Autonomous software requirement specifications and code generation are not only an ultimate goal of AI Programming (AIP), but also a persistent challenge to theories and technologies of software engineering. A cognitive system is demanded to autonomously elicit and rigorously refine software requirements in order to generate a set of formal specifications as the front-end of AIP. This paper presents a novel methodology for the design of an Intelligent Tool for Autonomous software Specifications (ITASS) based on latest advances in software science and intelligent mathematics. ITASS is implemented as an interactive system for capturing software requirements and generating mathematic-based specifications for code generation in the back-end of the AIP system. The ITASS methodology and experiments are demonstrated for solving real-world and complex software engineering problems enabled by the AIP theories underpinned by intelligent mathematics.

Purpose: software modelling and Model-Driven engineering (MDE) is traditionally studied from a technical perspective. However, one of the core motivations behind the use of software models is inherently human-centred. Models aim to enable practitioners to communicate about software designs, make software understandable, or make software easier to write through domain-specific modelling languages. Several recent studies challenge the idea that these aims can always be reached and indicate that human factors play a role in the success of MDE. However, there is an under-representation of research focusing on human factors in modelling. Methods: During a GI-Dagstuhl seminar, topics related to human factors in modelling were discussed by 26 expert participants from research and industry. Results: In breakout groups, five topics were covered in depth, namely modelling human aspects, factors of modeller experience, diversity and inclusion in MDE, collaboration and MDE, and teaching human-aware MDE. Conclusion: We summarise our insights gained during the discussions on the five topics. We formulate research goals, questions, and propositions that support directing future initiatives towards an MDE community that is aware of and supportive of human factors and values. © 2024, CC BY.

Many domains require scalable algorithms that help to determine diagnoses efficiently and often within predefined time limits. Anytime diagnosis is able to determine solutions in such a way and thus is especially useful in real-time scenarios such as production scheduling, robot control, and communication networks management where diagnosis and corresponding reconfiguration capabilities play a major role. Anytime diagnosis in many cases comes along with a trade-off between diagnosis quality and the efficiency of diagnostic reasoning. In this paper we introduce and analyze FLEXDIAG which is an anytime direct diagnosis approach. We evaluate the algorithm with regard to performance and diagnosis quality using a configuration benchmark from the domain of feature models and an industrial configuration knowledge base from the automotive domain. Results show that FLEXDIAG helps to significantly increase the performance of direct diagnosis search with corresponding quality tradeoffs in terms of minimality and accuracy. Among the plethora of industrial standards available in the context of smart manufacturing, one series of standards is consistently being mentioned for dealing with manufacturing operations management: IEC 62264. Its second part provides a conceptual model for the description of production systems and their capabilities, including runtime information such as concrete maintenance schedules or achieved production goals. In this work, we present a concrete graphical syntax and toolkit for the creation and presentation of IEC 62264-2 compliant models, using techniques from model-driven (software) engineering. We have evaluated our tool by conducting a user study for assessing its usability. © 2020 The Authors.

Text anomaly detection is crucial for identifying spam, misinformation, and offensive language in natural language processing tasks. Despite the growing adoption of embedding-based methods, their effectiveness and generalizability across diverse application scenarios remain under-explored. To address this, we present TAD-Bench, a comprehensive benchmark designed to systematically evaluate embedding-based approaches for text anomaly detection. TAD-Bench integrates multiple datasets spanning different domains, combining state-of-the-art embeddings from large language models with a variety of anomaly detection algorithms. Through extensive experiments, we analyze the interplay between embeddings and detection methods, uncovering their strengths, weaknesses, and applicability to different tasks. These findings offer new perspectives on building more robust, efficient, and generalizable anomaly detection systems for real-world applications. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Non-functional requirements of software address a multitude of objectives, expectations, and even liabilities that must be considered during its development and operation. Typi-cally, these non-functional requirements originate from different domains and their concrete scope, notion, and demarcation to functional requirements is often ambiguous. We conducted a systematic mapping study, including 142 selected primary studies, extracted the focus areas, and synthesized the themes and objectives of the described NFRs. In order to also examine non-engineering-focused aspects related to non-functional requirements in DevOps, we added a backward snowballing step and included 17 primary studies. Our analysis revealed 7 recurrent focus areas and 41 themes that characterize NFRs in DevOps, along with typical objectives for these themes. Overall, the focus areas and themes of NFRs in DevOps are very diverse and reflect the different perspectives required to align software engineering with technical quality, business, compliance, and organizational considerations. The lack of methodological support for specifying, measuring, and evaluating fulfillment of these NFRs in DevOps-driven projects offers ample opportunities for future research in this field. Particularly, there is a need for empirically validated approaches for operationalizing non-engineering-focused objectives of software.

Challenges in agile adaptation is inevitable in software development projects and have to be dealt with by software practitioners. The pathway to excellence in agility requires experience of challenges, failure of process scenarios;and the discovery of working solutions by software development teams. The major purpose of this study is to highlight both the challenges organizations faced when implementing agile techniques and the solutions adopted that proved successful. In order to specify these challenges and working solutions, we performed a multiple case study by using the software Agility Assessment Reference Model (AgilityMod). In this paper, we describe two cases that achieve the highest levels of agility among eight cases and describe their experiences in achieving a good adaptation through the challenges that they faced and the solutions that were found for these challenges. Timed automata (TA) have been widely adopted as a suitable formalism to model time-critical systems. Furthermore, contemporary model-checking tools allow the designer to check whether a TA complies with a system specification. However, the exact timing constants are often uncertain during the design phase. Consequently, the designer is often able to build a TA with a correct structure, however, the timing constants need to be tuned to satisfy the specification. Moreover, even if the TA initially satisfies the specification, it can be the case that just a slight perturbation during the implementation causes a violation of the specification. Unfortunately, model-checking tools are usually not able to provide any reasonable guidance on how to fix the model in such situations. In this paper, we propose several concepts and techniques to cope with the above mentioned design phase issues when dealing with reachability and safety specifications. © 2021, CC BY.

The use of renewable fuels leads to reduction in the use of fossil fuels and environmental pollutants. In this study, the design and analysis of a CCPP based on the use of syngas produced from biomass is discussed. The studied system includes a gasifier system to produce syngas, an external combustion gas turbine and a steam cycle to recover waste heat from combustion gases. Design variables include syngas temperature, syngas moisture content, CPR, TIT, HRSG operating pressure, and PPTD. The effect of design variables on performance components such as power generation, exergy efficiency and total cost rate of the system is investigated. Also, through multi-objective optimization, the optimal design of the system is done. Finally, it is observed that at the final decisioned optimal point, the produced power is 13.4 MW, the exergy efficiency is 17.2%, and the TCR is 118.8 $/h. © 2023
