PM₂.₅ Monitoring: Use Information Abundance Measurement and Wide and Deep Learning

This article devises a photograph-based monitoring model to estimate the real-time PM concentrations, overcoming currently popular electrochemical sensor-based PM monitoring methods' shortcomings such as low-density spatial distribution and time delay. Combining the proposed monitoring model, the photographs taken by various camera devices (e.g., surveillance camera, automobile data recorder, and mobile phone) can widely monitor PM concentration in megacities. This is beneficial to offering helpful decision-making information for atmospheric forecast and control, thus reducing the epidemic of COVID-19. To specify, the proposed model fuses Information Abundance measurement and Wide and Deep learning, dubbed as IAWD, for PM monitoring. First, our model extracts two categories of features in a newly proposed DS transform space to measure the information abundance (IA) of a given photograph since the growth of PM concentration decreases its IA. Second, to simultaneously possess the advantages of memorization and generalization, a new wide and deep neural network is devised to learn a nonlinear mapping between the above-mentioned extracted features and the groundtruth PM concentration. Experiments on two recently established datasets totally including more than 100 000 photographs demonstrate the effectiveness of our extracted features and the superiority of our proposed IAWD model as compared to state-of-the-art relevant computing techniques.

Mobile data subsidization launched by network operators is a promising business model to provide some economic insights on the evolving direction of the 4G/5G and beyond mobile data market. The scheme allows content providers to partly subsidize mobile data consumption of mobile users in exchange for displaying a certain amount of advertisements. The users are motivated to access and consume more content without being concerned about overage charges, yielding higher revenue to the data subsidization ecosystem. For each content provider, how to provide appropriate data subsidization (reward) competing with others to earn more revenue and gain higher profit naturally becomes the key concern in such a ecosystem. In this paper, we adopt a hierarchical game approach to model the reward optimization process for the content providers. We formulate an Equilibrium Programs with Equilibrium Constraints (EPEC) problem to characterize the many-to-many interactions among multiple providers and multiple users. Considering the inherent high complexities of the EPEC problem, we propose to utilize the distributed Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) algorithm to obtain the optimum solutions with fast-convergence and decomposition properties of ADMM. © 2020, ICST institute for Computer sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

Integrated carbon and nitrogen management for cost-effective environmental policies in China

Carbon and nitrogen are central elements in global biogeochemical cycles. To effectively manage carbon and nitrogen in China, we developed a comprehensive model for quantifying their fluxes, investigating their interplay across 16 human and natural subsystems. Between 1980 and 2020, nitrogen losses in China increased 2.3-fold and carbon emissions surged 6.5-fold. Integrated carbon and nitrogen management holds the potential for a 74% reduction in nitrogen losses to air and water and a 91% decrease in carbon emissions to the atmosphere by 2060. Compared with separate control of carbon or nitrogen, integrated management delivers an additional reduction of 1.8 million tons of nitrogen and 26.5 million tons of carbon by 2060, bringing out a 37% decrease in unit abatement cost and a net societal benefit of 1384 billion USD.

This paper was initially intended to report on the outcome of the twice postponed demonstration mission of the ARCHES project. Due to the global COVID pandemic, it has been postponed from 2020, then 2021, to 2022. Nevertheless, the development of our concepts and integration has progressed rapidly, and some of the preliminary results are worthwhile to share with the community to drive the dialog on robotics planetary exploration strategies. This paper includes an overview of the planned 4-week campaign, as well as the vision and relevance of the mission towards the planned official space missions. Furthermore, the cooperative aspect of the robotic teams, the scientific motivation, the sub task achievements are summarised. © 2021 International Astronautical Federation, IAF. On background of cooperative air combat, state estimation of aerial maneuvering target with multi-sensor cooperative reconnaissance is discussed in this paper. Multiple moving platforms equipped with different kinds of detectors construct heterogeneous mobile sensor networks. Graph theory is adopted to describe the communication topology of the networks. In consideration of detection range limit, the number of sensors participating in the detection changes over time. An interactive multiple model algorithm (IMM) is utilized for target motion modeling. The local observation information is processed by Cubature Information Filter (CIF). A weighted average consensus-based state estimation method for heterogeneous mobile sensor networks with varying nodes is put forward to fuse information from different sensors and obtain a consistent and precise tracking result. Moreover, the stability analysis of proposed method is provided detailed. Finally, numerical simulation results are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Physical disintegration of macro biochars in natural environments produces nano biochars, thus affecting environmental processes (e.g., adsorption, migration) of antibiotic contaminants. However, understandings about the relationships between adsorption behaviors of antibiotics and unique physicochemical colloidal properties of nano biochar are relatively limited. In this study, a nano biochar (NSD700) was prepared from sawdust-derived biochar (SD700) by a combination method of ball milling, sonication, and centrifugation to contrastively investigate their adsorption for oxytetracycline (OTC). NSD700 had similar chemical structure properties of carbon fraction with SD700, whereas NSD700 possessed greater surface area and better porosity. The maximal sorption capacity of OTC on NSD700 was 30.7 mg/g, 1.95 times greater than that on SD700 (10.4 mg/g), primarily benefiting from more exposed surfaces and pores. OTC adsorption on NSD700 was inhibited under acidic and alkaline condition, and the inhibiting effect was more significant in comparison with that on SD700. OTC sorption onto NSD700 gradually decreased with increasing concentration of Na+, but which was not observed onto SD700. Aggregation kinetic of NSD700 varying with Na+ concentration demonstrated that the inhibiting effect might be affiliated with the destabilization and aggregation of NSD700, which could cause the shield of adsorption sites. This study provided insights for antibiotic adsorption characteristics on nano biochar and will help understanding the process and fate of antibiotics in the biochar-remediated environment. © 2022, The Authors. Two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials have shown fascinating natural ferromagnetic properties at the atomic level, which has great potential in fields of low power spintronics, quantum computing and optical communication. Herein, the ferromagnetism and magnetic anisotropy of bulk Fe3GeTe2 (FGT) were investigated, and the testing results indicate a pronounced vertical magnetic anisotropy below the Curie temperature (Tc=165 K) of FGT. In addition, the anomalous Hall effect of FGT nanoflakes was studied at various temperatures and thicknesses by standard Hall bar device in detail. The results show the anomalous Hall resistance (0.764 Ω at 20 K decreased to 0.332 Ω at 140 K) and the obvious rectangular magnetic hysteresis rings below Tc (165 K). Furthermore, we calculated the carrier concentration (2.5×1022 cm-3 at 20K) and mobility (13.3 cm2/(v·s) at 20K) under large magnetic field (-6 T~6 T). Particularly, we demonstrated that the strong tailoring ability of the anomalous Hall effect for FGT-based magnetoelectric transport devices comes form the regulation of magnetic moment by sample thickness and magnetic field angle. The above experimental results verify that FGT is expected to be a prime candidate material for ultrathin 2D spintronic devices to the next generation. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Simulation test evaluation of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) cluster operational effectiveness requires the support of simulation models with different granularity levels such as precise, medium, and coarse levels. In order to ensure the confidence of the evaluation, difficulties in evaluating the effectiveness of different granularity simulation models of the UAV cluster need to be solved. Aiming at the problem that the existing evaluation methods are not fully applicable due to the constraints of a large number of actual flight data, this paper proposes the evaluation method of different granularity simulation models, completes the rationality analysis of the granularity partitioning of UAV cluster at three levels: precise, medium and coarse, and the rationality analysis of the support relationship between different granularity models. Based on the special input method, capability meta-models of the UAV cluster with different granularity are evaluated. The evaluation method of different granularity simulation models of the UAV cluster based on sensitivity analysis is proposed. The sensitivity factor extraction and simulation analysis of precise granularity in the motion layer, medium granularity in the perception layer, and coarse granularity in the decision layer are completed. The validity evaluation of the different granularity simulation models has laid a solid foundation for the simulation test evaluation of the UAV cluster operational effectiveness. © 2019 IEEE.

Performance evaluation of the natural gas combined cycle with various hydrogen co-firing rates

Hydrogen is a promising carbon-free fuel for reducing CO 2 emissions in power generation and is increasingly being integrated into gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) systems. This study evaluates the thermal performance of a 600-MWe-class GTCC plant under hydrogen co-firing by analyzing two idealized operational scenarios—fixed turbine inlet temperature (TIT) and fixed gas turbine (GT) output—and additionally proposes a load-following strategy that maintains constant total GTCC output. A process simulation model was used to assess the impact of hydrogen blending on GT performance, flue gas composition, and the bottoming cycle—including the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and steam turbine (ST)—under three ambient conditions. Hydrogen co-firing introduced a performance trade-off: GT efficiency improved due to favorable combustion properties, while ST output decreased owing to degraded HRSG heat transfer. Under the fixed TIT scenario, GT efficiency increased with minor reductions in ST output. In contrast, under fixed GT output, TIT and turbine exit temperature (TET) declined, significantly reducing steam temperature and ST output, especially at high hydrogen blending ratios. The greatest performance degradation occurred under the lowest TIT condition. To address this trade-off, an additional scenario was developed by regulating TIT to adjust the GT/ST power split and maintain constant GTCC output. This approach resulted in thermal efficiency gains of up to 0.72 percentage points. The proposed model incorporates radiative and convective heat transfer mechanisms and captures the key thermophysical effects of hydrogen-rich combustion gas, offering practical insights for stable and efficient GTCC operation under hydrogen co-firing conditions.
