Agent-based evacuation modeling approach is gained more and more attention for investigating human cognitive capabilities and social behaviors in building fires. This paper mainly overviews the research about various agent-based evacuation models. For the decision-making reflects the intelligence of agent individual, we define three types of behavior decision-making models for agent individual based on the collected literatures and sum up the characteristics of each type. Aiming at crowd' important influence on evacuation processes, we also sum up two types of agent-based crowd modeling approaches to simulate crowd evacuation processes and give corresponding cases. Finally, after summing up the existing problems, the outlooks of the research from computational experiments point of view is proposed.

Nearly 80% of worldwide trade (over US $620 billion) is carried by marine transport. Unfortunately, manually identifying, tracking, and monitoring containers involves a great many logistical problems. The security of container transportation has also become an issue of critical importance, with regard to theft, tracking, tracing, and national security. This paper describes the passive radio frequency identification (RFID) electronic seal (e-seal) monitoring system that was implemented using existing low-cost passive RFID e-seals devices to replace the manual escorts. The system successfully overcame the harsh outdoor environment of Kaohsiung Port, including resistance to high temperature, high salinity, humidity, and typhoons. The system comprises a reader, an e-seal (tag), and an antenna, and its optimal installation architecture is being disclosed in this paper. The reading rate not only has been maintained at levels above 97.4% when a container truck travel passes an RFID reader at a speed of up to 60 kilometers per hour in 0.2 seconds, the system has also maintained normal operation 24 hours a day, year round. The system has moved beyond the testing phase or small-scale pilot project bringing RFID technology to practical operations of large-scale logistics systems. The architecture, procedures, methodologies, and experience involved in the development of this system, deserve consideration as a guide for the future introduction of RFID systems, and can relieve operators from the expensive, time-consuming trial and error involved in the introduction of passive RFID e-seal systems in the container transport industry.

In this paper, we present a proxy-based solution for adapting the scalable video streams at the edge of a wireless network, which can respond quickly to highly dynamic wireless links. Our design adopts the scalable video coding (SVC) technique for lightweight rate adaptation at the edge. We derive a QoE model, i.e., rate-quality tradeoff model, that relates the maximum subjective quality under a given rate by choosing the optimal frame rate and quantization stepsize. The proxy iteratively allocates rates of different video streams to maximize a weighted sum of video qualities associated with different streams, based on the periodically observed link throughputs and the sending buffer status. Simulation studies show that our scheme consistently outperforms TFRC in terms of agility to track link qualities and overall quality of all streams. In addition, the proposed scheme supports differential services for different streams, and competes fairly with TCP flows.

The importance of video surveillance applications has been increasing with the increase of crime and terrorism. In addition to traditional video cameras, the use of acoustic sensors in surveillance and monitoring applications is also becoming increasingly important. In this paper, we apply High-Order Local Auto-Correlation (HLAC), which has succeeded in video surveillance applications, to extract features from acoustic signals in order to construct an acoustic surveillance system based on a novelty detection approach. We also apply Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) to this problem. Experiment results confirmed that the AHLAC-based method outperforms the NMF-based and the cepstrum-based methods under all SNR conditions. The combined NMF-AHLAC method was able to improve the Equal Error Rate (EER) at lower SNRs, although the EERs at higher SNRs tend to degrade.

In wireless mesh networks (WMN), most routing algorithms apply broadcasting at some stage of the path discovery process. They thereby consume large chunks of the network throughput. Intelligent rebroadcast algorithms aim to reduce this overhead by calculating the usefulness of a rebroadcast and the likelihood of collisions. Unfortunately, this introduces latency and breaks the rebroadcast chain, resulting in reduced reachability. In this paper we present our Social-aware Routing Protocol with Parallel Collision Guidance Broadcasting for WMN (SCG). It reduces rebroadcasting without a loss in reachability and without a significant increase in latency. Our claims are validated through simulations comparing our algorithm with existing protocols.
