In this paper we present a study on the requirements for the design and implementation of simulation packages for Grid systems. Grids are emerging as new distributed computing systems whose main objective is to manage and allocate geographically distributed computing resources to applications and users in an efficient and transparent manner. Grid systems are at present very difficult and complex to use for experimental studies of large-scale distributed applications. Although the field of simulation of distributed computing systems is mature, recent developments in large-scale distributed systems are raising needs not present in the simulation of the traditional distributed systems. Motivated by this, we present in this work a set of basic requirements that any simulation package for Grid computing should offer. This set of functionalities is obtained after a careful review of most important existing Grid simulation packages and includes new requirements not considered in such simulation packages. Based on the identified set of requirements, a Grid simulator is developed and exemplified for the Grid scheduling problem.

He is the associate editor of Asian Journal of Control member of TC on variable structure systems and sliding mode control of IEEE Control Systems Society and a senior member of IEEE. He has produced more than 90 peer-refereed journal papers near 160 technical papers in conference proceedings and authored/edited 4 books. The WATERS Network (WATer and Environmental Research systems Network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS Network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS Network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. Virtual rooms and common information spaces are being used more and more frequently. In addition to internet-based solutions, ad-hoc InfoSpaces have been proposed. Their security has not been sufficiently investigated. This paper proposes a new protocol for peer-to-peer data exchange with support for access control for operations in the virtual rooms. Access rights for operations are kept in access control matrices and the security layer allows only operations from clients which are marked as allowed in the access control matrix. The protocol is based on the idea of hiding the identity of all peer-to-peer participants. Thus this protocol offers anonymity and full peer-to-peer support using asymmetric cryptography to distribute the access control matrices. This works without any central authority.

Emergence can be defined as the formation of order from disorder based on self-organization. Humans -by looking at a self-organizing system - can decide intuitively whether emergence was taking place or not. To build self-organizing technical systems we need to automate the recognition of emergent behavior. In this paper we try to give a quantitative and practically usable definition of emergence. The presented theoretical approach is applied to an experimental environment, which shows emergent behavior. An observer/controller architecture with emergence-detectors is introduced. The proposed definition of emergence is discussed in comparison with Shannon's information theoretical approach

Web Service technologies offer a successful way for interoperability among applications. However, although current approaches are beginning to address how to specify non-functional capabilities in Web Services at description level, they have so far failed to propose an acceptable method to decouple the named capabilities from Web Service implementations, resulting in a large amount of code scattered and tangled all over the application. Considering it is our desire to minimize middleware participation in nonfunctional properties management, it is the aim of this paper to describe how aspect-oriented techniques can be used in conjunction with WS-Policy in order to allow the mentioned properties to be completely decoupled at description and implementation level, thus improving their reusability and service maintenance and evolution. © 2006 IEEE.

E-health is closely related with networks and telecommunications when dealing with applications of collecting or transferring medical data from distant locations for performing remote medical collaborations and diagnosis. In this book we provide an overview of the fields of image and signal processing for networked and distributed e-health applications and their supporting technologies. The book is structured in 10 chapters, starting the discussion from the lower end, that of acquisition and processing of biosignals and medical images and ending in complex virtual reality systems and techniques providing more intuitive interaction in a networked medical environment. The book also discusses networked clinical decision support systems and corresponding medical standards, WWW-based applications, medical collaborative platforms, wireless networking, and the concepts of ambient intelligence and pervasive computing in electronic healthcare systems.

Address Space Randomization (ASR) techniques randomize process layout to prevent attackers from locating target functions. Prior ASR techniques have considered singletarget attacks, which succeed if the attacker can locate a single, powerful system library function. These techniques are not sufficient to defend against chained return-into-lib(c) attacks, each of which calls a sequence of system library functions in order. In this paper, we propose a new ASR technique, code islands, that randomizes not only the base pointers of memory mapping (mmapping), but also relative distances between functions, maximally and dynamically. Our technique can minimize the utility of information gained in early probes of a chained return-into-lib(c) attack, for later stages of that attack. With a pre-defined rerandomization threshold, our code islands technique not only is exponentially more effective than any prior ASR technique in defending against brute-force searches for locations of multiple targets-a key component of chained return-into-lib(c) attacks, but can also maintain high service availability even under attack. Our overhead measurement on some wellknown GNU applications shows that it takes less than 0.05 second to load/rerandomize a process with the necessary C system library functions using code islands, and our technique introduces a 3-10% run-time overhead from interisland control transfers. We conclude that the code island technique is well-suited to dedicated multi-threaded servers. Copyright 2006 ACM.

This paper describes a simple system that can be used for autonomous demand-side management in a load site such as a home or commercial facility. The system identifies the operation of individual loads using transient patterns observed in the voltage waveform measured at an electric service outlet. The theoretical foundation of the measurement process is introduced, and a preprocessor that computes short-time estimates of the spectral content of the voltage waveform is described. The paper presents several example measurements demonstrating the ability of the system to obtain estimates of the spectral content of the voltage waveform. © 2006 IEEE.
