This article investigates the adaptive resource allocation scheme for digital twin (DT) synchronization optimization over dynamic wireless networks. In our considered model, a base station (BS) continuously collects factory physical object state data from wireless devices to build a real-time virtual DT system for factory event analysis. Due to continuous data transmission, maintaining DT synchronization must use extensive wireless resources. To address this issue, a subset of devices is selected to transmit their sensing data, and resource block (RB) allocation is optimized. This problem is formulated as a constrained Markov process (CMDP) problem that minimizes the long-term mismatch between the physical and virtual systems. To solve this CMDP, we first transform the problem into a dual problem that refines RB constraint impacts on device scheduling strategies. We then propose a continual reinforcement learning (CRL) algorithm to solve the dual problem. The CRL algorithm learns a stable policy across historical experiences for quick adaptation to dynamics in physical states and network capacity. Simulation results show that the CRL can adapt quickly to network capacity changes and reduce normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) between physical and virtual states by up to 55.2%, using the same RB number as traditional methods. © 2025 IEEE. Communications satellite network (CSN), as an integral component of the next generation of communication systems, has the capability to offer services globally. Data transmission in this network primarily relies on two modes: inter-satellite communication and satellite-to-ground station communication. The latter directly impacts the successful reception of data by users. However, due to resource and task limitations, finding a satisfactory solution poses a significant challenge. The communication satellite-ground station network scheduling problem (CS-GSNSP) aims to optimize CSN effectiveness by devising a plan that maximizes link construction time while considering constraints associated with satellite operation modes. The large number of tasks and numerous constraints in the problem result in a time-consuming evaluation of fitness function values. To address this issue, we propose a fuzzy fitness evaluation method (FFEM) that employs fuzzy or real evaluation methods based on individual similarity degrees. Additionally, we introduce an evolutionary algorithm based on FFEM, called evolutionary algorithm based on FFEM (FFEEA), for iteratively searching high-quality network construction schemes. In FFEEA, an adaptive crossover approach is used for efficient population search. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate that our proposed fuzzy fitness evaluation method and other improvement strategies significantly enhance satellite network service time. The study introduces a novel approach to enhance the efficiency of solving combinatorial optimization problems, such as CS-GSNSP, by mitigating the complexity associated with fitness evaluation. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Video-based gait recognition has achieved impressive results in constrained scenarios. However, visual cameras neglect human 3D structure information, which limits the feasibility of gait recognition in the 3D wild world. Instead of extracting gait features from images, this work explores precise 3D gait features from point clouds and proposes a simple yet efficient 3D gait recognition framework, termed LidarGait. Our proposed approach projects sparse point clouds into depth maps to learn the representations with 3D geometry information, which outperforms existing point-wise and camera-based methods by a significant margin. Due to the lack of point cloud datasets, we build the first large-scale LiDAR-based gait recognition dataset, SUSTech1K, collected by a LiDAR sensor and an RGB camera. The dataset contains 25,239 sequences from 1,050 subjects and covers many variations, including visibility, views, occlusions, clothing, carrying, and scenes. Extensive experiments show that (1) 3D structure information serves as a significant feature for gait recognition. (2) LidarGait outperforms existing point-based and silhouette-based methods by a significant margin, while it also offers stable cross-view results. (3) The LiDAR sensor is superior to the RGB camera for gait recognition in the outdoor environment. The source code and dataset have been made available at https://***.

This study is concerned with a control system design method with frequency response data named a finite number of frequency responses(an FNFR) model. In this paper a numerical descent direction is introduced and an iterative method for solving control problems formulated with the FNFR model is proposed with the descent direction. One feature of our approach is to update controller variables so that they approach to a feasible region of considering control problems from the outside. The efficiency of our method is shown by numerical examples.

Deep Learning Approaches for Battery Capacity and State of Charge Estimation with the NASA B0005 Dataset

Accurate capacity and State of Charge (SOC) estimation are crucial for ensuring the safety and longevity of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles. This study examines ten machine learning architectures, Including Deep Belief Network (DBN), Bidirectional Recurrent Neural Network (BiDirRNN), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), and others using the NASA B0005 dataset of 591,458 instances. Results indicate that DBN excels in capacity estimation, achieving orders-of-magnitude lower error values and explaining over 99.97% of the predicted variable’s variance. When computational efficiency is paramount, the Deep Neural Network (DNN) offers a strong alternative, delivering near-competitive accuracy with significantly reduced prediction times. The GRU achieves the best overall performance for SOC estimation, attaining an R 2 of 0.9999, while the BiDirRNN provides a marginally lower error at a slightly higher computational speed. In contrast, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Radial Basis Function Networks (RBFN) exhibit relatively high error rates, making them less viable for real-world battery management. Analyses of error distributions reveal that the top-performing models cluster most predictions within tight bounds, limiting the risk of overcharging or deep discharging. These findings highlight the trade-off between accuracy and computational overhead, offering valuable guidance for battery management system (BMS) designers seeking optimal performance under constrained resources. Future work may further explore advanced data augmentation and domain adaptation techniques to enhance these models’ robustness in diverse operating conditions.

Understanding clinical features and risk factors associated with COVID-19 mortality is needed to early identify critically ill patients, initiate treatments and prevent mortality. A retrospective study on COVID-19 patients referred to a tertiary hospital in Iran between March and November 2020 was conducted. COVID-19-related mortality and its association with clinical features including headache, chest pain, symptoms on computerized tomography (CT), hospitalization, time to infection, history of neurological disorders, having a single or multiple risk factors, fever, myalgia, dizziness, seizure, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and anorexia were investigated. Based on the investigation outcome, decision tree and dimension reduction algorithms were used to identify the aforementioned risk factors. Of the 3008 patients (mean age 59.3 ± 18.7 years, 44% women) with COVID-19, 373 died. There was a significant association between COVID-19 mortality and old age, headache, chest pain, low respiratory rate, oxygen saturation < 93%, need for a mechanical ventilator, having symptoms on CT, hospitalization, time to infection, neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases and having a risk factor or multiple risk factors. In contrast, there was no significant association between mortality and gender, fever, myalgia, dizziness, seizure, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and anorexia. Our results might help identify early symptoms related to COVID-19 and better manage patients according to the extracted decision tree. The proposed ML models identified a number of clinical features and risk factors associated with mortality in COVID-19 patients. These models if implemented in a clinical setting might help to early identify patients needing medical attention and care. However, more studies are needed to confirm these findings. © 2023, The Author(s).

Analyzing the behaviors of pedestrians and cyclists in interactions with autonomous systems using controlled experiments: A literature review

Urban transportation is set to undergo a profound transformation with the advent of autonomous systems such as autonomous vehicles, automated buses, and sidewalk delivery robots. To promote safe, sustainable, and inclusive urban mobility, understanding and predicting the behaviors of pedestrians and cyclists, including their intentions, decisions, and movements, when they interact with autonomous systems becomes crucial. Gaining a thorough understanding of these complex interactions can not only improve the safety, efficiency, and acceptance of autonomous systems but also enhance the design and implementation of these technologies. Through a comprehensive review of the literature spanning the years 2014 to 2023, we identify 99 articles that empirically investigate the interactions of humans and autonomous systems. Based on our overview of progress and challenges within this field, we further identify five research gaps that future research should address to enhance human-autonomous system interactions, including: (1) scaling up experimental scenarios to multi-user and multi-modal setups to better represent real-world challenges, (2) emphasizing safety-critical scenarios that are difficult to achieve in real-world environments by applying virtual reality, (3) incorporating diverse behavioral data from the human perspective to deepen the understanding of vulnerable road user behavior and decisions, (4) embracing continuous and real-time interaction to better predict dynamic future environments, and (5) enhancing the generalization ability to ensure realism and broad applicability. This review article offers valuable insights for the growing human-autonomous system research community, specifically those interested in leveraging controlled experiments to enhance the understanding and prediction of pedestrians' and cyclists' behaviors in future urban environments.

We address distributed learning problems, both nonconvex and convex, over undirected networks. In particular, we design a novel algorithm based on the distributed Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to address the challenges of high communication costs, and large datasets. Our design tackles these challenges i) by enabling the agents to perform multiple local training steps between each round of communications;and ii) by allowing the agents to employ stochastic gradients while carrying out local computations. We show that the proposed algorithm converges to a neighborhood of a stationary point, for nonconvex problems, and of an optimal point, for convex problems. We also propose a variant of the algorithm to incorporate variance reduction thus achieving exact convergence. We show that the resulting algorithm indeed converges to a stationary (or optimal) point, and moreover that local training accelerates convergence. We thoroughly compare the proposed algorithms with the state of the art, both theoretically and through numerical results. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In recent years, the Mekong River Basin (MRB), one of the largest river basins in Southeast Asia, has experienced severe impacts from extreme droughts and floods. Streamflow forecasting has become crucial for effective risk management strategies in the region. However, this task presents significant challenges due to rapid climate changes and the presence of numerous newly constructed upstream dams, which disrupt the natural flow. In this paper, we develop multiple deep learning models (incl. Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Long short-term Memory (LSTM), and Transformer) to predict streamflow with different lead time forecasts based on observed meteorological variables and climatic indices (i.e., discharge, water level, precipitation, and temperature) from 1979 to 2019. The results indicate that LSTM obtains high performance for streamflow prediction in both dry and wet seasons while Transformer is not recommended for long-term prediction, especially in the dry season. The proposed deep learning models capture well the fluctuation of river flow in the MRB during the period of high-dam development, especially LSTM (NSE ≥ 0.8). The models' performances are enhanced with the adding of temperature for short-term prediction while precipitation was the most sensitive variable for long-term one. Such proposed models are essential for government agencies to plan mitigation and adaptation strategies at different periods, which can range from days to years. © 2013 IEEE.
