A hybrid dark-active address-event representation (AER) imager has been designed, simulated and laid out in a commercially available 0.5 /spl mu/m CMOS process. The imager comprises a 16 /spl times/ 16 array of tunable active pixels each of which is approximately 33 /spl times/ 30 /spl mu/m/sup 2/ in area, with a 19% fill factor. It operates both in: (1) an imaging mode; and (2) a "dark" AER mode wherein the individual pixels asynchronously generate voltage pulses, or spikes, when the incident light on a pixel falls below a user defined threshold. In the dark AER mode, individual pixels sense whether they are occluded (dark), or not, by integrating the difference between the photocurrent and a tunable bias current onto the photodiode junction capacitance. Charge accumulates on an occluded photodiode because the photocurrent is smaller than the bias current. The capacitor voltage is then buffered by a source follower and, for a dark photodiode, increases until it crosses the threshold of a CMOS inverter, whereupon it is converted into a logic "high" event. As these dark digital events arise, their row and column addresses are priority encoded in real-time and then multiplexed together for serial readout. Simulations indicate that events are reliably generated at 1 ms and that data readout rates can operate efficiently several orders of magnitude faster.

This work gives an introduction to the research area of organic computing and shows chances, opportunities and problems currently tackled by researchers. First the visions that lead to this research area are discussed briefly. It is shown that the notion of emergence, a central phenomenon in organic computing, is a typical bottom-up effect with the interesting property of generating order from randomness. The classical design, however, is a top-down process. This apparent contradiction can be overcome by introducing so-called observer/controller architectures leading to the possibility to controlled emergence. The paper concludes with a description of current research problems in organic computing.

We introduce a modular and reconfigurable software framework for protocol stacks implemented in platform independent manner. Simulation tools useful for software validations are introduced and a new distributed, three-staged procedure for validation of protocol stack software is proposed. Assertion-based virtual prototyping (based on nonresident assertions), utilising simulation of hardware software co-systems as well as software probes containing code-resident assertions are used in the proposed validation process.

At large-scale urban earthquake disaster, human search is the most important process in rescue activities. This research develops a parallel cable-driven robot focusing on information acquisition from sky at crushed structures at landslide caused by huge earthquake. This robot is driven by multiple cables to move a sensor head with 6 degrees of freedom. This paper proposes the concept of this new search system, and illustrates usefulness of the human body searching strategy by several experimental results.

The final goal of this research is to develop a mobile system to collect 3D information and panoramic image in rubble to search human bodies and situation in the rubble. This system has abilities to collect and deliver information and cooperate with other robots etc. As a part of this project, multiple CMOS cameras are integrated in a sensor head, and software for generating panorama image and distance information is developed.

Existing acoustic systems commonly used in fisheries and zooplankton surveys are based on pulsed perturbation technique. This work applies binary maximum-length sequences (MLS) as periodic perturbation signals for sonar systems. Using MLS of pseudo-random nature, much higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), while keeping a similar spatial resolution as that using pulsed perturbation can be obtained. A fast algorithm, exploiting the fast Hadamard transform, is implemented for an efficient post-processing of target responses. After a brief introduction of MLS fundamentals and a fast m-sequence-based algorithm, this paper will discuss preliminary experimental results conducted in underwater environment using an experimental model.

The accuracy of concrete strength inspection has a great influence on the safety evaluation of the building. In order to increase the accuracy, Fuzzy Neural Network (FNN) was built up to evaluate concrete stmngth: It takes full advantage of the characteristics of the common concrete testing methods: drill and rebound, and the abilities of FNN including automatic learning, generation and fuzzy logic inference. The experiment shows that the max relative error of the predicted results is 1.12%, which is satisfied with the requirements of the engineering. The method effieieatly maps the complex non-linear relationship between the drill values and the rebound values, and provides a efficient way for the concrete strength inspection and evaluation.

This paper presents a recurrent neural network-based approach for modal parameters identification of structure-unknown systems. The proposed approach involves two steps. The first step is to build a recurrent neural network to map the complex nonlinear relation between the excitations and responses of the structure-unknown system by off-line learning. The second step is to propose a procedure to determine the modal parameters of the system from the trained neural networks. The dynamic characteristics of the structure are directly evaluated from the weighting matrices of the trained recurrent neural network. Furthermore, an illustrative example demonstrates the feasibility of using the proposed method to identify modal parameters of structure-unknown systems. The method proposed can be used to research on fault diagnosis of engineer structure.
