On-board diagnostic (OBD) devices are able to extract information in vehicles to determine traffic flow patterns through localization data, speed, and direction of travel and time. An alternative, low-cost, ubiquitous custom-built mobile application, "SmartDriving" (SD) is presented in this paper. The resulting data from the mobile application was compared with data collected through OBD. Results showed that the collected data was satisfactory regardless of the device used and therefore the mobile application was validated as data collection tool. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Recommender systems assist users in decision-making, where the presentation of recommended items and their explanations are critical factors for enhancing the overall user experience. Although various methods for generating explanations have been proposed, there is still room for improvement, particularly for users who lack expertise in a specific item domain. In this study, we introduce the novel concept of consequence-based explanations, a type of explanation that emphasizes the individual impact of consuming a recommended item on the user, which makes the effect of following recommendations clearer. We conducted an online user study to examine our assumption about the appreciation of consequence-based explanations and their impacts on different explanation aims in recommender systems. Our findings highlight the importance of consequence-based explanations, which were well-received by users and effectively improved user satisfaction in recommender systems. These results provide valuable insights for designing engaging explanations that can enhance the overall user experience in decision-making. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Annotated corpora are an important resource to evaluate methods, compare competing methods, or to train supervised learning methods. When creating a new corpora with the help of human annotators, two important goals are pursued by annotation practitioners: Minimizing the required resources (efficiency) and maximizing the resulting annotation quality (effectiveness). Optimizing these two criteria is a challenging problem, especially in certain domains (e.g. medical, legal). In the scope of my PhD thesis, the aim is to create novel annotation methods for an efficient and effective data acquisition. In this paper, methods and preliminary results are described for two ongoing annotation projects: medical information extraction and question-answering. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Returning universities to full on-campus operations while the COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing has been a controversial discussion in many countries. The risk of large outbreaks in dense course settings is contrasted by the benefits of in-person teaching. Transmission risk depends on a range of parameters, such as vaccination coverage and efficacy, number of contacts and adoption of non-pharmaceutical intervention measures (NPIs). Due to the generalised academic freedom in Europe, many universities are asked to autonomously decide on and implement intervention measures and regulate on-campus operations. In the context of rapidly changing vaccination coverage and parameters of the virus, universities often lack sufficient scientific insight to base these decisions on. To address this problem, we analyse a calibrated, data-driven agent-based simulation of transmission dynamics of 13,284 students and 1,482 faculty members in a medium-sized European university. We use a co-location network reconstructed from student enrollment data and calibrate transmission risk based on outbreak size distributions in education institutions. We focus on actionable interventions that are part of the already existing decision-making process of universities to provide guidance for concrete policy decisions. Here we show that, with the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, even a reduction to 25% occupancy and universal mask mandates are not enough to prevent large outbreaks given the vaccination coverage of about 80% recently reported for students in Austria. Our results show that controlling the spread of the virus with available vaccines in combination with NPIs is not feasible in the university setting if presence of students and faculty on campus is required. © 2022, CC BY-SA.

Patients do not access physicians at random but rather via naturally emerging networks of patient flows between them. As retirements, mass quarantines and absence due to sickness during pandemics, or other shocks thin out these networks, the system might be pushed closer to a tipping point where it loses its ability to deliver care to the population. Here we propose a data-driven framework to quantify the regional resilience to such shocks of primary and secondary care in Austria via an agent-based model. For each region and medical specialty we construct detailed patient-sharing networks from administrative data and stress-test these networks by removing increasing numbers of physicians from the system. This allows us to measure regional resilience indicators describing how many physicians can be removed from a certain area before individual patients won't be treated anymore. We find that such tipping points do indeed exist and that regions and medical specialties differ substantially in their resilience. These systemic differences can be related to indicators for individual physicians by quantifying how much their hypothetical removal would stress the system (risk score) or how much of the stress from the removal of other physicians they would be able to absorb (benefit score). Our stress-testing framework could enable health authorities to rapidly identify bottlenecks in access to care as well as to inspect these naturally emerging physician networks and how potential absences would impact them. © 2022, CC BY.

Revived interest in lunar and planetary exploration is heralding a new era for human spaceflight, characterized by frequent strain on astronaut's mental well-being, which stems from increased exposure to isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) conditions. Whilst Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) has been employed to facilitate self-help interventions to mitigate challenges caused by isolated environments in several domains, its applicability in support of future space expeditions remains largely unexplored. To address this limitation, we administered the use of distinct IVR environments to crew members (n=5) partaking in a simulated lunar habitat study. Utilizing a Bayesian approach to scrutinize small group data, we discovered a significant relationship between IVR usage and a reduction in perceived stress-related symptoms, particularly those associated with asthenia (syndrome often linked to chronic fatigue and weakness;a condition characterized by feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion that can be amplified in ICE conditions). The reductions were most prominent with the use of interactive virtual environments. Cyber-Physical Production systems (CPPSs), such as automated car manufacturing plants, execute a configurable sequence of production steps to manufacture products from a product portfolio. In CPPS engineering, domain experts start with manually determining feasible production step sequences and resources based on implicit knowledge. This process is hard to reproduce and highly inefficient. In this paper, we present the Extended Iterative Process Sequence Exploration (eIPSE) approach to derive variability models for products, processes, and resources from a domain-specific description. To automate the integrated exploration and configuration process for a CPPS, we provide a toolchain which automatically reduces the configuration space and allows to generate CPPS artifacts, such as control code for resources. We evaluate the approach with four real-world use cases, including the generation of control code artifacts, and an observational user study to collect feedback from engineers with different backgrounds. The results confirm the usefulness of the eIPSE approach and accompanying prototype to straightforwardly configure a desired CPPS. © 2024, CC BY.

Objective: The European Health Data Space (EHDS) shapes the digital transformation of healthcare in Europe. The EHDS regulations will also accelerate the use of health data for research, innovation, policy-making, and regulatory activities for secondary use of data (known as EHDS2). The Integration of heterogeneous Data and Evidence towards Regulatory and HTA Acceptance (IDERHA) project builds one of the first pan-European health data spaces in alignment with the EHDS2 requirements, addressing lung cancer as a *** and Methods: In this study, we conducted a comprehensive review of the EHDS regulations and technical requirements for EHDS2. Mainly utilizing the results of the Joint Action Towards the European Health Data Space (TEHDAS) project to identify the framework of IDERHA’s alignment with EHDS. We also conducted an internal webinar and an external workshop with EHDS experts to share expertise on the EHDS requirements and ***: We identified the minimum-set of requirements for aligning IDERHA infrastructure with the planned EHDS regulations, including user journey, concepts, terminologies, and standards. The future IDERHA framework (i.e., platform architecture, standardization approaches, documentation, etc.) will be developed ***: The IDERHA's alignment plan with EHDS2 necessitates the implementation of three categories of standardization for: data discoverability (DCAT-AP), enabling semantics interoperability (OMOP), and health data exchange (DICOM and FHIR). The main challenge is that some standards are still being refined, e.g., the extension of the DCAT-AP (HealthDCAT-AP). Additionally, extensions to the OHDSI OMOP CMD for representing the Patient-Generated Health Data are still needed.
