The detachment of fine adhered powder particles in the course of bulk particle-wall contacts is studied with a numerical Discrete Element Method (DEM). The model relies on an adhesive DEM to describe the carrier and the individual dust particle motion. Further, dust detachment functions are modified in a non-adhesive DEM method, in which only the coarse carrier particles are tracked as one composed bulk particle. The realized dust release functions include a normal and a tangential lift-off condition. Both dust release functions are benchmarked based on dust-resolved adhesive DEM simulations by varying the restitution coefficient and the impact angle in the event of bulk particle-wall contacts. The normal and the tangential lift-off conditions both reflect the physical detachment of individual dust particles very well assuming fine particles of constant size. The application of the enhanced dust detachment functions therefore allows to predict dust release of individual dust particles with significantly less computing time. © particleS 2021.

Nowadays, the treatment of ozone has become critically important due to the health risks caused by even minimal amount of ozone in the ambient air. In this work, LaFeO3 doped with Mg, Ca, Sr and Ce on A-site are synthesized by sol-gel method and adopted as a highly active ozone decomposition catalyst. The results show that the Ce doped LaFeO3 exhibits the highest catalytic activity with the optimal doping concentration marked as La0.5Ce0.5FeO3. It reaches high conversion efficiency of 97 % and 90 % to 1000 ppm ozone at high weight hourly space velocity of 720,000 and 1440,000 mL g−1 h−1, which is one of the highest in the literature. The distortion of [FeO6] octahedra reached the maximum when the doping amount of Ce was 0.5 as revealed by X-ray diffraction and Rietveld fitting. The high ozone catalytic activity could be assigned to the easy electron loss from eg orbit caused by high crystal field splitting energy, abundant oxygen vacancies resulting from the biggest distortion of [FeO6] octahedra and quick transfer between Fe2+ and Fe3+. © 2024

In this work, MnOx nanoparticles were produced by a continuous electrospray-assisted flame spray pyrolysis (EAFSP) method. In this regard, the precursor solutions containing manganese (II) nitrate hydrate (MnN) dissolved in 1-propanol precursor solutions are initially atomized into charged droplets by electrospray in the microdripping mode. Then, the electrically charged precursor droplets enter the flame in a controlled manner without requiring a dispersion gas. The synthesis was carried out with varying horizontal injection locations from different heights above the burner (HAB) to control the high-temperature residence times of the charged droplets without changing the flame conditions for producing MnOx nanoparticles with tunable particle properties. Various diagnostics such as TEM, SMPS, BET, and XRD were applied for analyzing the formation of primary and agglomerate MnOx nanoparticles as well as their crystal phases with varying temperature histories. Furthermore, phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) experiments have been conducted to track the evolution of droplet size and droplet axial velocity in the electrospray flame, allowing for the study of combustion of electrosprayed MnN droplets and the presence of µ-explosions in the flame. © 2023, The Authors. GridSort: Image-based Optical Bulk Material Sorting Using Convolutional LSTMs

Optical sorters separate particles of different classes by first detecting them while they are transported, e.g., on a conveyor belt, and subsequently bursting out particles of undesired classes using compressed air nozzles. Currently, the most promising results are achieved by predictive tracking, a multitarget tracking approach based on extracted midpoints from area-scan camera images that analyzes the particles’ motion and activates the nozzles accordingly. However, predictive tracking requires expert knowledge for setup and preceding object detection. Moreover, particle shapes are only considered implicitly, and the need to solve an association problem rises the computational complexity of the algorithm. In this paper, we present GridSort, an image-based approach that forecasts the scene at the nozzle array using a convolutional long short-term memory neural network and subsequently extracts nozzle activations, thus circumventing the aforementioned weaknesses. We show how GridSort can be trained in an unsupervised fashion and evaluate it using a coupled discrete element–computational fluid dynamics simulation of an optical sorter. We compare our method with predictive tracking in terms of sorting accuracy and demonstrate that it is an easy-to-apply alternative while achieving state-of-the-art results.

The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is an important issue for iron and steel industry. Biomassbased reducing agents, also called bioreductants, could be used in modern blast furnaces’ PCI (pulverised coal injection) systems to substitute pulverized coal which is conveyed pneumatically in dense phase flow regime and injected into the blast furnace to substitute the more expensive coke. To evaluate the feasibility of doing so and the implications on the conveying system one sample of torrefied biomass has been comminuted on two different mill types and subsequently analysed and tested on a bench scale dense phase conveying system. It could be observed that increasing the sphericity of the finely ground bioreductant by the right mill choice is possible and – furthermore – vital for a successful conveying. Parameters like mass flow rate and solids loading ratio also appear to benefit from an increase in sphericity, which was expected from previous studies. However, for substituting injection coal with bioreductant economically viable without making significant changes on existing conveying systems, further improvements of the bioreductant are imperative. © 2022, ETA-Florence Renewable Energies., All rights reserved.

Personalization of Lipid-Based Oral Dosage Forms Via Filament-Based 3D-Printing

While filament-based 3D-printing (3DP) is the most utilized 3DP technology in the pharmaceutical field, it has not been demonstrated for processing of drug-loaded lipid-based formulations. This work exploits hexa-glycerol ester of palmitic acid (Pg6-C16-P) as an advanced lipid material, loaded with felodipine as a poorly soluble model drug, for fabricating novel oral solid dosage forms (OSDFs) via filament-based 3D-printing. After material melt-blending, the formulation was extruded using the liquid feeding approach to obtain a mechanically manageable, and hence 3D-printable, drug-loaded lipid filament. The fabrication of geometries with variable infill densities was demonstrated. The extent of infill density was found to significantly impact the optimal printing parameters required to achieve the desired shape. The solid-state analysis confirmed the amorphous state of felodipine after 3DP. The release rate of the drug was studied via in vitro dissolution test and showed to be tunable based on the tablet geometry. It was also possible to tailor the design of the dosage form to perform similarly to a commercial product. The formulation was evidenced as safe via in vitro toxicity studies with improved felodipine solubility. This study establishes filament-based 3DP as an alternative platform viable for fabricating advanced lipid-based OSDFs, and concurrently, promotes Pg6-C16-P as a promising and high performing 3DP lipid material for drug delivery. © 2024, The Authors. Agglomerates are formed in industrial practice, e.g. pharmaceutical manufacturing and food processing. In case of fluidized bed productions, a solid-containing liquid, called binder, is sprayed on the particles and fluidization guarantees good mixing and high heat/mass transfer between particles, liquid and gas phase. Continuous operation provides additional benefits such as constant product throughput and quality. This work experimentally investigates the influence of the gas inlet temperature on the dynamics of continuous spray agglomeration for two different operation strategies (with and without bed mass control). For the experiments, glass beads and a solution of water and hydroxylpropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) are used as solid and binder, respectively. Focus is on analysis of the influence on the product quality, e.g. characteristic particle size, shape and apparent density. © 2021 CFB 2021 - Proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Fluidized Bed technology. Production of composites with high relative permittivity using the spouted bed technique

This contribution presents a new application of the spouted bed technique. The developed production process involves coating fine copper particles with a polymer in a spouted bed plant and then hot pressing the produced granules to form a compact consisting of a copper–polymer composite with a high filling degree. The fabricated composites possess high relative permittivity, which is advantageous for the production of effective capacitors. With increasing filling degree of copper, the relative permittivity of the composites increased, with a maximum relative permittivity of 214 obtained for the composite containing 78.1 vol% copper. Such a high filling degree can be achieved with conductive particles without obtaining a conductive composite by using the spouted bed technology in the production process. The high relative permittivity results from the high filling degree of particles isolated by a polymer coating.

One possibility is to use biomass-based reducing agents, also called bioreducers, to replace at least partly the fossil reducing agents. Modern blast furnaces use pulverized coal which is conveyed pneumatically in dense phase flow regime and injected into the blast furnace to substitute the more expensive coke. The substitution of this reducing agent by pulverized biochar is the target of the present study. Samples of different wood types were pyrolyzed under varying treatment intensities and finely ground with varying comminution techniques. The properties of the pyrolyzed wood powders were investigated. It is shown that the fluidization behaviour substantially improved with higher particle sphericity and lower proportion of ultrafine grains. Moreover, data show that by varying the pyrolysis temperature and employed comminution forces these powder characteristics are modified to an extent sufficient to produce well fluidizable bioreducers. © 2021, ETA-Florence Renewable Energies.
