Routing algorithms and the hierarchical three-dimensional grid architecture of satellite-based networks (SN) are presented. The performance of the proposed architecture and the routing algorithms are analyzed. Simulation of the routing algorithm based on the extended OPNET platform is performed. It is shown in simulation that the proposed three-dimensional satellite-based network architecture outperforms other SN architectures, and the corresponding routing algorithms have superior performances in simplicity, expandability, robustness and high-speed convergence. The full protocols and the related algorithms of routing and switching for the satellite-based networks then can be proposed and verified on an OPNET platform. © 2003 IEEE.

The aspect integrator platform (AIP) from ABB was designed to build the next generation of industrial automation applications. This platform is part of a set of products that provide the means to model, control and supervise continuous or discrete processes in various market domains, ranging from chemical and metal to paper and consumer industries. Each product works at a different level in the manufacture process, but all of them rely on a common architecture for interoperability. The current AIP architecture provides considerable flexibility in terms of modeling domain information and dynamically modifying it at run-time. This flexibility imposes further requirements on the installation and maintenance of applications because dependencies among its components change dynamically. In this paper, we study the different kind of dependencies that can arise between components and show them in the context of an example from automotive industry. We show how dependency tracking and consistency of domain information can be supported by representing the actual platform concepts in XML due to the structuring and validation properties of XML schemas.

Technical reviews are a cost effective method commonly used to detect software defects early. To exploit their full potential, it is necessary to collect measurement data to constantly monitor and improve the implemented review procedure. This paper postulates a model of the factors that affect the number of defects detected during a technical review, and tests the model empirically using data from a large software development organization. The data set comes from more than 300 specification, design, and code reviews that were performed at Lucent's Product Realization Center for Optical Networking (PRC-ON) in Nuernberg, Germany. Since development projects within PRC-ON usually spend between 12% and 18% of the total development effort on reviews, it is essential to understand the relationships among the factors that determine review success. One major finding of this study is that the number of detected defects is primarily determined by the preparation effort of reviewers rather than the size of the reviewed artifact. In addition, the size of the reviewed artifact has only limited influence on review effort. Furthermore, we identified consistent ceiling effects in the relationship between size and effort with the number of defects detected. These results suggest that managers at PRC-ON must consider adequate preparation effort in their review planning to ensure high quality artifacts as well as a mature review process.

Using front and back information for tight vehicle following maneuvers

During manual driving, most human drivers often use information about the speed and position of the preceding and following vehicles in order to adjust the position and speed of their vehicles. The purpose of this paper is to design an autonomous intelligent cruise control (AICC) which mimics this human driving behavior. The proposed AICC law uses relative speed and spacing information from the preceding and following vehicles in order to choose the proper control action for smooth vehicle following and for maintaining a desired intervehicle spacing specified by the driver. The vehicle stability and platoon stability (in the case of multiple vehicles) in both directions (backward and forward) are guaranteed by the proposed AICC law. Furthermore, platoon stability is guaranteed for a speed-dependent desired spacing (time headway approach) as well as for a constant desired spacing at all speeds.

This paper proposes a method based on constraint programming to realize workflow systems that handle regular and exceptional transactions. In this method, regulations placed on each activity in a workflow task are described as constraints that represent the final data to be generated by that activity. A workflow task is realized by a mechanism in which the agent allocated to each activity keeps data consistent with the constraints set on that activity. Our method provides the following advantages: (1) no programming is needed to manage exceptional transactions, (2) guaranteed consistency among data in a workflow task, and (3) easy maintenance of workflow systems. © 1999 Scripta Technica.

This paper generalizes the load scaling techniques proposed in (Kuo and Mok, 1991) for fixed-priority real-time applications. A framework is proposed to adjust the system workload by relating the criticality and flexibility of a process to the resource allocation problem. A load adjustment procedure based on the approximation algorithm (Ni et al., 1997) is proposed to maximize the system profit in an on-line fashion. When the list of allowable configurations is implicitly given by scalable periodic processes, the corresponding load filtering problem is shown to be NP-complete. We also prove the upper bound of the system profit and provide a mechanism to balance the schedulability and the maximum profit of the system.

Ship design is often multidisciplinary involving several design elements with various types of objectives and constraints (O/C) some easily described as mathematical formulas, others better modeled as descriptive assertions. This paper describes a method based on fuzzy functions and an integrated performance index to model O/C using descriptive assertions to be used with mathematical formulas in optimization. Another issue addressed in this paper concerns the coordination of design elements when sequentially coupled, that is, when one leads the other and the performance of the follower depends greatly on the design of the leader. Based on neuro-fuzzy techniques, the method described here coordinates and optimizes sequentially coupled elements. The two methods are applied to machinery arrangement (MA) and pipe routing (PR). Preliminary models for optimization of MA and PR are described considering convenience, producibility: engine room size, interference and location as factors in the O/C set. Some test results from MA/PR applications are presented and discussed. The methods are generic and can be extended to other elements in ship design. They are mutually independent and may be used separately Two advantages of their use are an improvement in overall performance and a reduction in the need for redesign of elements.

Key issues regarding the operation of the broadband integrated services digital network (BISDN) via satellite are presented herein. The specific issues, challenges, and their resolutions are detailed. In particular, the impact of error characteristics and propagation delay on the operation of BISDN via satellite is discussed. Solutions are presented for removing adverse effects and providing high-quality service to users of BISDN via satellite.

There is a very large demand for basic telephone service in developing nations, and remote parts of industrialized nations, which cannot be met by conventional wireline and cellular systems. This is the world's largest unserved market. We describe a system which uses recent advances in active phased arrays, fast-packet switching technology, adaptive routeing, and light spacecraft technology, in part based on the work of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and on recently-declassified work done on the Strategic Defense Initiative, to make it possible to address this market with a global telephone network based on a large low-Earth-orbit constellation of identical satellites. A telephone utility can use such a network to provide the same modern basic and enhanced telephone services offered by telephone utilities in the urban centres of fully-industrialized nations. Economies of scale permit capital and operating costs per subscriber low enough to provide a service to all subscribers, regardless of location, at prices comparable to the same services in urban areas of industrialized nations, while generating operating profits great enough to attract the capital needed for its construction. The bandwidth needed to support the capacity needed to gain these economies of scale requires that the system use K(alpha)-band frequencies. This choice of frequencies places unusual constraints on the network design, and in particular forces the use of a large number of satellites. Global demand for basic and enhanced telephone service is great enough to support at least three networks of the size described herein. The volume of advanced components, and services such as launch services, required to construct and replace these networks is sufficient to propel certain industries to market leadership positions in the early 21st Century.
