EURETILE investigates foundational innovations in the design of massively parallel tiled computing systems by introducing a novel parallel programming paradigm and a multi-tile hardware architecture. Each tile includes multiple general-purpose processors, specialized accelerators, and a fault-tolerant distributed network processor, which connects the tile to the inter-tile communication network. This paper focuses on the EURETILE software design flow, which provides a novel programming environment to map multiple dynamic applications onto a many-tile architecture. The elaborated high-level programming model specifies each application as a network of autonomous processes, enabling the automatic generation and optimization of the architecture-specific implementation. Behavioral and architectural dynamism is handled by a hierarchically organized runtime-manager running on top of a lightweight operating system. To evaluate, debug, and profile the generated binaries, a scalable many-tile simulator has been developed. High system dependability is achieved by combining hardware-based fault awareness strategies with software-based fault reactivity strategies. We demonstrate the capability of the design flow to exploit the parallelism of many-tile architectures with various embedded and high performance computing benchmarks targeting the virtual EURETILE platform with up to 192 tiles.

During the panel session at the OCL workshop, the OCL community discussed, stimulated by short presentations by OCL experts, potential future extensions and improvements of the OCL. As such, this panel discussion continued the discussion that started at the OCL meeting in Aachen in 2013 and on which we reported in the proceedings of the last year's OCL workshop. This collaborative paper, to which each OCL expert contributed one section, summarises the panel discussion as well as describes the suggestions for further improvements in more detail.

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

This paper studies an approach to enhance the trust in the widespread use of Body Sensor Networks (BSN) in Healthcare. To address the wide variety in medical indications and differences between patients, we assume that such BSNs are programmable and highly flexible in their functionality. Yet this opens a vulnerability to malicious attacks and intrusion of the patient's privacy. We study the work flow in a typical medical scenario, we map the (implied or evidence-based) trust relations and we use this to propose a scheme for verifying the authenticity and trustworthiness without prohibitively interfering with common practices. Our proposed framework is currently being refined in the VITRUVIUS project, for instance to test the feasibility of its implementation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Some tools for calculating CO2 emissions have been developed for housing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). However, these present tools are hard to assess a direct impact of resident such as health risk and amenity. It is considered that the tool that can assess the direct impact of residents can be helpful in checking up the cost-effectiveness on a personal level during the housing design. In this study, we propose a new LCA tool that is based on the Life-cycle Impact assessment Method using by Endpoint modeling (LIME) developed by The National institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and introduce a part of the LCA tool experimentally. This proposed LCA tool considers the method of existing earthquake risk management and human health risk assessment such as disability-adjusted life years (DALY) by WHO. Also, it is embedded in a function to estimate by buildup approach. The final cost is obtained by integrating the required cost (internal cost) with damage to environment and human health (external cost). Additionally, the item that adds to inventory, impact category and category endpoint for calculation of external cost at each stage can be selected. Since the idea of this LCA tool can be helpful for architect and client to determine the direction of housing design, we discuss the convenience of LCA tool in this paper.

This paper presents an optimization procedure used to efficiently maximize the potentials of parallel manipulators with kinematic redundancy within real-time. The proposed approach consists of reducing the search space defined by the optimization problem beforehand, through minimizing the amount of optimization points necessary to induce the optimization problem. Furthermore, the computation time of the fitness function is reduced during run-time. Therefore, the relationship between the Cartesian path of the end-effector and the resulting optimization problem is studied and a procedure to minimize the given dependencies is presented. Exemplarily, a kinematically redundant 3(P)RRR parallel robot is considered to quantify the efficiency of the discussed procedure. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach is able to outperform existing procedures by one to two orders of magnitude.

Runtime reconfigurable architectures based on Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are attractive for realizing complex applications. However, being manufactured in latest semiconductor process technologies, FPGAs are increasingly prone to aging effects, which reduce the reliability of such systems and must be tackled by aging mitigation and application of fault tolerance techniques. This paper presents module diversification, a novel design method that creates different configurations for runtime reconfigurable modules. Our method provides fault tolerance by creating the minimal number of configurations such that for any faulty Configurable Logic Block (CLB) there is at least one configuration that does not use that CLB. Additionally, we determine the fraction of time that each configuration should be used to balance the stress and to mitigate the aging process in FPGA-based runtime reconfigurable systems. The generated configurations significantly improve reliability by fault-tolerance and aging mitigation.

Aiming at a quantitative understanding of basic aspects of pedestrian dynamics, extensive and high-accuracy measurements of real-life pedestrian trajectories have been performed. A measurement strategy based on Microsoft Kinect TM has been used. Specifically, more than 100.000 pedestrians have been tracked while walking along a trafficked corridor at the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. The obtained trajectories have been analyzed as ensemble data. The main result consists of a statistical descriptions of pedestrian characteristic kinematic quantities such as positions and fundamental diagrams, possibly conditioned to the local crowd flow (e.g. co-flow or counter-flow).

In this paper, a cloud manufacturing platform, called AMC (Advanced Manufacturing Cloud), is introduced. The AMC provides several manufacturing-related cloud services to facilitate the users to conduct supporting activities for machine tools and offers intelligent devices which can be plugged in various prediction models for performing predictive applications on machine tools. We first describe the architecture design of the AMC and then present methodologies to how to build cloud services and key mechanisms in the AMC. Finally, we construct a paradigm AMC and practically deploy its cloud services and intelligent devices in a public cloud platform and a factory of our cooperative machine tool company, respectively. We also conduct integrated tests to illustrate the efficacy and merits of the AMC. © 2013 IEEE.
