The development of video games comprises engineering teams within various disciplines, e.g., software engineering, game production, and creative arts. Game jams are a promising approach for (software+) development projects to foster on new product development. This paper evaluates the concept of game jam, a community design/development activity, and its positive effects on new software product development with tight schedules in time-oriented, competitive environments. Game jams have received more public attention in recent times, but the concept itself has not been formally discussed so far. A game jam is a composition of design and development strategies: new product development, participatory design, lightweight construction, rapid experience prototyping, product-value focusing, aesthetics and technology, concurrent development and multidisciplinarity. Although game jams are normally used for rapid prototyping of small computer games, the constellation of the mentioned elements provides a powerful technique for rapidly prototyping new product ideas and disruptive innovations. © 2010 ACM.

Today's online model repositories offer to download and view the textual specifications of e.g. metamodels and models in the browser. For users, in order to efficiently search a model repository, a graphical visualization of the stored models is desirable. First attempts that automatically generate class diagrams as bitmaps, however, do not scale for large models and fail to present all information. In this paper, we present our Web 2.0 MetaModelbrowser, a model visualization service which provides an Ajax-based tree-viewer for efficiently browsing Ecore-based metamodels and their models. As a main contribution of this work the MetaModelbrowser is complementary to existing model repositories in that its visualization service can be integrated into them. The MetaModelbrowser, furthermore, allows zooming in and out of the details of arbitrarily sized models as necessary. Furthermore, we have done some case studies on the one hand how to extend the MetaModelbrowser, e.g., for creation, update, and deletion of model elements as well as supporting model weaving, and on the other hand how to incorporate the MetaModelbrowser in current versioning systems.

With the advent of Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) several model transformation approaches and languages have been developed in the previous 5 years. Most of these existing approaches are metamodel-based with metamodels representing both an abstract syntax of the corresponding modeling language and also a data structure for storing models. However, this implementation specific focus makes it difficult for modelers to develop model transformations, because metamodels do not necessarily define all language concepts explicitly which are available for notation purposes. Therefore, we propose a by-example approach for defining inter-model mappings representing semantic correspondences between concrete domain models, which is more user-friendly, then directly specifying model transformation rules or mappings based on the abstract syntax. The inter-model mappings between domain models can be used to generate model transformation rules, by-example, taking into account the already defined mapping between abstract and concrete syntax elements. With this approach the user's knowledge about the notation of the modeling language is sufficient for the definition of model transformations regarding semantic correspondences. Hence, no detailed knowledge about the metamodel and the model transformation language is required. © 2007 IEEE.

In November 2014, the European Central Bank (ECB) started to directly supervise the largest banks in the Eurozone via the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM). While supervisory risk assessments are usually based on quantitative data and surveys, this work explores whether sentiment analysis is capable of measuring a bank's attitude and opinions towards risk by analyzing text data. For realizing this study, a collection consisting of more than 500 CEO letters and outlook sections extracted from bank annual reports is built up. Based on these data, two distinct experiments are conducted. The evaluations find promising opportunities, but also limitations for risk sentiment analysis in banking supervision. At the level of individual banks, predictions are relatively inaccurate. In contrast, the analysis of aggregated figures revealed strong and significant correlations between uncertainty or negativity in textual disclosures and the quantitative risk indicator's future evolution. Risk sentiment analysis should therefore rather be used for macroprudential analyses than for assessments of individual banks. © 2015 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Many open source software (OSS) development projects use tools and models that come from heterogeneous sources. A project manager, who wants to analyze indicators for the state of the project based on these data sources, faces the challenge of how to link semi-structured information on common concepts across heterogeneous data sources, e.g., source code versions, mailing list entries, and bug reports. Unfortunately, manual analysis is costly, error-prone, and often yields results late for decision making. In this paper we propose linking OSS data sources using semantic web technologies as foundation for providing integrated indicators project status analysis. We introduce the design concept of a project monitoring cockpit, ProMonCo, and evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness with a prototype for calculating communication metrics in a real-world context, the Apache Tomcat project. Major result was that ProMonCo efficiently supports frequent project monitoring by calculating communication metrics based on semantically integrated data originating from heterogeneous OSS project data sources.

Data Mining on time-oriented data has many real-world applications, like optimizing shift plans for shops or hospitals, or analyzing traffic or climate. As those data are often very large and multi-variate, several methods for symbolic representation of time-series have been proposed. Some of them are statistically robust, have a lower-bound distance measure, and are easy to configure, but do not consider temporal structures and domain knowledge of users. Other approaches, proposed as basis for Apriori pattern finding and similar algorithms, are strongly configurable, but the parametrization is hard to perform, resulting in ad-hoc decisions. Our contribution combines the strengths of both approaches: an interactive visual interface that helps defining event classes by applying statistical computations and domain knowledge at the same time. We are not focused on a particular application domain, but intend to make our approach useful for any kind of time-oriented data. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Digital audio has become an almost ubiquitously spread medium, and for many consumers, digital audio is the major distribution and storage form of music. Numerous on-line music stores account for a growing share of record sales. The widespread adoption of digital audio on home computers and especially mobile devices, and numerous on-line music stores show the size of this market. Handling the ever growing size of both private and commercial collections however becomes increasingly difficult. Computer algorithms that can understand and interpret characteristics of music, and organise and recommend them for and to their users can be of great assistance. Music is an inherently multi-modal type of data, and the lyrics associated with the music are as essential to the reception and the message of a song as is the audio. Album covers are carefully designed by artists to convey a message consistent with the music and image of a band. Music videos, fan sites and other sources of information add to that in a usually coherent manner. In this paper, we focus on exploring the lyrics domain of music, and how this information can be combined with the acoustic domain. We evaluate our approach by means of a common task in music information retrieval, musical genre classification. Advancing over previous work that showed improvements with simple feature fusion, were we successfully demonstrated simple approaches of combining different representations of music, we apply a more sophisticated machine learning technique, ensemble classification. The results show that the approach is superior to the best choice of a single algorithm on a single feature set. Moreover, it also releases the user from making this choice explicitly. © 2010 University Sains Malaysia.

The Self-Organising Map (SOM) has been proposed as an alternative interface for exploring Digital Libraries or other big document collections, in addition to conventional search and browsing. With advanced visualisations assisting the user in understanding the contents of the map and its structure, as well as advanced interaction modes as zooming, panning and area selection, the SOM becomes a feasible alternative to classical search interfaces. Several applications show the SOM's utility for this task. However, there are still shortcomings in helping the user understanding the ma, which is essential to fully exploit the SOM's potential as an Information Management tool. There are insufficient methods developed for describing the map to support the user in the analysis of the map contents. In this paper, we give an overview of existing techniques and applications of SOMs in Digital Libraries, and present recent work in assisting the user in exploring the map by automatically describing maps using advanced labelling and summarisation of map regions, focusing on text collections. Therewith, the SOM becomes an attractive tool for Information Management in large corpora.

Requirements managers aim at keeping the set of requirements consistent and up to date throughout the project by conducting the following tasks: requirements categorization, requirements conflict analysis, and requirements tracing. However, the manual conduct of these tasks takes significant effort and is error-prone. In this paper we propose to use semantic technology as foundation for automating the requirements management tasks and introduce the ontology-based reporting approach OntRep. We evaluate the effectiveness and effort the OntRep approach based on a real-world industrial empirical study with professional Austrian IT project managers. Major results were that OntRep provides reasonable capabilities for the automated categorization of requirements, was when compared to a manual approach considerably more effective to identify conflicts, and produced less false positives with similar effort. © 2011, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
