The discordance of the available Building Performance Evaluation Tools with the capabilities and expectations of the design community and complexities related to data availability and accessibility are among the most important technical barriers against sufficient adoption of such tools to support and guide design decisions. On the other hand, the complexity of the design problem, a consequence of the large number of variables and options involved (e.g., financial, environmental, technical, and legal factors) calls for more effective approaches towards sustainable design optimization. The SEMERGY project seeks to overcome such technical challenges through development of a user-friendly design optimization environment, tailored to suit the specific requirements and skills of the novice and professionaldesign community. The key feature of the SEMERGY environment is the incorporation of semantic web technology toward efficient search for and compilation of input information required for comprehensive analysis and evaluation of candidate design options supported by multi‐objective decision support methods. The present contribution briefly presents the underlying concept of the SEMERGY environment. It particularly focuses on SEMERGY's beta release, designed for optimization of retrofit projects in view of potential construction options. Sharing research data is becoming increasingly important as it enables peers to validate and reproduce data driven experiments. Also exchanging data allows scientists to reuse data in different contexts and gather new knowledge from available sources. But with increasing volume of data, researchers need to reference exact versions of datasets. Until now access to research data often based on single archives of data files where versioning and subsetting support is limited. In this paper we introduce a mechanism that allows researchers to create versioned subsets of research data which can be cited and shared in a lightweight manner. We demonstrate a prototype that supports researchers in creating subsets based on filtering and sorting source data. These subsets can be cited for later reference and reuse. The system produces evidence that allows users to verify the correctness and completeness of a subset based on cryptographic hashing. We describe a replication scenario for enabling scalable data citation in dynamic contexts.

In graph pattern matching the task is to find inside a given graph some specific smaller graph, called pattern. One way of solving this problem is to express it in the query language of a database system. We express graph pattern matching in four different query languages and benchmark corresponding database systems to evaluate their performance on this task. The considered systems and languages are the relational database PostgreSQL with SQL, the RDF database Jena TDB with SPARQL, the graph database Neo4j with Cypher, and the deductive database Clingo with ASP. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Patent search tasks are challenging and often require many hours or even days to be completed. Patent search systems that integrate multiple search tools could assist patent examiners to complete the demanding patent search tasks by using the set of search tools most suitable for the task at hand. PerFed- Pat is an interactive patent search system designed on this principle and based on the federated search approach and the ezDL framework. PerFedPat provides core services to search multiple online patent resources, while hiding complexity from the end user. The extensible architecture of the system enables the integration and parallel use of multiple search tools. In this paper, we present part of a user study of the PerFedPat system and we also discuss the results, mostly focused on the research question: could the patent examiners efficiently use a patent search system that integrates multiple resources, search tools and UIs?. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

The citation count is an important factor to estimate the relevance and significance of academic publications. However, it is not possible to use this measure for papers which are too new. A solution to this problem is to estimate the future citation counts. There are existing works, which point out that graph mining techniques lead to the best results. We aim at improving the prediction of future citation counts by introducing a new feature. This feature is based on frequent graph pattern mining in the so-called citation network constructed on the basis of a dataset of scientific publications. Our new feature improves the accuracy of citation count prediction, and outperforms the state-of-the-art features in many cases which we show with experiments on two real datasets. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Petroglyphs (rock engravings) are important artifacts for the documentation and analysis of early human life. Recent improvements in 3D scanning and 3D reconstruction enable the accurate 3D reconstruction of petroglyphs from rock surfaces at sub-millimeter resolution. To enable the indexing, matching, and recognition of petroglyphs in petroglyph databases, the shapes must first be segmented from the reconstructed rock surface. The absence of robust 3D segmentation methods for petroglyphs leaves a gap in the digital processing workflow. In this paper, we present a semi-automatic method for petroglyph segmentation for high-resolution 3D surface reconstructions. A comprehensive evaluation shows that our method is able to robustly segment petroglyphs with high accuracy and that the incorporation of 3D information is crucial to solve the segmentation problem. The presented method represents a major step towards the completion of a full 3D digital processing workflow of petroglyphs.

Many international corporations have globally distributed supply chains exposing their operations to various local risks, e.g., natural disasters. To facilitate assessment of these risks, corporations have to identify geographic locations of their suppliers. However, automated identification of supplier locations is problematic for areas where geocoding of addresses is not effective. In this paper, we present a method to infer location information from user-generated geographic information retrieved from Wikimapia and Foursquare. Using a sample of 139 Indonesian factories supplying large international corporations, we compared results from our approach with locations retrieved from four widely-used geocoding services. We found that best results could be achieved using data from Foursquare, where we retrieved a location within 1km for 73% of the factories. Given that coordinates are only an input for decision making, we linked retrieved locations exemplary to semantic data to determine the risk exposure due to volcanic eruptions for each factory. Both steps combined present an approach for automated supplier risk assessment based on social and semantic data. © Copyright 2014 ACM.

In recent years, enterprises and emergency response teams have started to use user-generated content to monitor crises, events and trends. Especially in critical situations, decision makers must, above all, quickly assess huge amounts of data. E?ective geographical visualization and aggregation of collected data is an important prerequisite to enable decision makers to infer the impact of a detected event on, for example, their supply chains and other physical establishments. However, in existing literature the aspect of geographical visualization of automatically analysed events is hardly addressed. In this paper, we propose to introduce hierarchical levels of detail, a concept from Geographic Information systems, for the visualization of user-generated data describing a local event. We developed a tool which can improve the assessment of regional impacts by o?ering the possibility to browse and visualize results on layers aggregating data along individually defined hierarchical dimensions, e.g. geographical or political districts.

We present in this paper a software module for the diagnosis of Automatic Bloc Signaling installation failures in situations where the train open line figures as blocked, although it is, in reality, free. The software module created by us, LCOBla, is designed for the use of maintenance staff specialized in Signals, Centralizations, Blocking (SCB) at the Romanian Railroad Company (CFR). LCOBla allows a quick and correct design of the failure causes associated with these kinds of signaling and contributes to the maintenance staff performance. Fast failure remedy improves train traffic flow and reduces train delay times. The LCOBla software module uses the diagnosis chart created for these kinds of failures, which, in turn, is based on the actual block schemes and on technical recommendations for these types of installations. The module is one of a series of modules designed to diagnose each failure type, for the various railway traffic safety installation types. © 2014 IEEE.

This work presents a method to determine rotor oscillations during a three-phased sudden short-circuit test of a synchronous generator. To our best current knowledge, no such similar method is yet published in the technical literature. During the periodic and non-periodic component separation of the three phase currents, it was found that the time difference between the currents' extreme values, for any of the three phase currents, does not have a 10 ms constant value, as in the stationary phase. Investigating why this happens we found that these variations are caused by the rotor oscillations. Certain parameters of a synchronous generator's rotor and of the rotor's oscillations are measured during the sudden three-phased short-circuit test. Based on these readings, with the method presented in this paper, we can compute the rotor's mechanical oscillation amplitudes and the transient process durations. Using the measured values, the equation describing the rotor's mechanical oscillations, independent of its power, can be re-written. Knowledge of the oscillation amplitudes and their durations is necessary for a correct loop control design and in establishing the generator's performance. © 2014 IEEE.
