The VHF Band III spectrum (174-230 MHz), recognized for its low utilization, was opened by the FCC in 2002 for opportunistic use by communication technologies. This paper presents a quantitative analysis of the availability of VHF Band III for cognitive radio CR access in Malaysia. Measurements were conducted over a week in 18 Malaysian cities to analyze spectrum utilization and received signal strength, alongside the impact of broadcasts from neighboring countries. The findings highlight actual utilization patterns and reveal the spectrum’s potential for opportunistic access, especially post-digital switchover (DSO).

One of the problems faced by engineering and science students is focusing solely on technical knowledge while needing more cultural context. In today's interconnected world, addressing global challenges necessitates collaborative efforts from individuals across nations. Accordingly, a joint course between Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and the Tokyo institute of Technology in Japan has been established. The recent theme of the course, “Gamification towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” aimed to foster global citizenship and address SDGs through multicultural collaboration. This study examines the similarities and differences in problem identification between Thai and Japanese student groups participating in the course. Data was collected from discussions, presentations, and group assignments throughout the course. The findings indicate that while both groups share common concerns, such as waste management, language barriers, and transportation issues, their perspectives and proposed solutions are influenced by cultural characteristics. Thai students emphasized infrastructural inadequacies and local traditions, whereas Japanese students focused on efficiency and the impacts of tourism. The study highlights the importance of understanding cultural nuances in collaborative international projects to achieve effective and innovative solutions to global challenges.

Visible light positioning (VLP) is a promising positioning technique, which, however, typically requires multiple luminaires to achieve accurate positioning. This paper proposes a novel visual odometry (VO) assisted visible light positioning algorithm (VO-VLP) in achieving positioning with only a single luminaire. In the considered model, a user equipped with a camera jointly uses geometric features in the captured images and coordinates information obtained via visible light communication (VLC) for positioning. The proposed VLP algorithm does not rely on any extra inertial measurement unit and relaxes the tilted angle limitation at the user. In particular, VO-VLP first uses the circle feature of a luminaire to obtain dual normal vectors of the luminaire. Then, the basic principle of VO is used to eliminate the wrong normal vector by exploiting the geometric features in two consecutive images captured when the user moves. Finally, the pose and location of the user are obtained by using an artificially marked point on the luminaire's contour. VO-VLP can achieve accurate positioning with only a single luminaire and a camera. Simulation results show that the proposed indoor positioning algorithm can achieve a 97th-percentile positioning accuracy of around 10 cm.

Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze continued...challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations.
