A method for the identification of a freeway macroscopic model is presented. The model is based on the idea of dividing a freeway trunk in sections covered by the cells of the wireless network and associated with state variables describing density of vehicles, mean velocity, and percentage of active mobile phones. Using the density and hand-off measurements from the cellular network, the parameters of such model are identified via an algorithm based on stochastic approximation. Successful simulation results are reported and discussed

A scheme was obtained using synthesis of Petri nets sharing a kind of subnet, according to process of several enterprises sharing a plant to produce some product. First, the Petri net model of single enterprise in sharing a plant to produce some product was set up. Second, the global Petri net model was obtained through using shared subnet synthesis method. Using the global Petri net model people can actualize synchronization and save resources. Several conditions were proposed for the synthesis net of free choice nets (FC) {asymmetric choice nets (AC)} is a FC net {AC net}. Some conditions of the structural liveness preservation by the shared subnet synthesis of Petri nets were obtained. These results are useful for studying the properties of Petri synthesis nets and establishing models for large complex system.

3D models are a new kind of cross-media resource which can be frequently seen in the network. Since the amount of them is very huge now, content-based retrieval can help to recognize a certain object or retrieve similar ones from the giant database. This paper presents a new method for deriving 3D moment invariants and uses them as shape descriptors for the representation of 3D models. They are insensitive to surface noise and can be used in pervasive environment conveniently. We also illustrate how to build up experimental system and simulate 3D shape retrieval in wireless environment

In 1999, Sun et al. proposed a new (t, n) threshold proxy signature scheme based on Zhang's threshold proxy signature scheme. But in 2003 Hsu et al. pointed out that Sun's scheme suffered from a drawback and demonstrated an improvement to counter it. In this paper we point out that Hsu's scheme suffers from an insider attack against their scheme. That is, a malicious proxy signer can forge a valid threshold proxy signature on any message. To thwart this attack, some improvements are further proposed.

The authors created a Web-based integrated education support system that unified the data in the administrative system and the education system in a university. The purpose of the system was to make the administrative system and education system data that had previously been separated seamless, and to implement seamless access from inside and outside the university while maintaining security. Moreover, the authors emphasized the development of a portal site as a point of contact for the system. As a result of using software packages and existing technology for the other servers and databases, and making a policy of not changing the administrative system at all, the authors were able to create the system in a short period of 5 months. After the system was operational, preparation and review for class could be done at home, and evaluations of reports and final determinations of grades could be done from outside the university. This confirmed that the education system was effective. Finally, the authors looked at the trouble and performance problems that occurred involving local rules in the business department during operation, as well as countermeasures for them. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Long hours of automobile driving under monotonous situations may cause the lowering of what we term a driver's activation state (DAS) or in other words the production of drowsiness, resulting in an increased risk of a traffic accident. There is therefore a need to create a newly advanced system focused on the DAS in-car, hopefully thus avoiding potentially dangerous situations. In order to develop such a system as a final goal, we have firstly set out to acquire such cardiovascular variables as beat-by-beat blood pressure (BP), RR interval from ECG and normalized pulse volume (NPV) used as a peripheral vascular tone of alpha-adrenergic sympathetic activity, during presentation to the driver of a screen movie simulating monotonous travel at constant speed on a test-course. Subsequently, we have investigated the reactivity in terms of the driver's cardiovascular hemodynamics. Through the successful monitoring of cardiovascular parameters during the movie presentation obtained in 11 healthy male subjects, the following results were obtained: The monotonous driving produces a statistically significant gradual rise in BP following drowsiness, which could be explained by enhancement of sympathetic activity using a time-frequency analysis of BP and RR. This finding strongly indicates that continuous driving in such monotonous situations can make a driver considerably stressful and thus may cause a gradual increase in BP, and that this gradual BP increase may be used as a possible index relevant to the DAS. This finding was also confirmed by the analysis of NPV, suggesting that the gradual increase in BP during the monotonous driving would be rather caused by a regulation of peripheral vasomotor constriction

We present the use of the polysaccharide chitosan for immobilizing biomolecules on microfabricated device surfaces. The main advantages of chitosan are its abundance of primary amine groups and its ability to be electrodeposited. Biomolecules are easily attached to chitosan 's amines by standard glutaraldehyde chemistry. The electrodeposition of chitosan allows accurate spatial and temporal control of biomolecule placement. We have demonstrated this biofunctionalization method for two different bioMEMS devices: a biophotonic sensor and a micromechanical biosensor. We have successfully assembled probe DNA on each of them and detected hybridization with target DNA as a demonstration of sensor operation. Here, we briefly present the fabrication procedure and testing results for both of these bioMEMS sensing devices

Protocol stacks for small devices like mobile phones have to fulfill multiple functions in different environments. This has lead to highly complex solutions with alternative stacks. It is more economical to construct new stacks from building blocks on the fly depending on the current requirements. Such an adaptive architecture is an example of an organic computing system. In this paper we show how a proposed monitoring architecture for adaptive protocol stacks fits into the observer/controller pattern of organic computing. The protocol stack framework and the observer/controller pattern are briefly described. Subsequently the observer/controller pattern is mapped onto the framework architecture. Two implementations for monitoring agents are described, a finite state machine solution and a fuzzy classifier approach. The fuzzy classifier system is described in detail. It is shown that a finite state machine and a standard Markovian classifier system can be generalised into a non-Markovian learning classifier system, combining the advantages of both parents. The use of loosely coupled vision and its application for computational grids was discussed. A grid was based on standard, open, and general-purpose interfaces and protocols. The interfaces and protocols provide some level of quality of service, in terms of security, throughput, response time, or the coordinated use of different resource types. The results show that grid is not subject to centralized control.

Due to the existence of strong correlation between database metrics and response times, an online discovery quantitative models system of web service management with the linear least-squares regression algorithms was proposed. The model used the stepwise linear regression algorithms to choose a particular subset from the numerous metrics as the explanatory variables of the model, so it can be updated continuously in response to the changes made in provider configurations and the evolution of business demands. The simulation experiment for Oracle Universal Database under a TPC-W workload chose three most influential metrics that weight 66% of the variability of response *** results show that the effectiveness of quantitative model constructing system and model constructing algorithms. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
