Scalable manufacture of ultratough physical cross-linked hybrid films for durable radiative cooling

Passive radiative cooling (PRC) presents a promising innovation for zero-energy consumption and environmental cooling. However, recent advances in elucidating these PRC properties have so-far delivered few real-world applications, which require both up-scaling fabrication and long-term environmental stability. Here, we report a novel physical cross-linked melt-rolling-stretching process to develop metre-scale hybrid ultratough PRC films (MHTF), where the polypropylene (PP) and styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene (SEBS) form a robust thermoplastic interpenetrating polymer network (TIPN). Impressively, MHTF achieves a high production with an annual output of 100,000 square meters, laying a solid foundation for the industrialization of radiative cooling technologies. The obtained MHTF film shows both ideal stress (12.9 MPa), ultrahigh strain (1790.1 %), ultrahigh toughness (213.7 MJ m −3 ), excellent solar reflectance (93.9 %), and mid-infrared (MIR) emittance (95.4 %). These high-quality films provide continuous sub-ambient cooling in an outdoor setting with a temperature drop of ~5.8 °C and ~6.7 °C during the daytime and nighttime, respectively, demonstrating energy-saving potential on a worldwide scale. Additionally, we further confirm the outdoor aging resistance, self-cleaning properties, and wearability of MHTF. This method, which opens up new avenues for the mass production of high-fgure-of-merit PRC films, is expected to accelerate the commercialization and arrival of the PRC era in real-world applications.

The number of global Internet of Things devices has increased rapidly and has a wide range of application markets. Access authentication methods for massive heterogeneous IoT devices are complicated, and central servers and trusted platforms cannot take effective measures against tampered devices. Analyzing the problems and challenges faced by IoT devices, this paper proposes a unified authentication scheme for IoT blockchain devices based on PUF. The PUF model is used to authenticate IoT devices, and the model parameters are decomposed into various parts and stored in each node in the blockchain. The homomorphic hash function is used to aggregate the partial authentication response values generated by the distribution in the invisible case to complete the authentication of the device information. It solves the complex and diverse problems of device authentication schemes and realizes the credibility and security of devices data sources and devices information storage stability. Finally, the functional analysis confirmed that the scheme is practical and executable.

This thesis analyzes cyclic pursuit with the intent of developing swarm attack strategies for autonomous agents. Research was focused on finding the effects of pursuers capture range, evader speed and size of formation on the probability of escape. The temporal evolution of several polygonal formations was analyzed. The polygons could be regular or arbitrary polygons. The thesis demonstrated that an increased capture range, formation size, reduced evader speed aided capture probability. Irregular n-gon formations reduced to n-1 gon repeatedly, pursuer clusters formed until two clusters remained which eventually came together, so all the n pursuers coalesced until convergence. Regular n-gon polygon formation maintained their form until coalesced. Sufficient conditions for the capture of the evader are provided at the end of the analysis.

As the penetration of renewable energy increases, the mechanical inertia of the power system decreases, weakening the system’s ability to withstand disturbances, particularly during large frequency events. Smart buildings on the demand side show promise as candidates for providing frequency regulation. This paper presents a fast frequency response test for smart buildings. A series of tests, including frequency step tests, frequency ramp tests, and hybrid tests, were conducted to assess the fast frequency response performance of smart buildings. The results indicate that the building has regulation capabilities comparable to traditional generator units in primary frequency control and demonstrates strong potential for fast frequency response. These findings are now being used to guide the development of standards for demand-side adjustable resources participating in fast frequency response.

The transformation of mercury(Hg) in the environment plays a vital role in the cycling of Hg and its risk to the ecosystem and human health. Of particular importance are Hg oxidation/reduction and methylation/demethylation processes driven or mediated by the dynamics of light, microorganisms, and organic carbon, among others. Advances in understanding those Hg transformation processes determine our capacity of projecting and mitigating Hg risk. Here, we provide a critical analysis of major knowledge gaps in our understanding of Hg transformation in nature, with perspectives on approaches moving forward. Our analysis focuses on Hg transformation processes in the environment, as well as emerging methodology in exploring these processes. Future avenues for improving the understanding of Hg transformation processes to protect ecosystem and human health are also explored.

Interactive medical image segmentation methods have become increasingly popular in recent years. These methods combine manual labeling and automatic segmentation, reducing the workload of annotation while maintaining high accuracy. However, most current interactive segmentation frameworks are limited to 2D image data, and are not suitable for 3D image data due to the large size and high complexity of 3D data, as well as the challenges posed by information asymmetry and sparse annotation. In this paper, we propose SliceProp, an interactive segmentation framework that implements slice-wise Label Bidirectional Propagation (LBP) for 3D medical image segmentation. SliceProp extends the interactive 2D image segmentation algorithm to 3D image segmentation, and can handle 3D data with large size and high complexity. Moreover, equipped with a Backtracking Feedback Check (BFC) module, SliceProp effectively addresses the issues of information asymmetry and spatial sparse annotation in 3D medical image segmentation. Additionally, we adopt an uncertainty-based criterion to pri-oritize the slices to be refined interactively, which enhances the efficiency of the interaction process by enabling the model to focus on the regions with the most unreliable predictions. SliceProp is evaluated on two datasets and achieves promising results compared to state-of-the-art methods.

The stress-electric coupling based on receptor functionalization provides a new paradigm for the development of biosensor. However, the gravity factor of sensitive element usually shows difficult to be avoided due to its suppression to biosensor sensitivity. Herein, a magnetic-sensitization biosensing system with multi-physical field coupling of stress, magnetism and electricity was proposed to highly detect biomolecules. The gravitational interference of sensitive membrane was conquered by doping the TbDyFe with magnetostrictive effect into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and applying magnetic field, showing great contributions to magnetic sensitization. The magnetic sensitization of the biosensor was proved by the collaboration of experiment and simulation. The detections of urine protein and urine sugar associated with kidney disease were realized with limits of detection (LOD) of 0.21 ng/mL and 0.45 nM by using the magnetic-sensitization biosensor. The prepared biosensor exhibited the high specificity, selectivity, stability and repeatability. Especially, the HSA and glucose in real samples can be accurately detect, showing good practicability of the prepared biosensor. This study provides a way to improve the sensitivity of the mechanical biosensor. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

On the convergence of step decay step-size for stochastic optimization

The convergence of stochastic gradient descent is highly dependent on the step-size, especially on non-convex problems such as neural network training. Step decay step-size schedules (constant and then cut) are widely used in practice because of their excellent convergence and generalization qualities, but their theoretical properties are not yet well understood. We provide the convergence results for step decay in the non-convex regime, ensuring that the gradient norm vanishes at an (Formula presented) rate. We also provide the convergence guarantees for general (possibly non-smooth) convex problems, ensuring an (Formula presented) convergence rate. Finally, in the strongly convex case, we establish an (Formula presented) rate for smooth problems, which we also prove to be tight, and an (Formula presented) rate without the smoothness assumption. In order to make the control accuracy of macro linear motor reach micron level, this paper presents a combined repetitive control strategy based on the combination of Zero Phase Error Tracking-Feed-Forward (ZPET-FF) controller and the Extended State Observer (ESO).ZPET-FF is feed forward controller, which use the real-time compensation of the controller was performed according to the tracking error of the system, so the influence of parametric variation of the system and the system’s dynamic tracking error could be reduced. While ESO reduces the influences of the uncertainties, suppresses the system noise and improves the anti-interference ability of the system effectively. The experiment shows that the proposed control method not only improves the dynamic tracking performance of the system, but also reduces the tracking error of the system.
