Digital twins, the cornerstone of Industry 4.0, replicate real-world entities through computer models, revolutionising fields such as manufacturing management and industrial automation. Recent advances in machine learning provide data-driven methods for developing digital twins using discrete-time data and finite-depth models on digital computers. However, this approach fails to capture the underlying continuous dynamics and struggles with modelling complex system behaviour. Additionally, the architecture of digital computers, with separate storage and processing units, necessitates frequent data transfers and Analogue-Digital (A/D) conversion, thereby significantly increasing both time and energy costs. Here, we introduce a memristive neural ordinary differential equation (ODE) solver for digital twins, which is capable of capturing continuous-time dynamics and facilitates the modelling of complex systems using an infinite-depth model. By integrating storage and computation within analogue memristor arrays, we circumvent the von Neumann bottleneck, thus enhancing both speed and energy efficiency. We experimentally validate our approach by developing a digital twin of the HP memristor, which accurately extrapolates its nonlinear dynamics, achieving a 4.2-fold projected speedup and a 41.4-fold projected decrease in energy consumption compared to state-of-the-art digital hardware, while maintaining an acceptable error margin. Additionally, we demonstrate scalability through experimentally grounded simulations of Lorenz96 dynamics, exhibiting projected performance improvements of 12.6-fold in speed and 189.7-fold in energy efficiency relative to traditional digital approaches. By harnessing the capabilities of fully analogue computing, our breakthrough accelerates the development of digital twins, offering an efficient and rapid solution to meet the demands of Industry 4.0. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

OpenGait: Revisiting Gait Recognition Toward Better Practicality

Gait recognition is one of the most critical long-distance identification technologies and increasingly gains popularity in both research and industry communities. Despite the significant progress made in indoor datasets, much evidence shows that gait recognition techniques perform poorly in the wild. More importantly, we also find that some conclusions drawn from indoor datasets cannot be generalized to real applications. Therefore, the primary goal of this paper is to present a comprehensive benchmark study for better practicality rather than only a particular model for better performance. To this end, we first develop a flexible and efficient gait recognition codebase named OpenGait. Based on OpenGait, we deeply revisit the recent development of gait recognition by re-conducting the ablative experiments. Encouragingly,we detect some unperfect parts of certain prior woks, as well as new insights. Inspired by these discoveries, we develop a structurally simple, empirically powerful, and practically robust baseline model, GaitBase. Experimentally, we comprehensively compare GaitBase with many current gait recognition methods on multiple public datasets, and the results reflect that GaitBase achieves significantly strong performance in most cases regardless of indoor or outdoor situations. Hierarchical Nb2o5@Zno Hetero-Branched Nanorods for Enhanced H2s Gas Sensing

Hierarchical Nb 2 O 5 @ZnO hetero-branched nanorods used for highly responsive, selective, and stable hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) sensors were synthesized through a sequential process combining a hydrothermal method, atomic-layer-deposition processing, and modified hydrothermal processing for branching ZnO nanowires. The Nb 2 O 5 @ZnO hetero-branched nanorod sensors exhibited a great response (R a /R g ) of 6.10 towards 20 ppm H 2 S at an optimal working temperature of 400 o C, whose resistance changing rate (~5.10) was 39.2- and 1.9-fold those of Nb 2 O 5 (~0.13) and Nb 2 O 5 @ZnO core-shell nanorod (~2.74) sensors, respectively. The heterojunction formed at the Nb 2 O 5 @ZnO interface and the characteristic reaction between ZnO and H 2 S effectively improved H 2 S sensing performance. Moreover, the branching of ZnO nanowires introduced abundant homojunctions and prominently enlarged the specific surface area, further increasing the response of hetero-branched sensors. Meanwhile, the Nb 2 O 5 @ZnO hetero-branched sensors maintained steady performance over a month, indicating good stability and repeatability. In a word, such hierarchical Nb 2 O 5 @ZnO hetero-branched nanorod gas sensors are promising for the development of sensitive and selective H 2 S detection. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Precise calibration is the basis for the vision-guided robot system to achieve high-precision operations. systems with multiple eyes (cameras) and multiple hands (robots) are particularly sensitive to calibration errors, such as micro-assembly systems. Most existing methods focus on the calibration of a single unit of the whole system, such as poses between hand and eye, or between two hands. These methods can be used to determine the relative pose between each unit, but the serialized incremental calibration strategy cannot avoid the problem of error accumulation in a large-scale system. Instead of focusing on a single unit, this paper models the multi-eye and multi-hand system calibration problem as a graph and proposes a method based on the minimum spanning tree and graph optimization. This method can automatically plan the serialized optimal calibration strategy in accordance with the system settings to get coarse calibration results initially. Then, with these initial values, the closed-loop constraints are introduced to carry out global optimization. Simulation experiments demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm under different noises and various hand-eye configurations. Dealing with resolution variations in dual-temporal remote sensing images is challenging due to differences in sensor capabilities, altitudes, footprints, resampling, and data fusion. Conventional methods for different-resolution change detection struggle to effectively address these challenges, primarily due to insufficient consideration of global and local feature interactions. In this paper, we propose a novel change detection model that leverages the power of multi-scale resolution fusion(MRF). By incorporating the MRF-Block, our approach extracts hierarchical multi-scale features from the input data, enabling effective capture of contextual information at various granularities. This facilitates improved handling of resolution disparities and promotes interactions between global and local features. Experimental evaluations conducted on diverse datasets, demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed model in achieving accurate change detection in dual-temporal remote sensing imagery, even in scenarios characterized by varying resolutions. This paper summarizes the technical activities of a three-year-long IEEE Task Force (TF) on State Estimation (SE) for Integrated Energy systems (IES). It presents the formal definition and characteristics of IES, along with the comprehensive discussion on Electric Power systems (EPS) model, and static and dynamic models associated with heating and natural gas systems. The paper also identifies the barriers of SE for IES, such as estimation modeling, observability analysis, and measurement requirements, together with addressing multi-scale dynamics. An extensive comparative analysis between Integrated Energy systems-State Estimation (IES-SE) and more established Electric Power system-State Estimation (EPS-SE) is presented. The paper also provides future research needs and directions related to IES-SE. © 1969-2012 IEEE.

We propose an enhancement to wholesale electricity markets to contain the exposure of consumers to increasingly large and volatile consumer payments arising as a byproduct of volatile real-time net loads - i.e., loads minus renewable outputs - and prices, both compared to day-ahead cleared values. We incorporate a trade-off, motivated by portfolio optimization methods, between standard day-ahead payments and a robust estimate of such excess payments into the day-ahead computation and specifically seek to account for volatility in real-time net loads and renewable generation. Our model features a data-driven uncertainty set based on principal component analysis, which accommodates both load and wind production volatility and captures locational correlation of uncertain data. To solve the model more efficiently, we develop a decomposition algorithm that can handle nonconvex subproblems. Our extensive experiments on a realistic NYISO data set show that the risk-aware model protects the consumers from potential high costs caused by adverse circumstances. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. In this paper we deal with stochastic optimization problems where the data distributions change in response to the decision variables. Traditionally, the study of optimization problems with decision-dependent distributions has assumed either the absence of constraints or fixed constraints. This work considers a more general setting where the constraints can also dynamically adjust in response to changes in the decision variables. Specifically, we consider linear constraints and analyze the effect of decision-dependent distributions in both the objective function and constraints. Firstly, we establish a sufficient condition for the existence of a constrained equilibrium point, at which the distributions remain invariant under retraining. Morevoer, we propose and analyze two algorithms: repeated constrained optimization and repeated dual ascent. For each algorithm, we provide sufficient conditions for convergence to the constrained equilibrium point. Furthermore, we explore the relationship between the equilibrium point and the optimal point for the constrained decision-dependent optimization problem. Notably, our results encompass previous findings as special cases when the constraints remain fixed. To show the effectiveness of our theoretical analysis, we provide numerical experiments on both a market problem and a dynamic pricing problem for parking based on real-world data.
