Modeling and detection of rotating stall in axial flow compressors, II: Experimental study for a low-speed compressor in Beihang University

Early detection of rotating stall and surge in axial flow compressors is of great importance for improving the working efficiency and stability of the compressor. Based on deterministic learning (DL) theory and dynamical pattern recognition, this paper presents experimental research for approximately accurate modeling and rapid detection of stall precursors, and then employs a low-speed axial flow compressor test rig of Beihang University for online experimental verification. Firstly, by installing high response dynamic pressure transducers arranged circumferentially around the casing of the axial compressor, the dynamic pressure data are collected. Based on deterministic learning theory, the system dynamics underlying prestall and stall inception patterns are identified. Secondly, based on modeling results, rapid detection of small oscillation faults is used to perform the detection of stall precursors. Sufficient online experiments are conducted to investigate the efficiency of the approach. Results show that, in different working speeds, this approach successfully detects inception signal of aerodynamic instability of the compressor 0:3 s~1 s in advance to the start of rotating stalls. ©, 2014, South China University of Technology. Cooperative guidance for multiple flight vehicles against single moving target is studied in this paper. Two finite-time consensus protocols are developed for multi-agent system with input saturation which underlay the design of cooperative guidance law. The cooperative guidance approaches are investigated to solve the many-to-one interception problem, where two novel guidance laws considering the actuator saturation are proposed to guarantee multiple flight vehicles can intercept the target simultaneously. Simulations for a three-to-one scenario are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design approaches.

Interacting with a random environment, Learning Automata (LAs) are automata that, generally, have the task of learning the optimal action based on responses from the environment. Distinct from the traditional goal of Learning Automata to select only the optimal action out of a set of actions, this paper considers a multiple-action selection problem and proposes a novel class of Learning Automata for selecting an optimal subset of actions. Their objective is to identify the optimal subset: the top k out of r actions. Based on conventional continuous pursuit and discretized pursuit learning schemes, this paper introduces four pursuit learning schemes for selecting the optimal subset, called continuous equal pursuit, discretized equal pursuit, continuous unequal pursuit and discretized unequal pursuit learning schemes, respectively. In conjunction with a reward-inaction learning paradigm, the above four schemes lead to four versions of pursuit Learning Automata for selecting the optimal subset. The simulation results present a quantitative comparison between them.

An adaptive distributed differential evolution algorithm is proposed based on the change of the individual's fitness value. Firstly, the initial population is divided into several subpopulations. When the migration condition is satisfied, the best individual in each subpopulation will replace the worst individual of its neighbor subpopulations according to the Von Neumann topology. The migration mechanism among subpopulations enables the information to be communicated in the whole population. Meanwhile, the adaptive mechanism of F and CR is presented for assigning different F and CR to each individual according to the individual's fitness. Numerical results show that, the proposed algorithm is beneficial to explore the solution space, which can avoid the premature convergence and search the excellent solutions.

In this paper, we propose the method to estimate the motion direction of walking based on brain wave activity. The signals of 11-channel as Electroencephalogram (EEG) of a motor area are measured to estimate the direction of a walking. After measuring the signals of 11-channel related to the motion of the lower limb, the several signal processing algorithm are applied for the signals. Specifically, we have used band pass filter to cut off the signal other than between 5-35[Hz], JADE as a form of Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Multi-class Support Vector Machine (SVM) as a motion classifier. The interval of a motor area about the lower limb at two sides of the brain is very near and a motor area about it is located behind skin of scalp. Therefore, it is difficult for us to measure the EEG and cut off noises. However, we think that our proposal algorithm is effective to develop the real-time Brain Machine Interface (BMI). We performed the experiment that one subject lying down on a bed with closed eyes images the motion of walking, standing and turning the left and right direction among interval of 30 seconds, respectively. As the result of applying our algorithm, the recognition rate within 50-60[%] was achieved. But, it is necessary to increase number of subject, to verify the algorithm and to raise the precision of the rate. The final target is to reveal the estimation method of motion direction of walking by means of several kinds of experiments.

With the progress of DNA computing, DNA-based cryptography becomes an emerging interdisciplinary research field. In this paper, we present a novel DNA cryptography that takes advantage of DNA self-assembled structure. Making use of the toehold strands recognition and strand displacement, the bit-wise exclusive-or (XOR) operation is carried out to fulfill the information encryption and decryption in the form of a one-time-pad. The security of this system mainly comes from the physical isolation and specificity of DNA molecules. The system is constructed by using complex DNA self-assembly, in which technique of fluorescent detection is utilized to implement the signal processing. In the proposed DNA cryptography, the XOR operation at each bit is carried out individually, thus the encryption and decryption process could be conducted in a massive, parallel way. This work may demonstrate that DNA cryptography has the great potential applications in the field of information security.

A short-term heuristic method of pumped (hydroenergy) storage plants (PSP) operation for regulating peak loads of multiple power grids has been developed based on the actual project of East China Grid (ECG). The power generation or pump power of PSP is decided by the maximum or minimum value of the total load at each iteration. And power generation or pump power is further allocated between power grids using two strategies, known as power cutup and combination optimization. This process is repeated till the desired target objectives of PSP are satisfied. The case results over ECG show that the proposed method is able to solve the load distribution problem of PSP between multiple power grids. ©2014 State Grid Electric Power Research institute Press.

This paper studies fundamentals of classical, classical-quantum and quantum information technologies to advance sensing, data acquisition and computing. The overall goal is to define, analyze and evaluate classical and quantum-mechanical information measures pertained to data processing by low-power nanoelectronic devices, nanoICs, nano-waveguides, CMOS nanophotonics, etc. Electronic, optoelectronic and photonic systems operate on the electron-and photon-induced transductions. There are fundamental differences in physics, arithmetics, device- and system-level solutions as electrostatic and quantum phenomena are utilized. This paper analyzes multi-physics quantum → classical processing. We enable a knowledge base in cognizant areas across computer science and engineering. Our findings enable existing and future communication, sensing, information fusion, computing and processing platforms. Consistent tools and practical schemes facilitate developments of novel engineering solutions, technical readiness, technological capabilities and commercialization capacities. © 2014 IEEE.

Recently, semiconductor and noble metal complex nanomaterials have attracted ever-increasing attention because of the realization of multiple functionalities in a single entity. In this study, Ag-TiO2 core-shell nanocomposites were synthesized by hydrolysis of butyl titanate on the surface of Ag nanowires. Due to efficient electron transfer at the Ag-TiO2 interface, the as-prepared nanocomposites exhibit much higher photocatalytic activity than bare TiO2 films, as demonstrated by the enhanced photodegradation rate of R6G and methyl blue molecules. In the meanwhile, such nanocomposites serve as a high-sensitivity surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for in situ monitoring of the photocatalytic decomposition reaction, and the substrate is recyclable due to its self-cleaning function. Full-wave numerical calculations reveal that the improved photocatalysis and SERS efficiencies are attributed to the largely enhanced electromagnetic near-field in the nanocomposites. Our results point out that bifunctional semiconductor-metal hybrids hold great promise for simultaneously detecting and decomposing organic pollutants in the environment. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.
