In order to minimize the conflict miss rate, cache memories can be organized in set-associative manner. The downside of increasing the associativity is increase in the per access energy consumption. In conventional n-way set-associative caches, irrespective of the set-wise demand, each set has n cache ways at its disposal, but cache sets may exhibit non-uniform demand for these cache ways. Exploiting this property, we propose a novel cache architecture, called way sharing cache, wherein by allowing sharing of cache ways among a pair of cache sets, we obtain dynamic energy savings as high as 41% in DL1 cache with negligible performance penalty.

This paper aims to present the design of a cloud computing-based equipment monitoring system (EMS), called CCEMS, for the CNC machine tool industry to illustrate the paradigm shift of EMSs from basing on the Internet to basing on the cloud. In the CCEMS, Graphical User Interface (GUI) plays an important role that allows users to interact with the system for controlling and operating equipment, monitoring equipment performance and statuses, detecting and diagnosing equipment faults, conjecturing production quality and precision of equipment, and so on. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional Web GUIs, this paper proposes a novel Web application implementation framework, called NWAIF, for the CCEMS, by using Service-Oriented architecture (SOA) and Rich Internet Application (RIA) technology. Finally, a paradigm CCEMS for monitoring CNC machine tools is constructed and used to validate the efficacy of the CCEMS and NWAIF. Testing results show that the paradigm CCEMS meets the desired functional requirements and the GUIs created by using the proposed NWAIF is superior to traditional Web-based GUIs in terms of shorter response times to complete the testing operations. © 2012 IEEE.

A method for detecting spikes and slow burst in photic evoked electroencephalogram (EEG) was proposed. The spikes were detected by combining methods of the morphological filter and the similarity coefficient in the time domain. The slow burst was detected by using pole of AR model (auto-regressive model) in the frequency domain. The proposed method was applied for the photic evoked EEG data containing spikes and slow burst, and brought satisfactory coincidence with the results interpreted by a qualified electroencephalographer. © 2012 IEEE.

We propose a generalised diffusion-based file replication scheme for load balancing in unstructured P2P file-sharing networks. The generalised method is derived by replacing the replication probability of a peer used in our previous study with a new expression. In the previous expression, the replication probability is defined to be proportional to the difference between its own load and the average load of its neighbour peers. We show here that the replication probability can instead be expressed as a simple average of one defined to be negatively proportional to its own load and one defined to be proportional to the average load of its neighbour peers. The generalised method (a) includes the above three methods as special cases, (b) can control the trade-off between search and load balancing performances, (c) has a physical analogy to diffusion phenomena, and (d) achieves a good balance in the trade-off differently from our previous method. A new multi-cell joint channel estimation technique for uplink TD-SCDMA system is proposed. The Channel impulse responses of the serving cell and the effective neighboring cell users will process jointly. The new technique adopts the singular value decomposition criterion to reduce the rank order of the system channel matrix. Depending on a limited number of the real parameters that need it to describe the channel matrix, the estimation process will be efficient and the reduced rank technique can significantly improve the channel estimation accuracy. Simulation results show clearly that the proposed reduced rank estimator can significantly improve the channel estimation accuracy for multi-cell networks under rank-deficient consideration. The mean square error (MSE) measure has shown the validity performance of the proposed estimator over the conventional estimators. In addition, the correlation coefficient measures of the reduced rank estimators have shown slightly the superiority of the proposed technique.

Whenever internet connection is used in wireless devices like mobile phones, all the communication from mobile device to web server pass through the gateway. Two security protocols are used in between the wireless device and web server. one protocol named WTLS is used between the wireless device and gateway and other protocol named TLS is used between the gateway and web server. When two protocols are used in between the wireless device and web server then there is a problem of providing end to end security. Most of the research paper discuss about the wireless transport layer security for wireless device and transport layer security for wired device. This research paper suggested a Common security Protocol for wireless device and wired device. Instead of two different security protocols like WTLS and TLS, a common security protocol would be used in between the gateway. In this paper the architecture of common security protocol (CSP) is discussed. This paper focuses on comparative study of various security algorithms used for wireless device and wired device. On the basis of comparative analysis of both security protocols, algorithm would be designed for common security protocol. This algorithm for CSP would work in such way so that end to end security would be improved from wireless device to wired server.

Concurrent trace is an emerging challenge when debugging multicore systems. In concurrent trace, trace buffer becomes a bottleneck since all trace sources try to access it simultaneously. In addition, the on-chip interconnection fabric is extremely high hardware cost for the distributed trace signals. In this paper, we propose a clustering-based scheme which implements concurrent trace for debugging Network-on-Chip (NoC) based multicore systems. In the proposed scheme, a unified communication framework eliminates the requirement for interconnection fabric which is only used during debugging. With clustering scheme, multiple concurrent trace sources can access distributed trace buffer via NoC under bandwidth constraint. We evaluate the proposed scheme using Booksim and the results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

3D virtual reality, including the current generation of multi-user virtual worlds, has had a long history of use in education and training, and it experienced a surge of renewed interest with the advent of Second Life in 2003. What followed shortly after were several years marked by considerable hype around the use of virtual worlds for teaching, learning and research in higher education. For the moment, uptake of the technology seems to have plateaued, with academics either maintaining the status quo and continuing to use virtual worlds as they have previously done or choosing to opt out altogether. This paper presents a brief review of the use of virtual worlds in the Australian and New Zealand higher education sector in the past and reports on its use in the sector at the present time, based on input from members of the Australian and New Zealand Virtual Worlds Working Group. It then adopts a forward-looking perspective amid the current climate of uncertainty, musing on future directions and offering suggestions for potential new applications in light of recent technological developments and innovations in the area. © 2013 Sue Gregory.

It is often discussed that the fourth methodology for science research is "informatics". The first methodology is a theoretic approach, the second one is observation and/or experiment, and the third one is computer simulation. Informatics is a new methodology for data intensive science, which is a new concept based on the fact that most scientific data are digitalized and the amount of data is huge. The facilities to support informatics are cloud systems. Herein we propose a cloud system especially designed for science. The basic concepts, design, resources, implementation, and applications of the NICT science cloud are discussed.
