This paper studies the Partial Optimal Transport (POT) problem between two unbalanced measures with at most n supports and its applications in various AI tasks such as color transfer or domain adaptation. There is hence a need for fast approximations of POT with increasingly large problem sizes in arising applications. We first theoretically and experimentally investigate the infeasibility of the state-of-the-art Sinkhorn algorithm for POT, which consequently degrades its qualitative performance in real world applications like point-cloud registration. To this end, we propose a novel rounding algorithm for POT, and then provide a feasible Sinkhorn procedure with a revised computation complexity of Oe(n2/Ε4). Our rounding algorithm also permits the development of two first-order methods to approximate the POT problem. The first algorithm, Adaptive Primal-Dual Accelerated Gradient Descent (APDAGD), finds an Ε-approximate solution to the POT problem in Oe(n2.5/Ε). The second method, Dual Extrapolation, achieves the computation complexity of Oe(n2/Ε), thereby being the best in the literature. We further demonstrate the flexibility of POT compared to standard OT as well as the practicality of our algorithms on real applications where two marginal distributions are unbalanced. Sri Lankan students, especially those from rural and low-income backgrounds, face significant challenges in accessing higher education, including university applications, career planning, and financial aid. This research introduces an AI-powered platform designed to provide personalized assistance through university course recommendations, career guidance, financial aid information, and AI-generated mock aptitude tests. The platform employs Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) for course recommendations, Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) for career guidance, and a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) model for financial aid navigation. Additionally, AI-driven algorithms with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology support exam preparation. Data from students and universities informed model training, and evaluations showed high accuracy and user satisfaction across components. Results indicated that the platform effectively aligns educational resources with students' academic and career goals, promoting greater educational accessibility and support for underserved Sri Lankan students.

Brain networks typically exhibit characteristic synchronization patterns where several synchronized clusters coexist. On the other hand, neurological disorders are considered to be related to pathological synchronization such as excessive synchronization of large populations of neurons. Motivated by these phenomena, this paper presents two approaches to control the cluster synchronization of Kuramoto oscillators. One is based on the use of pacemakers to the clusters, and the other is based on feeding back the mean phases to the clusters. We first show conditions on the pacemaker weights and the feedback gains for the network to achieve cluster synchronization. Then, we propose a method to find optimal feedback gains through convex optimization. A numerical example demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed methods. © 2024 IEEE.

Automatic liver tumor detection from computed tomography (CT) makes clinical examinations more accurate. However, deep learning-based detection algorithms are characterized by high sensitivity and low precision, which hinders diagnosis given that false-positive tumors must first be identified and excluded. These false positives arise because detection models incorrectly identify partial volume artifacts as lesions, which in turn stems from the inability to learn the perihepatic structure from a global perspective. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel slice-fusion method in which mining the global structural relationship between the tissues in the target CT slices and fusing the features of adjacent slices according to the importance of the tissues. Furthermore, we design a new network based on our slice-fusion method and Mask R-CNN detection model, called Pinpoint-Net. We evaluated proposed model on the Liver Tumor Segmentation Challenge (LiTS) dataset and our liver metastases dataset. Experiments demonstrated that our slice-fusion method not only enhance tumor detection ability via reducing the number of false-positive tumors smaller than 10mm, but also improve segmentation performance. Without bells and whistles, a single Pinpoint-Net showed outstanding performance in liver tumor detection and segmentation on LiTS test dataset compared with other state-of-the-art models. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Enhancing Fairness and Performance: Scalable Hybrid Solutions for Class Imbalance in Big Data Analytics

Recent advancements in handling class imbalance include hybrid approaches that combine data-level and algorithmic-level techniques. However, challenges such as computational efficiency and adaptability to dynamic datasets remain to be prominently addredssed. This research paper introduces novel hybrid techniques that combine both data-level and algorithmic-level approaches to address class imbalance in large datasets. These techniques are designed to improve class distribution and processing efficiency while enhancing prediction accuracy, particularly for minority classes. The proposed model applies K-means SMOTE for over-sampling the minority class and centroid-based undersampling for the majority class, followed by Classification using XGBoost. Evaluations on multiple datasets demonstrate significant improvements in precision, recall, AUC-ROC, and F1-score compared to traditional methods. In addition to enhancing robustness and fairness, the approach effectively addresses challenges related to scalability, data diversity, and dynamic data sources in big data analytics. The hybrid technique achieved a 10-20% improvement in key performance metrics, including precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC-ROC, across various UCI datasets such as Diabetes, Hepatitis, and German Credit, confirming the model’s superiority in handling class imbalance and improving overall Classification performance.

Mobility is the biggest issue for blind individuals. In order to move around, they must rely on others. Therefore, we are creating a navigational aid for blind people, to help the blind people in the world from various difficulties they face in day-to-day life. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that a survey was conducted in 2014 and that there are an estimated 285 million visually impaired persons worldwide, of which 37 million are blind, with over 15 million of them being Indian. The majority of blind persons depend on other people for their activities since INDIA accounts for 21% of the global population of blind people (Khanam et al. in Int J Adv Res Sci Eng 7:195–199, 2018). Smart shoes play an important role. Obstacle detection is performed using ultrasonic sensor which is also done by many people in the previous projects or researches. The new concept that is included in this paper is that it can also detect any flame and potholes around the person using flame sensor and ultrasonic sensor, respectively. And we use shock sensor to detect any shock that occurs. If the smart assistive device or smart shoes senses an object, a pothole, a fire (from about three feet away), or a shock in front of the user, a buzzer will sound. Advancements in cyber-physical systems (CPSs) makes CPSs essential entities in society today, and have made them prominent across all fields. For example, the healthcare industry has evolved technologically and has effectively incorporated CPS into many application areas. While these advancements, involving medical CPSs (MCPS), have been revised according to Society 4.0, there are still issues that need to be considered while we transition from an information-based society (Society 4.0) to a human-centric society (Society 5.0). In this article, we propose an MCPS framework for Society 5.0 in the context of some state-of-the-art technologies. The proposed system focuses on enhancing security aspects of Society 5.0 through introduction of a security layer equipped with protocols, such as open authorization (OAuth), user-managed access (UMA), and self-sovereign identity (SSI). The added security layer is designed to incorporate country-specific security laws. Challenges and design issues in developing a trusted and secure service for MCPS are also discussed using vulnerability assessment and attack modeling. Finally, we discuss ethical aspects that need to be addressed in the transition from Society 4.0 to Society 5.0. © 2020 IEEE.
