The intensive use of social media through mobile devices has leveraged the development of digital diary applications that keep track of social events as well as geotagged multimedia content. In a large crowd where users with cultural diversity perform spatiotemporal activities, such geotagged multimedia content facilitates users' navigation through points of interest (POI) based on their preferences. This work presents a crowdsourced geo-spatial multimedia data aggregation tool that allows users to develop diary chapters relevant to forthcoming users' spatio-temporal activities. Our proposed solution provides users with the ability to add POIs through an authoring environment with multiple dimensions, such as spatio-temporal filters, multimedia categories, and event types. Specific application domains such as emergency situations, leisure trips, journalism, and tourism can take benefit of this technique. This authoring environment also visualizes geo-spatial multimedia content for collocated points of interest (CPOI) with moving users' timelines. We plan to integrate our proposed authoring environment as a proof of concept into our existing large-scale crowdsourcing environment that is envisioned to support millions of users during the Hajj 2015 event.

Visitors utilize the urban space based on their thermal perception and thermal environment. The thermal adaptation engages the user’s behavioural, physiological and psychological aspects. These aspects play critical roles in user’s ability to assess the thermal environments. Previous studies have rarely addressed the effects of identified factors such as gender, age and locality on outdoor thermal comfort, particularly in hot, dry climate. This study investigated the thermal comfort of visitors at two city squares in Iran based on their demographics as well as the role of thermal environment. Assessing the thermal comfort required taking physical measurement and questionnaire survey. In this study, a non-linear model known as the neural network autoregressive with exogenous input (NN-ARX) was employed. Five indices of physiological equivalent temperature (PET), predicted mean vote (PMV), standard effective temperature (SET), thermal sensation votes (TSVs) and mean radiant temperature (T mrt) were trained and tested using the NN-ARX. Then, the results were compared to the artificial neural network (ANN) and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The findings showed the superiority of the NN-ARX over the ANN and the ANFIS. For the NN-ARX model, the statistical indicators of the root mean square error (RMSE) and the mean absolute error (MAE) were 0.53 and 0.36 for the PET, 1.28 and 0.71 for the PMV, 2.59 and 1.99 for the SET, 0.29 and 0.08 for the TSV and finally 0.19 and 0.04 for the T mrt.

On-chip faster-than-at-speed delay testing provides a promising way for small delay defect detection. However, the frequency of on-chip generated test clock would be impacted by process variations. Hence, it requires determining the actual frequency of generated test clock to ensure the effectiveness of faster-than-at-speed delay testing. In this paper, we present a novel test clock generation scheme, namely Enhanced LCCG, for faster-than-at-speed delay testing. In the proposed scheme, faster-than-at-speed test clock is firstly generated by configuring the corresponding control information specified in the test pattern into Enhanced LCCG. Then, by constructing oscillation paths and counting the corresponding oscillation iteration numbers, the actual frequency of test clock can be measured and calculated with high resolution. Experimental results are presented to validate the proposed method.

Reachability is an important dynamic property of Petri nets. Its determination given an unbounded net and initial marking has remained an open problem since 1960s. Due to its extreme difficulty, a great deal of research has been focused on some subclasses of unbounded nets. For arbitrary ones, this work intends to propose a new reachability tree (NRT), which consists of only but all reachable markings from its initial marking. Furthermore, an NRT-based method to decide deadlocks of unbounded nets is presented. An example is provided to show the new results.

Control of a Quadruped Robot with Bionic Springy Legs in Trotting Gait

Legged robots have better performance on discontinuous terrain than that of wheeled robots. However, the dynamic trotting and balance control of a quadruped robot is still a challenging problem, especially when the robot has multi-joint legs. This paper presents a three-dimensional model of a quadruped robot which has 6 Degrees of Freedom （DOF） on torso and 5 DOF on each leg. On the basis of the Spring-Loaded Inverted Pendulum （SLIP） model, body control algorithm is discussed in the first place to figure out how legs work in 3D trotting. Then, motivated by the principle of joint function separation and introducing certain biological characteristics, two joint coordination approaches are developed to produce the trot and provide balance. The robot reaches the highest speed of 2.0 m.s-1, and keeps balance under 250 Kg.m.s-1 lateral disturbance in the simulations. The effectiveness of these approaches is also verified on a prototype robot which runs to 0.83 m.s-1 on the treadmill, The simulations and experiments show that legged robots have good biological properties, such as the ground reaction force, and spring-like leg behavior.

As users begin to demand applications with superior user experience and high service quality, asymmetric multicore processors are increasingly adopted in embedded systems due to their architectural benefits in improved performance and power savings. While fair-share scheduling is a crucial kernel service for such applications, it is still in an early stage when it comes to performance-asymmetric multicore architecture. In this paper, we propose a new fair-share scheduler by adopting the notion of scaled CPU time which reflects performance asymmetry between different types of cores. Our scheduler can work with kernel's dynamic resource control mechanisms since it makes use of a varying performance ratio between cores and thus captures dynamic performance asymmetry such as a core's changing operating frequency. We develop our approach on top of ARM's big. LITTLE architecture which runs Linaro's scheduling framework. Since Linaro's relies on the completely fair scheduler(CFS) of the Linux kernel and CFS is virtual runtime based, we revise the notion of virtual runtime using the scaled CPU time and incorporate it into the proposed approach. As a result, our approach achieves fair-share scheduling by simply balancing tasks' virtual runtimes. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we have implemented the proposed scheduler and performed a series of experiments on ARM's Versatile Express TC2 board. We ran the SPEC CPU2006 and PARSEC benchmarks for three minutes and measured tasks' virtual runtimes. We observed that the maximum virtual runtime difference was only 0.69 seconds in our approach while the original CFS yielded the maximum difference of 8.35 seconds.

Lab-on-CMOS chips (LOCMOS) are sophisticated miniaturized analysis tools based on integrated circuit (IC) microchips performing various laboratory functions. We have developed a low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) package for a LOCMOS application regarding cytotoxicity assessment of nanomaterials. The LTCC packaged capacitance sensor chip is designed for long-term cell viability monitoring during nanoparticle exposure. The introduced LTCC package utilizes the flip chip bonding technique, and it is biocompatible as well as able to withstand the environmental conditions required to maintain mammalian cell culture directly on the surface of a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuit.

Crowdsourced multimedia data poses several challenges when it is collected, stored, indexed, retrieved, and visualized. Examples of crowd source multimedia data are social sensors, vehicle sensors, physical sensors, human sensors, etc. Analyzing such multimodal and diversified crowdsourced data provides very rich understanding about the need of individuals within a crowd. Such understanding makes it possible to tailor services to individuals' needs, also called context-aware services. In this paper, we propose a spatial multimedia big data framework that can collect multimedia data from 1) a very large crowd equipped with multi-sensory smartphones, 2) vehicles, and 3) social networks. A set of multimedia services are offered to users to support their spatio-temporal activities. These include but not limited to 1) simple user interfaces to utilize multimedia services for instant guidance, 2) navigation to points of interests (POI), and 3) efficient and cost effective intra-city rides to users. The big data framework is designed to handle a very large number of multimedia spatio-temporal queries in real-time. The system is a pilot project and will be deployed during the event of Hajj 2015 when over three million pilgrims from all over the world will visit Makkah, Saudi Arabia to perform their Hajj rituals.
