Background: In this Innovative Practice Work in Progress, we present our initial efforts to integrate formal methods, with a focus on model-checking specifications written in Temporal Logic of Actions $(\text{TLA}^{+})$ , into computer science education, targeting undergraduate juniors/seniors and graduate students. Many safety-critical systems and services crucially depend on correct and reliable behavior. Formal methods can play a key role in ensuring correct and safe system behavior, yet remain underutilized in educational and industry contexts. Aims: We aim to (1) qualitatively assess the state of formal methods in computer science programs, (2) construct level-appropriate examples that could be included midway into one's undergraduate studies, (3) demonstrate how to address successive “failuresy” through progressively stringent safety and liveness requirements, and (4) establish an ongoing framework for assessing interest and relevance among students. Methods: We detail our pedagogical strategy for embedding $\text { TLA }^{+}$ into an intermediate course on formal methods at our institution. After starting with a refresher on mathematical logic, students specify the rules of simple puzzles in $\text { TLA }^{+}$ and use its included model checker (known as TLC) to find a solution. We gradually escalate to more complex, dynamic, event-driven systems, such as the control logic of a microwave oven, where students will study safety and liveness requirements. We subsequently discuss explicit concurrency, along with thread safety and deadlock avoidance, by modeling bounded counters and buffers. Results: Our initial findings suggest that through careful curricular design and choice of examples and tools, it is possible to inspire and cultivate a new generation of software engineers proficient in formal methods. This volume contains a selection of revised papers that were presented at the software Aspects of Robotic Systems, SARS 2011 Workshop and the Machine Learning for System Construction, MLSC 2011 Workshop, held during October 17-18 in Vienna, Austria, under the auspices of the International Symposium Series on Leveraging Applications of Formal Methods, Verification, and Validation, ISoLA. The topics covered by the papers of the SARS and the MLSC workshop demonstrate the breadth and the richness of the respective fields of the two workshops stretching from robot programming to languages and compilation techniques, to real-time and fault tolerance, to dependability, software architectures, computer vision, cognitive robotics, multi-robot-coordination, and simulation to bio-inspired algorithms, and from machine learning for anomaly detection, to model construction in software product lines to classification of web service interfaces. In addition the SARS workshop hosted a special session on the recently launched KOROS project on collaborating robot systems that is borne by a consortium of researchers of the faculties of architecture and planning, computer science, electrical engineering and information technology, and mechanical and industrial engineering at the Vienna university of Technology. The four papers devoted to this session highlight important research directions pursued in this interdisciplinary research project.

A Systematic Review on Security and Safety of Self-Adaptive Systems

Context: Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are increasingly self-adaptive, i.e. they have the ability to introspect and change their behavior. This self-adaptation process must be considered when modeling the safety and security aspects of the ***: This study collects and compares security attacks and safety hazards on self-adaptive systems (SAS) described in the literature. In addition, mitigation and treatment strategies as well as the modeling and analysis approaches are ***: We conducted a systematic literature review on 21 selected papers. The selection process involved a database search and snowballing methodologies. The coding scheme to analyze the content of the papers was obtained through our research questions, existing domain-specific taxonomies, and open ***: Safety and Security are not jointly modeled in the context of self-adaptive systems. The adaptation process is often not considered in the attack and hazard analysis due to naïve assumptions and modeling. The proposed approaches are mostly verified and validated through ***: A thorough and joint modeling approach for safety and security in self-adaptive systems is still an open challenge that needs to be addressed. Empowering multilevel DSMLs with integrated runtime verification

Within Model-Driven software engineering, Domain-Specific Modelling has proven to be a powerful technique to specify systems and systems' behaviour in a formal, yet understandable way. Runtime verification (RV) has been successfully used to verify the correctness of such behaviour. Specifying behaviour requires managing various levels of abstractions, making multilevel modelling (MLM) a suitable approach for this task. In this paper, we present an approach to combine MLM and RV with an example from the domain of distributed real-time systems. The semantics of the specified behaviour as well as the evaluation of correctness properties are given by model transformation rules. This facilitates simulation of the system and checking against real-time temporal logic correctness properties. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Correctness-by-Construction (CbC) is an incremental program construction process to construct functionally correct programs. The programs are constructed stepwise along with a specification that is inherently guaranteed to be satisfied. CbC is complex to use without specialized tool support, since it needs a set of predefined refinement rules of fixed granularity which are additional rules on top of the programming language. Each refinement rule introduces a specific programming statement and developers cannot depart from these rules to construct programs. CbC allows to develop software in a structured and incremental way to ensure correctness, but the limited flexibility is a disadvantage of CbC. In this work, we compare classic CbC with CbC-Block and TraitCbC. Both approaches CbC-Block and TraitCbC, are related to CbC, but they have new language constructs that enable a more flexible software construction approach. We provide for both approaches a programming guideline, which similar to CbC, leads to well-structured programs. CbC-Block extends CbC by adding a refinement rule to insert any block of statements. Therefore, we introduce CbC-Block as an extension of CbC. TraitCbC implements correctness-by-construction on the basis of traits with specified methods. We formally introduce TraitCbC and prove soundness of the construction strategy. All three development approaches are qualitatively compared regarding their programming constructs, tool support, and usability to assess which is best suited for certain tasks and developers. © 2022, CC BY.

Nowadays, the staff of modern operation rooms (ORs) and intensive care units (ICUs) has to handle increasingly complex medical devices and their user interfaces. Inconsistent and often non-sterile user interfaces lead to error-prone and slow reconfiguring actions which in the end may even harm the patient. To overcome these issues interconnected medical devices are necessary. We introduce a new concept for flexible and easy-to-use remote controls which allow to control a range of different devices from different manufacturers. Current solutions are vendor-, and mostly even device-specific and tightly coupled. The effort for manufacturers is high and the maintainability is bad. Thus, controls that can be assigned dynamically to different medical devices are rare or mostly not available. Yet such dynamic controls are badly needed to improve clinical workflows especially in ORs and ICUs. We establish such a remote control setup using the service-oriented architecture defined in the IEEE 11073 SDC standards family. The presented concept is based on dynamic service orchestration to overcome existing problems: The control device and the controlled medical device are published as independent services in the network and an additional composed service interconnects them. We successfully implemented this concept for dynamically assignable controls in a real-world demonstrator with several medical devices from more than five different manufacturers. Performance evaluations show its practicability.

Efficient Detection of Commutative Factors in Factor Graphs

Lifted probabilistic inference exploits symmetries in probabilistic graphical models to allow for tractable probabilistic inference with respect to domain sizes. To exploit symmetries in, e.g., factor graphs, it is crucial to identify commutative factors, i.e., factors having symmetries within themselves due to their arguments being exchangeable. The current state of the art to check whether a factor is commutative with respect to a subset of its arguments iterates over all possible subsets of the factor’s arguments, i.e., O(2n) iterations for a factor with n arguments in the worst case. In this paper, we efficiently solve the problem of detecting commutative factors in a factor graph. In particular, we introduce the detection of commutative factors (DECOR) algorithm, which allows us to drastically reduce the computational effort for checking whether a factor is commutative in practice. We prove that DECOR efficiently identifies restrictions to drastically reduce the number of required iterations and validate the efficiency of DECOR in our empirical evaluation. © 2024, CC BY.
