Self-Adjusting Network Slicing for Dynamic Heterogeneous Task Offloading in UAV-Enabled Mobile Edge Computing

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled mobile edge computing (MEC) has received wide attention for its ability to significantly reduce latency with flexible mobile aerial nodes. However, the existing works merely consider a fixed periodic network slicing and usually neglect the characterization of computing tasks in practical applications. Motivated by this, we envision a novel scenario where the dynamics and heterogeneity of users and tasks are considered in UAV-enabled MEC networks. We propose a novel self-adjusting two-timescale network slicing scheme based on the internal mechanism in deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to automatically determine whether and when network slicing needs to be reconstructed. Such a novel scheme balances reconstruction cost and system performance compared with traditional fixed schemes. We build an optimization to minimize total system cost for joint UAV trajectory planning and resource allocation at both network and user slice levels. To tackle this problem, we design a novel self-adjusting two-timescale proximal policy optimization (PPO) algorithm that utilizes the property of the critic network, referred to as SaTPPO. Experiment results manifest the effectiveness of the proposed SaTPPO, and it has a lower system cost than the traditional fixed schemes. Moreover, the proposed SaTPPO outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines concerning effectiveness and efficiency. © 2015 IEEE.

Variable petri nets for mobility

Mobile computing systems, service-based systems and some other systems with mobile interacting components have recently received much attention. However, because of their characteristics such as mobility and disconnection, it is difficult to model and analyze them by using a structure-fixed model. This work proposes a new Petri net model called Variable Petri Net (VPN) for modeling and analyzing these systems. The definition, firing rule, and related analysis technology of VPN are introduced in detail. In a VPN, the possible interaction interfaces are abstracted as a new kind of places called virtual places, and the occurrences of (dis)connections are described by new functions, which makes it appropriate to describe the component collaboration in systems and realize the scalability and pluggability of systems. Moreover, to overcome the shortcoming that markings cannot reflect link capability of a system, VPNs add a constraint function along with a marking to represent a complete system configuration. Integrated carbon and nitrogen management for cost-effective environmental policies in China

Carbon and nitrogen are central elements in global biogeochemical cycles. To effectively manage carbon and nitrogen in China, we developed a comprehensive model for quantifying their fluxes, investigating their interplay across 16 human and natural subsystems. Between 1980 and 2020, nitrogen losses in China increased 2.3-fold and carbon emissions surged 6.5-fold. Integrated carbon and nitrogen management holds the potential for a 74% reduction in nitrogen losses to air and water and a 91% decrease in carbon emissions to the atmosphere by 2060. Compared with separate control of carbon or nitrogen, integrated management delivers an additional reduction of 1.8 million tons of nitrogen and 26.5 million tons of carbon by 2060, bringing out a 37% decrease in unit abatement cost and a net societal benefit of 1384 billion USD.

Opportunistic Wiretapping/Jamming: A New Attack Model in Millimeter-Wave Wireless Networks

While the millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is robust against the conventional wiretapping attack due to its short transmission range and directivity, this paper proposes a new opportunistic wiretapping and jamming (OWJ) attack model in mmWave wireless networks. With OWJ, an eavesdropper can opportunistically conduct wiretapping or jamming to initiate a more hazardous attack based on the instantaneous costs of wiretapping and jamming. We also provide three realizations of the OWJ attack, which are mainly determined by the cost models relevant to distance, path loss and received power, respectively. To understand the impact of the new attack on mmWave network security, we first develop novel approximation techniques to characterize the irregular distributions of wiretappers, jammers and interferers under three OWJ realizations. With the help of the results of node distributions, we then derive analytical expressions for the secrecy transmission capacity to depict the network security performance under OWJ. Finally, we provide extensive numerical results to illustrate the effect of OWJ and to demonstrate that the new attack can more significantly degrade the network security performance than the pure wiretapping or jamming attack. © 2022, CC BY.

Providing better quality of service is one of the most important goals in medical/healthcare systems. The services provided should have features such as low latency, appropriate geographic distribution, and real-time interaction. Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) technology is one of the solutions to achieve high quality of services with these features. The wearable health monitoring systems which have become popular in the last decade are one of the foundations of achievement to these features. In this paper, the importance of wearable devices under IoMT technology is investigated. There are several reasons for using wearable devices under IoMT technology, such as reducing healthcare costs and long waiting times. Therefore, anyone working on wearable devices needs to have a general understanding of how they are designed and function. In fact, the integration of new devices to monitor and alert patients about their physical health is a promising option for improving health care systems around the world. Overcrowding in medical centers will be prevented by upgrading the facilities for the virtual presence of patients. It can also ensure real-time monitoring and reduce operating costs. In addition, it can accelerate treatment of patients and reduce the cost of investment and increase its coverage.

This paper presents the novel GPU-based parallel strategy for the heuristic algorithms to solve the large-scale Capacited Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). A combination of five improvement heuristic approaches has been used to improve the constructed feasible solution. It is noticed that a large amount of CPU time is spent in the solution improvement phase while improving a feasible solution. We aim to discover an independent part of the improvement heuristic approaches and make it run over the GPU platform simultaneously. The proposed parallel version has been tested on large-scale instances of up to 20000 customers. The parallel version offers speedup up to 176.12 × compared to the corresponding sequential version.

The rapidly increasing penetration of electric vehicles(EVs) in modern metropolises has been witnessed during the past decade, inspired by financial subsidies as well as public awareness of climate change and environment pro-tection. Integrating charging facilities, especially highpower chargers in fast charging stations, into power distribution systems remarkably alters the traditional load flow pattern, and thus imposes great challenges on the operation of distribution network in which controllable resources are rare. On the other hand, provided with appropriate incentives, the energy storage capability of electric vehicle offers a unique opportunity to facilitate the integration of distributed wind and solar power generation into power distribution system. The above trends call for thorough investigation and research on the interdependence between transportation system and power distribution system. This paper conducts a comprehensive survey on this line of research. The basic models of transportation system and power distribution system are introduced,especially the user equilibrium model, which describes the vehicular flow on each road segment and is not familiar to the readers in power system community. The modelling of interdependence across the two systems is *** into account such interdependence, applications ranging from long-term planning to short-term operation are reviewed with emphasis on comparing the description of traffic-power interdependence. Finally, an outlook of prospective directions and key technologies in future research is summarized.

Road traffic noise is a major nuisance and a risk factor of poor health for urban dwellers. A household's exposure to road traffic noise, especially in a high-density city, can be easily modified by the surrounding built environment, i.e., roads, traffic, buildings, and the topography. This leads to high variation in noise exposure between neighboring households. Existing simulation-based studies were limited in accounting for the variation of noise exposure at the household level, which restricted their applications in public health research involving large numbers of participants. This paper describes a novel simulation-based workflow to assess household traffic noise exposure, which consists of 1) a source model to assess road traffic noise levels, 2) a propagation model to simulate noise propagation in complex three-dimensional urban areas, 3) an automation algorithm to process large quantity of simulation runs and data. The workflow has been evaluated using field studies conducted in Sham Shui Po District, Hong Kong, with reasonably good agreements between simulated and measured data. It was then used to assess road traffic noise exposure for a sample of 6158 households enrolled in the FAMILY Cohort, representing Hong Kong's population dwelling in the dense urban areas. Results showed that 83% of sampled households have been exposed to excessive road traffic noise above the World Health Organization (WHO) standard, or 30% above the local standard. The estimated burden of disease is over 45,000 disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) from both high annoyance and sleep disturbance for households in Hong Kong. The study has contributed to the methodologies and datasets in evaluating noise exposure in high-density cities, which can further support urban noise mitigation policies and planning and population-based health studies in the next steps. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd
