Thread migration is an effective technique for fault resilience and load balancing in high performance computing. However, flexible thread migration is not easy to achieve. In this paper, we present an approach to creating migratory threads dynamically at application level. The targets must be executable source files. Compared to the static ones, the number of threads created during migration with the new scheme is independent from the context. Various thread cases are considered for migration. Thread state is handled at application level. Variables are saved in structures in C language for speedy state construction. In order to solve the inability of traditional methods in tracking the created threads, a tree of active function calls is used to record the callback. The preprocessor of the proposed one is written in YACC for accuracy and programmability. The migration enabling process is transparent to programmers with the help of the preprocess. The experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach.

In this paper, we model the problem of bandwidth allocation for a broadband satellite communication system using a two level market-based game. Specifically, we consider that a number of satellite operators sell bandwidth to a certain number of users in order to maximize their profit. Simultaneously, the users choose from which satellite to buy the requested bandwidth trying to maximize their efficiency. Therefore, the initial problem of bandwidth allocation is modeled as a multiple buyer-multiple seller game where the satellites represent the sellers and the users represent the buyers of the game.

Resizable caches can trade-off capacity for access speed to dynamically match the needs of the workload. In Simultaneous Multi-Threaded (SMT) cores, the caching needs can vary greatly across the number of threads and their characteristics, offering opportunities to dynamically adjust cache resources to the workload. In this paper we propose the use of resizable caches in order to improve the performance of SMT cores, and introduce a new control algorithm that provides good results independent of the number of running threads. In workloads with a single thread, the resizable cache control algorithm should optimize for cache miss behavior because misses typically form the critical path. In contrast, with several independent threads running, we show that optimizing for cache hit behavior has more impact, since large SMT workloads have other threads to run during a cache miss. Moreover, we demonstrate that these seemingly diametrically opposed policies can be simultaneously satisfied by using the harmonic mean of the per-thread speedups as the metric to evaluate the system performance, and to smoothly and naturally adjust to the degree of multithreading.

In this paper, we provide a generalized file replication scheme with a storage load balancing function in unstructured P2P file-sharing networks. The generalized file replication scheme is expressed as a weighted mixture of the concepts introduced in existing schemes. A mathematical analysis shows that the system behavior realized by the generalized file replication scheme can be described by a thermal diffusion equation composed of heat, reaction and diffusion terms, the weights of which are controlled by a parameter of the mixing rate. Here, the heat term represents a function to enhance file search performance by making replicas on specific peers. The reaction term represents a function to avoid concentrations of storage loads on specific peers. The diffusion term represents a function to uniform the storage loads among peers. The simulation results show that the generalized file replication scheme enables us to control the trade-off between search and storage load balancing performances extensively and intuitively by controlling the parameter of the mixing rate. In addition, the simulation results show that the generalized file replication scheme can adapt to dynamic P2P file-sharing environments.

In this paper we present our work and results in the framework of obstacle avoiding for marine vehicle teams by means of trajectory planning. Based on a team of maritime systems, such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) or Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs), which are intended to perform a preplanned mission in a given formation topology, methods for trajectory planning are investigated which guarantee for both obstacle-free paths and formation preservation. The proposed solution contains advanced graph search and trajectory smoothing to generate executable path for the vehicles.

The project of E-Simulator is under way at Hyogo Earthquake engineering Research Center (E-Defense) of National Research institute of Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED), Japan, which facilitates the world's largest shaking table. The E-Simulator uses the parallel finite element (FE) analysis software package called ADVENTYRECluster (ADVC) as a platform. In this study, we report the results of high-precision FE-analysis for simulation of collapse behavior of the 4-story steel building frame that is the specimen of the full-scale total collapse shaking-table test conducted in September 2007 at E-Defense. It is shown that elastoplastic dynamic responses can be estimated with good accuracy using a high-precision FE-analysis without resort to macro models such as plastic hinge and composite beam effect.

At-speed scan testing for intra-clock and inter-clock transition delay faults in a SOC design with multiple clock domains is an important and challenging issue. Current practice in industry usually applies a test scheme targeted on intra-clock transition fault delay testing (i.e., intra testing). In this paper a test scheme targeting both intra-clock and inter-clock domains for transition delay fault testing (i.e., intra-inter testing) is applied. This paper presents an empirical study by comparing between intra testing and intra-inter testing in terms of fault classification, test detection, test coverage, test volume, and test power by using industrial circuits. The information provided by this paper is beneficial to both practitioners and researchers in their pursuit of improving the quality of transition delay testing, which is critical to the quality of deep-sub micron VLSI chips.

"Virtual Coach" refers to a coaching program or device aiming to guide users through tasks for the purpose of prompting positive behavior or assisting with learning new skills. This article reviews virtual coach interventions with the purpose of guiding rehabilitation professionals to comprehend more effectively the essential components of such interventions, the underlying technologies and their integration, and example applications. A design space of virtual coach interventions including self-monitoring, context awareness, interface modality, and coaching strategies were identified and discussed to address when, how, and what coaching messages to deliver in an automated and intelligent way. Example applications that address various health-related issues also are provided to illustrate how a virtual coach intervention is developed and evaluated. Finally, the article provides some insight into addressing key challenges and opportunities in designing and implementing virtual coach interventions. It is expected that more virtual coach interventions will be developed in the field of rehabilitation to support self-care and prevent secondary conditions in individuals with disabilities. © 2010 Elsevier Inc.

The InterMedia project aims at progressing towards user-centric convergence of multimedia, by putting the user at the center of services (multimedia applications), devices and interfaces for the interaction. One of the main implications of the user-centric approach is the seamless and secure access to content, regardless of the users' location and terminal device(s), which requires suitable solutions to manage mobility, context-awareness and digital rights. Under this respect this paper reviews the mechanisms developed within InterMedia to support the above issues, and discusses their integration in a common networking framework addressing a generic scenario for content access.

Numerical analysis of four-wave-mixing based multichannel wavelength conversion techniques in fibers

We numerically investigate four-wave-mixing （FWM） based multichannel wavelength conversion for amplitude-modulated signals, phase-modulated signals, together with mixed amplitude and phase modulated signals. This paper also discusses the influence of stimulated Brillouin scattering （SBS） effects on high-efficiency FWM-based wavelength conversion applications. Our simulation results show that DPSK signals are more suitable for FWM-based multichannel wavelength conversion because the OOK signals will suffer from the inevitable data- pattern-dependent pump depletion. In future applications, when the modulation format is partially upgraded from OOK to DPSK, the influence of OOK signals on the updated DPSK signals must be considered when using multi-channel wavelength conversion. This influence becomes severe with the increase of OOK channel number. It can be concluded that DPSK signals are more appropriate for both transmission and multichannel wavelength conversion, especially in long haul and high bit-rate system.
