The MADNESS project aims at the definition of innovative system-level design methodologies for embedded MP-SoCs, extending the classic concept of design space exploration in multi-application domains to cope with high heterogeneity, technology scaling and system reliability. The main goal of the project is to provide a framework able to guide designers and researchers to the optimal composition of embedded MPSoC architectures, according to the requirements and the features of a given target application field. The proposed approach will tackle the new challenges, related to both architecture and design methodologies, arising with the technology scaling, the system reliability and the ever-growing computational needs of modern applications. The methodologies proposed with this project act at different levels of the design flow, enhancing the state-of-the art with novel features in system-level synthesis, architectural evaluation and prototyping. Support for fault resilience and efficient adaptive runtime management is introduced at hardware and middleware level, and considered by the system-level synthesis as one of the optimization factors to be taken into account. This paper presents the first stable results obtained in the MADNESS project, already demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed methods. © 2011 IEEE.

Forest ecosystems play a critical role in the cycles of carbon and water from local to global scales. These cycles and their variability, in turn, play an important role in the non-trivial emergent and self-organizing interactions between forest ecosystems and their environment. Observational evidence, based on micrometeorological eddy covariance measurements, suggests that heterogeneity and disturbance (both human and natural) in forest ecosystems in monsoon East Asia may facilitate to build resilience for adaptation to change. Yet, the principles that characterize the role of variability in these interactions remain elusive. A process network is defined as a network of feedback loops and the related time scales, which describe the magnitude and direction of the flow of energy, matter, and information between the different variables in a complex system. We attempt to delineate and interpret such process networks by analyzing multivariate ecohydrologic and biogeochemical time series data based on information flow statistics. © 2011 ECAL 2011: The 11th European Conference on Artificial Life. Web workloads are known to vary dynamically with time which poses a challenge to resource allocation among the applications. In this paper, we argue that the existing dynamic resource allocation based on resource utilization has some drawbacks in virtualized servers. Dynamic resource allocation directly based on real-time user experience is more reasonable and also has practical significance. To address the problem, we propose a system architecture that combines real time measurements and analysis of user experience for resource allocation. We evaluate our proposal using Webbench. The experiment results show that these techniques can judiciously allocate system resources.

Confusion, frustration and anxiety are caused by the ineffective communication in healthcare system. Patients and family members usually have a hard time to acquire necessary information in hospitals. The healthcare literacy, a wide range of patient-age population, and the text-only teaching sheets are important factors to block the communication. Therefore, the proposed work presents an innovative information board that is designed specifically for current pediatric healthcare environment to deliver messages more effectively through a fun and interactive approach. The I See! system carries four goals: Inform, Set expectation, Educate and Ease Anxiety (I.S.E.E). The innovative I See! system achieves these goals through categories, such as introduction video clip, interactive games, key words section and parents' place. Using different sections in the module, patients and families can engage more effectively in medical procedures. The distinguishing features in I See! module are Age-Adaptable, Audio-Visual, Multi-Lingual, Multi-Sensory, Interactive and Procedural. In addition, this module is a mobile, touch-screen and web-based appliance to prepare patients and families well to take the examinations in hospitals. Lastly, this work also discusses how the information in healthcare system could be delivered to patients and families more efficiently.

Implementing a passive RFID e-seal system for transit container security: A case study of Kaohsiung Port

Nearly 80 % of worldwide trade (over US $620 billion) is carried by marine transport. Unfortunately, manually identifying, tracking, and monitoring containers involves a great many logistical problems. The security of container transportation has also become an issue of critical importance, with regard to theft, tracking, tracing, and national security. This paper describes the passive radio frequency identification (RFID) electronic seal (e-seal) monitoring system that was implemented using existing low-cost passive RFID e-seals devices to replace the manual escorts. The system successfully overcame the harsh outdoor environment of Kaohsiung Port, including resistance to high temperature, high salinity, humidity, and typhoons. The system comprises a reader, an e-seal (tag), and an antenna, and its optimal installation architecture is being disclosed in this paper. The reading rate not only has been maintained at levels above 97.4 % when a container truck travel passes an RFID reader at a speed of up to 60 kilometers per hour in 0.2 seconds, the system has also maintained normal operation 24 hours a day, year round. The system has moved beyond the testing phase or small-scale pilot project bringing RFID technology to practical operations of large-scale logistics systems. The architecture, procedures, methodologies, and experience involved in the development of this system, deserve consideration as a guide for the future introduction of RFID systems, and can relieve operators from the expensive, time-consuming trial and error involved in the introduction of passive RFID e-seal systems in the container transport industry.

This paper further investigates the dynamical properties of a class of basic biochemical networks modules - single substrate and single product with no inhibition (SSN) module. It is well known that the biological networks can be modelled by using different kinetics according to their reaction types. This paper introduces the SSN model under the law of mass action and proves that it can admit uniquely globally asymptotically stable positive equilibrium. Moreover, we prove that the SSN module under Hill kinetics can admit uniquely asymptotically stable positive equilibrium. It indicates some potential applications in the understanding of some biological networks modules and the design of some specific network controllers.

Sensor placement for activity recognition: Comparing video data with motion sensor data

The development of ubiquitous sensing strategies in home environments underpins the promise of adaptive architectural design, assistive robotics, and services which would support a person's ability to live independently as they age. In particular, the ability to infer the actions and behavioral patterns of an individual from sensor data is key to effective design of such components for aging in place. Frequently, activity recognition is accomplished using vision based sensors. The method employed in this paper makes use of self similarities in a video motion sequence to construct a descriptor of the activity in the form of a Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG). Descriptors are used as exemplars for classification and are shown to accurately identify motion video recorded from other views. Three candidate motions were performed using a PUMA robot (for repeatability). Video of each motion was recorded from an array of vantage points on the surface of a virtual sphere surrounding the workspace of the robot. This method is then extended to non-video motion sensor data collected from the same set of points. Results show that mean HOGs generated from Self Similarity Matrices may serve as effective exemplars to classify motions in both video and non-video formats. Video data provides superior classification results. However, motion sensor data offers a less intrusive option with promising accuracy especially when multiple sensors outputs are fused to form aggregate readings.

Web services is a popular distributed systems technology and its effectiveness and efficiency rely badly on the underlying protocols. And web service protocols are designed in XML formats so the message structures within are quite different from the conventional ones. Therefore, the well-established formal verification techniques for conventional protocols, which have gained substantial achievements in practice, cannot be applied directly to them because of the inherently different syntax. In this paper, we propose a justification-oriented and automatic formal approach to verify, in the standard Dolev-Yao model, concerned security properties expressed as epistemic notions, i. e., logic of knowledge, for web service protocols, based on a fault-preserving mapping tool called SuD (SOAP under Dolev-Yao). Our approach is significant because, instead of finding flaws in finite number of protocol sessions, the specifications we are to verify can hold in arbitrary number of sessions. © 2011 Binary Information Press.

With Distributed Vision Networks, drawbacks of common video surveillance systems can be overcome. Apart from an increase in system scalability and reliability, operators of Distributed Vision Networks benefit from real-time scene analysis. In case serious incidents are detected by cameras, humans can be informed to take appropriate further action. In this paper, we propose the use of mobile terminals that can connect to wireless networked Smart Cameras. Thereby, search requests (containing image features) can be posed by users and notifications in case of alarms (i.e., the detection of previously published image features) can be sent by cameras. The underlying algorithms and their evaluation, both in a simulated and real-world environment, are presented in this paper. The notification of a guard in our testbed of five cameras took below three seconds. An extensive evaluation shows, that distributed alarm management is generally feasible in today's wireless networks.

Due to advancements in lighting technologies new opportunities for application emerge. In this paper an interdisciplinary study towards the development of adaptive lighting environments is presented. An implementation of an adaptive lighting environment is made in the domain of office work. For evaluation, experts from the domains of human-system interaction, activity and context recognition, and system architecture design are interviewed. Contributions are made with regard to the implementation of the adaptive lighting in office environments and an evaluation method that is in line with the interdisciplinary approach. From the evaluation method insights in the fields of human-computer interaction, activity and context recognition and system architecture and (wireless) networking and in topics that span across these fields are gained.
