ISS (Instruction Set Simulator) plays an important role in pre-silicon software development for ASIP. However, the speed of traditional simulation is too slow to effectively support full-scale software development. In this paper, we propose a hybrid simulation framework which further improves the previous simulation methods by aggressively utilizing the host machine resources. The utilization is achieved by categorizing instructions of ASIP application into two types, namely custom and basic instructions, via binary instrumentation. Then in a way of hybrid simulation, only custom instructions are simulated on the ISS and basic instructions are executed fast and natively on the host machine. We implement this framework for an industrial ASIP to validate our approach. Experimental results show that when the implemented ISS, namely GS-Sim, is applied to practical multimedia decoders, an average simulation speed up to 1058.5MIPS can be achieved, which is 34.7 times of the state-of-art dynamic binary translation simulator and is the fastest to the best of our knowledge. © 2011 IEEE.

A forest fire has long been a severe threat to the forest resources and human life. The threat could effectively be mitigated by timely and accurate detection. In this paper, we propose a novel accurate forest fire detection system using Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In the proposed system, the detection accuracy is increased by applying the multi-criteria detection that an alarm decision depends on multiple attributes of a forest fire. The multi-criteria detection is implemented by the artificial neural network which fuses sensing data corresponding to multiple attributes of a forest fire into an alarm decision. Due to the utilization of the artificial neural network, the proposed system enjoys low overhead and the self-learning capability. Furthermore, we have developed a prototype consisting TelosB sensor nodes and carried out extensive experiments to study the performance of the proposed system. We have also developed a solar battery in order to persistently power the unattended sensor node deployed in the forest. © 2011 IEEE.

Bayesian serial revision method for RLLC cluster systems failure prediction

Failure prediction plays an important role for many tasks such as optimal resource management in large-scale system. However, accurately failure number prediction of repairable large-scale long-running computing （RLLC） is a challenge because of the reparability and large-scale. To address the challenge, a general Bayesian serial revision prediction method based on Bootstrap approach and moving average approach is put forward, which can make an accurately prediction for the failure number. To demonstrate the performance gains of our method, extensive experiments on the data of Los Alamos National Laboratory （LANL） cluster is implemented, which is a typical RLLC system. And experimental results show that the prediction accuracy of our method is 80.2 %, and it is a greatly improvement with 4 % compared with some typical methods. Finally, the managerial implications of the models are discussed.

computer science students must be able to support the global software development phenomena;therefore they should enhance their teamwork, communication, negotiation, leadership and collaboration skills. It pushes the educational institutions to rethink the way in which they are transferring the soft skills, e.g. collaboration capabilities, to the new software engineers. Advances in developing platforms, wideband communications, global markets, technological trends and outsourcing promote the conception of a global software engineering. Trying to help address this issue, this paper describes the results of two experiences where a CODILA (Collaborative and Distributed Learning Activity) was used to solve a software engineering problem in a distributed way. These experiences involved students and instructors of eight Latin American universities. We have measured the development of collaboration skills and satisfaction level of computer science students participating in these distributed collaborative practices, and the obtained results are highly encouraging. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are widely used in reliability-critical systems due to their reconfiguration ability. However, with the shrinking device feature size and increasing die area, nowadays FPGAs can be deeply affected by the errors induced by electromigration and radiation. To improve the reliability of FPGA-based reconfigurable systems, a permanent fault recovery approach using a domain partition model is proposed in this paper. In the proposed approach, the fault-tolerant FPGA recovery from faults is realized by reloading a proper configuration from a pool of multiple alternative configurations with overlaps. The overlaps are presented as a set of vectors in the domain partition model. To enhance the reliability, a technical procedure is also presented in which the set of vectors are heuristically filtered so that the corresponding small overlaps can be merged into big ones. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach through applying it to several benchmark circuits. Compared with previous approaches, the proposed approach increased MTTF by up to 18.87%. Copyright © 2011 The institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.

Conventional fuzzy logic controller is applicable when there are only two fuzzy inputs with usually one output. Complexity increases when there are more than one inputs and outputs making the system unrealizable. The ordinal structure model of fuzzy reasoning has an advantage of managing high-dimensional problem with multiple input and output variables ensuring the interpretability of the rule set. This is achieved by giving an associated weight to each rule in the defuzzification process. In this work, a methodology to design an ordinal fuzzy logic controller with application for obstacle avoidance of Khepera mobile robot is presented. The implementation will show that ordinal structure fuzzy is easier to design with highly interpretable rules compared to conventional fuzzy controller. In order to achieve high accuracy, a specially tailored Genetic Algorithm (GA) approach for reinforcement learning has been proposed to optimize the ordinal structure fuzzy controller. Simulation results demonstrated improved obstacle avoidance performance in comparison with conventional fuzzy controllers. Comparison of direct and incremental GA for optimization of the controller is also presented. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Teaching and learning software engineering have been recognized as important challenges for computer science students and instructors. These challenges become stronger if we consider the distributed software development scenario that is gaining space everyday into the software industry. In order to help address this challenge, this article introduces a Collaborative and Distributed Learning Activity (CODILA). This collaborative activity helps students to reach the professional skills required in the professional work, and instructors to perform such transfer process. The paper also presents and discusses the obtained results from a particular CODILA, which address the challenge of designing a software architecture of a communication infrastructure in a distributed way. Six Latin American universities participated in the activity. The obtained results were satisfactory and indicate these types of experiences can be used to address the stated challenges. © 2011 IEEE.

Confusion, frustration and anxiety are caused by the ineffective communication in healthcare system. Patients and family members usually have a hard time to acquire necessary information in hospitals. The healthcare literacy, a wide range of patient-age population, and the text-only teaching sheets are important factors to block the communication. Therefore, the proposed work presents an innovative information board that is designed specifically for current pediatric healthcare environment to deliver messages more effectively through a fun and interactive approach. The I See! system carries four goals: Inform, Set expectation, Educate and Ease Anxiety (I.S.E.E). The innovative I See! system achieves these goals through categories, such as introduction video clip, interactive games, key words section and parents' place. Using different sections in the module, patients and families can engage more effectively in medical procedures. The distinguishing features in I See! module are Age-Adaptable, Audio-Visual, Multi-Lingual, Multi-Sensory, Interactive and Procedural. In addition, this module is a mobile, touch-screen and web-based appliance to prepare patients and families well to take the examinations in hospitals. Lastly, this work also discusses how the information in healthcare system could be delivered to patients and families more efficiently. © 2011 IEEE.

An energy-efficient scheduling approach based on private clouds

With further development and wide acceptance of cloud computing, lots of companies and colleges decide to take advantage of it in their own data centers, which is known as private clouds. Since private clouds have some unique characteristics and special requirements, it is still a challenging problem to effectively schedule virtual machine requests onto compute nodes, especially with multiple objectives to meet. In this paper, we explore couples of characteristics related to workflow scheduling in the scenario of private clouds and propose a hybrid energy-efficient scheduling approach. The experiments show that it can save more time for users, conserve more energy and achieve higher level of load balancing. Copyright © 2011 Binary Information Press.

In contrast with public clouds, private clouds have some unique features, especially when related to workflow scheduling. Of course, the tradeoff problem between power and performance remains to be one of the key concerns. Based on our previous research, in this paper, we propose a hybrid energy-efficient scheduling algorithm using dynamic migration. The experiments show that it can not only reduce the response time, conserve more energy, but also achieve higher level of load balancing.
