In this paper, a sequential quadratic programming method is presented for largescale nonlinear and possibly non-convex model predictive control (MPC) optimization problem which is often set up with a separable objective function. By introducing the so-call consensus constraints to separate the couplings among the subsystems. The resulting QP subproblem is formulated in a separable form, which makes it possible to use the existing alternating direction methods, like ADMM, to efficiently compute Newton steps for the overall system in a distributed way. In order to enforce the convergence rate of the distributed computation, a distributed line search with local merit functions is also proposed.

In this paper a novel battery electric vehicle (BEV) concept based on a small fixed and a big swappable li-ion battery pack is proposed in order to achieve: longer range, lower initial purchase price and lower energy consumption at short ranges. For short ranges the BEV is only powered by the relatively small fixed battery pack, without the large swappable battery pack. In this way the mass of the vehicle is reduced and therefore the energy consumed per unit distance is improved. For higher ranges the BEV is powered by both battery packs. This concept allows the introduction of subscription-based ownership models to distribute the cost of the large battery pack over the vehicle lifetime. A methodology is proposed for the analysis and evaluation of the proposed concept in comparison with a direct owned non swappable single pack BEV, proving that significant improvements on city fuel economy (up to 20 %) and economic benefits are achievable under several scenarios. These results encourage further study of battery swapping service plans and energy management strategies.

During many years, battery models have been proposed with different levels of accuracy and complexity. In some cases, simple low-order aggregated battery pack models may be more appropriate and feasible than complex physic-chemical or high-order multi-cell battery pack models. For example: in early stages of the system design process, in non-focused battery applications, or whenever low configuration effort or low computational complexity is a requirement. The latter may be the case of Electrical Equivalent Circuit Models (EECM) suitable for energy optimization purposes at a system level in the context of energy management or sizing problem of energy storage systems. In this paper, an improved parametrization method for Li-ion linear static EECMs based on the so called concept of direct current resistance (DCR) is presented. By drawing on a DCR-based parametrization, the influence of both diffusion polarization effects and changing of Open-Circuit Voltage (OCV) are virtually excluded on the estimation of the battery's inner resistance. This results in a parametrization that only accounts for pure ohmic and charge transfer effects, which may be beneficial, since these effects dominate the battery dynamic power response in the range of interest of many applications, including electro-mobility. Model validation and performance evaluation is achieved in simulations by comparison with other low and high order EECM battery models over a dynamic driving profile. Significant improvements in terms of terminal voltage and power losses estimation may be achieved by a DCR-based parametrization, which in its simplest form may only require one short pulse characterization test within a relatively wide range of SoCs and currents. Experimental data from a 53 Ah Li-ion pouch cell produced by Kokam (Type SLPB 120216216) with Nickel Manganese Cobalt oxide (NMC) cathode material is used.

This paper describes the implementation and evaluation of technologies that predict and assess the future aircraft energy state and autoflight configuration, and provide appropriate alerting to better inform pilots of the effect of problematic autoflight inputs or conditions. Prediction algorithms are used to extrapolate the current state of the aircraft based on flight management, autopilot and autothrottle system control laws and knowledge of mode transition logic. The resulting predicted trajectory represents the future four-dimensional flight path of the aircraft if the current course of action is continued. Probabilistic methods are used to estimate the trim envelope through high-fidelity model-based computation of attainable equilibrium sets. The corresponding maneuverability limitations of the aircraft are determined through a robust reachability analysis (relative to the trim envelope) through an optimal control formulation. The combination of prediction and assessment technologies are used to trigger timely alerts to avoid loss of control situations. The maneuvering envelope limits are also indicated on the primary flight display, and the predicted trajectory is displayed on navigation and vertical situation displays. The display features and alerts were evaluated in the Advanced Concepts Flight Simulator at NASA Ames Research Center, where commercial airline crews flew multiple problematic approach and landings scenarios to investigate the impact on current and future aircraft energy state awareness. Results show that the display features and alerts have the potential to improve situational awareness of what the automation is doing now and what it will do in the future. © 2015, American institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc. Collocating geostationary satellites sharing the same position is much demanded for satellite operation recently,the separation strategies are adopted to safeguard the satellites collocated of leaving the relative distance beyond collision with different sets of orbit *** paper presents the mathematical prototypes which establish the allowable relative distance with uncertainty of orbital determination(OD),as well as the orbital element offset for each pair of collocated satellites,and puts forward algorithms to build such relationship to face the challenge of putting three satellites sharing the same position,the algorithms to allocate the longitude,eccentricity and inclination for each satellite are also given to ascertain that the mathematical prototypes are the guide specification to design collocation strategy for geostationary satellites.

This paper presents a comparative study of the influence of different aggregated electrical circuit battery models in the sizing process of a hybrid energy storage system (ESS), composed by Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors (SCs). The aim is to find the number of cells required to propel a certain vehicle over a predefined driving cycle. During this process, three battery models will be considered. The first consists in a linear static zeroeth order battery model over a restricted operating window. The second is a non-linear static model, while the third takes into account first- order dynamics of the battery. Simulation results demonstrate that the adoption of a more accurate battery model in the sizing of hybrid ESS's prevents over-sizing, leading to a reduction in the number of cells of up to 29%, and a cost decrease of up to 10%.

While a great number of battery balancing circuit topologies have been proposed, the unique control objective typically pursued is equalization of single cell charge. However, a balancing circuit could offer potentially more control features, especially with topologies able to provide bidirectional power flow control. This has not been explored yet in literature or at least not with enough thoroughness. Thus, in addition to charge balancing, up to three more objectives could be pursued simultaneously. Firstly, virtual resistance control, in order to provide dynamic compensation for variations in terminal cell voltage. Secondly, thermal management, to achieve a more uniform temperature distribution within a battery pack. Third, on-board diagnosis or fault detection tools, e.g. to perform characterization tests or to identify and even isolate problematic cells. In this paper, this issue is discussed and evaluated for a battery pack made up of 48 large format Li-Ion cells in series in a e-mobility application. Simulation results demonstrate the technical feasibility of this newly defined concept.

In this paper we report new computational results with an approach based on the generation of general cutting planes for several classes of Binary Integer Programming (BIP) Problems such as Generalized Assignment, Multi-Dimensional Knapsack, Capacitated P-median and Capacitated Network Location. These problems are characterized by a formulation including a great number of knapsack constraints, which, in general make these problems very hard to solve. The state of the art on these problems requires to use approaches based on Lagrangean Relaxation or decomposition approaches like Dantzig-Wolfe and Column Generation techniques. In this paper we present an approach based on the generation of general cutting planes of the polytope associated with each knapsack constraints. Computational experience on a wide set of benchamrk instances is carried out.

This paper presents a comparative study between two non-causal algorithms for the energy management problem of electric vehicles, endowed with batteries and supercapacitors (SCs). Toward that goal, an optimization-based energy problem is formulated, which targets the minimization of the source's energy losses throughout a given driving cycle. This problem is solved, firstly, with the help of a fast (but locally optimal) non-linear programming solver;and, secondly, with a slow, but globally optimal, dynamic programming (DP) approach. Simulation results will demonstrate that, despite the different theoretical properties associated with these two solver approaches, both generate similar solutions. In the second part of the work, we will develop a filter-based energy management algorithm, i.e., employ batteries to provide the low-frequency content of the power demand, while SCs cover the high-frequency demand. Our approach builds on the idea of adapting the filter's time constant throughout the vehicle's journey, using, for that purpose, a fuzzy logic algorithm and the information of the state of the vehicle. In comparison with the traditional fixed time-constant approach, the simulation results show that under some conditions the adaptive time-constant algorithm has the potential to reduce the energy losses of the sources by up to 62%.
