Initializing a background model requires robust statistical methods as the task should be robust against random occurrences of foreground objects, as well as against general image noise. The median has been employed for the problem of background initialization. However, the median has only a breakdown point of 50%. In this paper, we propose a new robust method which can tolerate more than 50% of noise and foreground pixels in the background initialization process. We compare our new method with five others and give quantitative evaluations on background initialization. Experiments show that the proposed method achieves very promising results in background initialization.

A maximum-likelihood channel estimator for the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication environments, in presence of interference is discussed here. We study a training based scenario, where the channel is estimated based on pilots that precede the transmission of the information. To reduce the number of estimation parameters, we estimate the channel iteratively in timedomain. Since interference from other users provides no useful information we do not estimate parameters of the interference and neither we neglect the affect of the interference instead interference along with Gaussian noise is perceived as non-Gaussian noise. The algorithm assumes no apriori knowledge about the interfering channel and signal at the receiver, further no-assumption on the statistical properties of the interferer is assumed which makes this algorithm robust. The estimated channel information along with the estimated distribution are then utilized to equalize the subsequent data blocks.

An architecture for online discovery quantitative models system of service performance management was proposed. The system was capable of constructing the quantitative models without prior knowledge of the managed elements. The model can be updated continuously in response to the changes made in provider configurations and the evolution of business demands. Due to the existence of strong correlation between the distributed service metrics and response times, a linear and a hyper-linear quantitative models are constructed, which respectively use the stepwise multiple linear regression and genetic programming algorithms. The simulation results show that the effectiveness of quantitative model constructing system and model constructing algorithms.

At large-scale urban earthquake disaster, the human search and the information collection are the most important process of rescue activities. This research develops the balloon-cable driven robot for information acquisition from sky at crushed structures at landslide caused by huge earthquake. The balloon, which hangs up several sensors (sensor unit, SU), uses "a natural shape balloon". Three cables are connected to the SU, and the balloon with sensors is driven by expansion and contraction of the cables length. Moreover, we propose the human search system by electromagnetic waves. Recently, a lot of people have cellphones or mobile devices.
