimental results demonstrate the approach can simplify the failure recovery process, and improve the design quality of service composition. © 2011 IEEE.

We present a new particle-based method for high viscosity fluid simulation. In the method, a new elastic stress term, which is derived from a modified form of the Hooke's law, is included in the traditional Navier-Stokes equation to simulate the movements of the high viscosity fluids. Benefiting from the Lagrangian nature of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method, large flow deformation can be well handled easily and naturally. In addition, in order to eliminate the particle deficiency problem near the boundary, ghost particles are employed to enforce the solid boundary condition. Compared with Finite Element Methods with complicated and time-consuming remeshing operations, our method is much more straightforward to implement. Moreover, our method doesn't need to store and compare to an initial rest state. The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective and efficient to handle the movements of highly viscous flows, and a large variety of different kinds of fluid behaviors can be well simulated by adjusting just one parameter. © 2011 IEEE.

We often receive unwanted information from a variety of electronic systems mainly through emails, electronic boards and messengers, called spam. Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately. Widely varying estimates of the cost associated with spam are available in the literature. However, a stochastic and quantitative analysis of the determinant characteristics of spam traffic is still an open problem. This work fills this gap. A 4-year data sample of real-time inbound traffic between May 2005 and July 2009 was collected to investigate and analyze characteristics of spam traffic through JIRANSOFT's Spam Sniper on the network at Korean Bible University. Our major findings of a statistical analysis of spam traffic are that (i) real-time inbound spam traffic is statistically more correlated (self-similar) when compared to normal traffic, and (ii) the degree of self-similarity measured in terms of the Hurst parameter H and obtained from different estimation techniques is very high. © 2011 IEEE.
