On-chip caches are commonly used in computer systems to hide long off-chip memory access latencies. To manage on-chip caches, either software-managed or hardware-managed schemes can be employed. State-of-art accelerators, such as the NVIDIA Fermi or Kepler GPUs and Intel's forthcoming MIC “Knights Landing” (KNL), support both software-managed caches, aka. shared memory (GPUs) or near memory (KNL), and hardware-managed L1 data caches (D-caches). Furthermore, shared memory and the L1 D-cache on a GPU utilize the same physical storage and their capacity can be configured at runtime (same for KNL). In this paper, we present an in-depth study to reveal interesting and sometimes unexpected tradeoffs between shared memory and the hardware-managed L1 D- caches in GPU architecture. In our study, the kernels utilizing the L1 D-caches are generated from those leveraging shared memory to ensure that the same optimizations such as tiling are applied equally in both versions. Our detailed analyses reveal that rather than cache hit rates, the following tradeoffs often have more profound performance impacts. On one hand, the kernels utilizing the L1 caches may support higher degrees of thread-level parallelism, offer more opportunities for data to be allocated in registers, and sometimes result in lower dynamic instruction counts. On the other hand, the applications utilizing shared memory enable more coalesced accesses and tend to achieve higher degrees of memory-level parallelism. Overall, our results show that most benchmarks perform significantly better with shared memory than the L1 D-caches due to the high impact of memory-level parallelism and memory coalescing.

Reply plan is a kind of opposability plan of adversarial plan. It is impossible to design a general reply plan since the adversarial plan is complex and diverse. And the difficulties stem from the facts that reply plan cannot be rehearse. To meet these challenges, this paper presents a reply plan with defense mechanism(RPDM) inspired by the human stress response. The paper views the stress response as a template that can against threats, and exploits such properties to design the RPDM. The paper concludes with a demonstration to illustrate how the RPDM works and discusses potential applications.

This paper addresses the problem of keeping an autonomous marine vehicle in a moving triangular formation by regulating its position with respect to two leader vehicles. The follower vehicle has no prior knowledge of the path described by the leaders but has access to their heading angle and is able to measure inter-vehicle ranges. It is assumed that the distance between the leaders is constant and known. A control strategy is adopted that generates speed and heading commands so as to drive suitably defined along track and cross track errors to zero. The commands are used as input to local inner loops for yaw and speed control. The paper describes the algorithms derived for range-based control and assesses their performance in simulations using realistic models of the vehicles involved. Tests with three autonomous marine vehicles equipped with acoustic modems and ranging devices allow for the evaluation of the performance of the algorithms in a real-world situation.

Much research has been conducted on the effect of management and organizational factors on the productivity of organizations. Furthermore, these factors have been identified as significant during accident investigations for several NASA incidents. This paper presents a probabilistic, causal, reasoning approach to capture and quantify the dependencies between the key characteristics of management and organizational factors and the likelihood of command file errors. Bayesian Belief Networks are used for modeling these dependencies and expert elicitation methods are used for populating these networks. The result is a model that is representative of a significant body of knowledge and is executable for the purpose of decision support and if-then analyses. This model is presented in the context of the existing body of work in managing command file errors at JPL, the body of academic and theoretical research in the field, and the history of NASA accidents and investigations.

A multi-cluster tool is composed of a number of single-cluster tools linked by buffering modules. The capacity of a buffering module can be one or two. Aiming at finding an optimal one-wafer cyclic schedule, this work explores the effect of two-space buffering modules on the performance of a multi-cluster tool. The tool is modeled by a kind of Petri nets. The dynamic behavior of robot waiting and tasks, process modules, and buffers is well captured by the net model. With the model, this work shows that there is always a one-wafer cyclic schedule that reaches the lower bound of the cycle time of a process-dominant tool. Furthermore, a constant-time algorithm is revealed to find such a schedule for the first time for such multi-cluster tools. An illustrative example is given to show the application and power of this new method.

Cooperative behaviors are ubiquitous in nature and human *** is very important to understand the internal mechanism of emergence and maintenance of *** we know now,the offsprings inherit not only the phenotype but also the neighborhood relationship of their *** recent research results show that the interactions among individuals facilitate survival of cooperation through network reciprocity of clustering *** paper aims at introducing an inheritance mechanism of neighborhood relationship to explore the evolution of *** detail,a mathematical model is proposed to characterize the evolutionary process with the above inheritance *** analysis and numerical simulations indicate that high-level cooperation can emerge and be maintained for a wide variety of cost-to-benefit ratios,even if mutation happens during the evolving process.

This paper presents a first approach towards the approximation of the interaction between agents in order to solve distributed dynamic optimization problems in Organic and Autonomic Computing systems. Existing Organic Computing systems based on multiple agents often develop towards a non-optimal solution due to a greedy local optimization of each agent. Obtaining the optimal solution requires to impair the local state of some agents. Therefore, the proposed approach approximates the interaction between agents by predicting how the actions of an agent influence their neighboring agents. The goal is to only choose actions that benefit the community of agents instead of greedy, selfish actions. Exemplarily, a dynamic optimization problem is considered to quantify the effectiveness of the discussed procedure.

One of the key advantages of Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) is their importance for providing cost-efficient broadband connectivity. There are issues for achieving the network connectivity and user coverage, which are related with the node placement problem. In this work, we consider the router node placement problem in WMNs. We want to find the optimal distribution of router nodes in order to provide the best network connectivity and user coverage in a set of uniformly distributed clients. From the simulation results, we conclude that, when the number of mesh clients is small, a small number of mesh routers are needed in order to optimize the size of Giant Component (GC) and number of covered mesh clients (NCMC). However, some of mesh routers can not cover the clients. On the other hand, when the number of mesh clients is big, many mesh routers are needed to optimize the GC and the NCMC. In this case, a mesh router can cover more than one mesh clients.
