Because the structure and function of a high-rise building is complex and the density of occupants in it is high, fire safety is still a worldwide difficult problem. Safety and timely evacuation is an important issue under fire in the high-rise buildings. Because it is impossible in fact to do experiments about fire safety evacuation in high-rise buildings, in this paper, a research framework based on the artificial system, computational experiments, and parallel excution (ACP) theory is proposed. First, an evacuation process is considered to compose of two stages including pre-evacuation stage and evacuation stage. Second, artifical men with recognition functions based agent technology is proposed. Finally, computational experiments are designed by using an orthogonal experiment table, and experiment procedure of pre-evacuation stage is given. The idea of systimatic research about the influence of fire control facilities to evacuation is also proposed © 2011 IEEE.

computer science students must be able to support the global software development phenomena;therefore they should enhance their teamwork, communication, negotiation, leadership and collaboration skills. It pushes the educational institutions to rethink the way in which they are transferring the soft skills, e.g. collaboration capabilities, to the new software engineers. Advances in developing platforms, wideband communications, global markets, technological trends and outsourcing promote the conception of a global software engineering. Trying to help address this issue, this paper describes the results of two experiences where a CODILA(Collaborative and Distributed Learning Activity) was used to solve a software engineering problem in a distributed way. These experiences involved students and instructors of eight Latin American universities. We have measured the development of collaboration skills and satisfaction level of computer science students participating in these distributed collaborative practices, and the obtained results are highly encouraging.

computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) is an emerging branch of learning science concerned with studying how people can learn together with the help of computers. As an indispensable ingredient, computer mediation evolves through couples of phases, e.g. centralized server, peer-to-peer network, grid computing. Nevertheless, with daily rising trend on requirement's dynamic changes in service, existing models fall short to respond on demand. Thus, in this paper, by taking advantage of cloud computing, we propose a feasible CSCL platform and the experiments show that it can not only fulfill the basic requirement of CSCL, but also respond to learner's dynamic need on demand. GPUs have recently been explored as a new general-purpose computing platform, which are suitable for the acceleration of compute-intensive EDA applications. In this paper we describe a GPU-based one- to n-detection fault simulator for both stuck-at and transition faults, which demonstrates a 20X speedup over a commercial CPU-based fault simulator. We further show new fault-simulation-based test selection applications enabled by this accelerated fault simulation. Our results demonstrate that the tests selected from the applications achieve higher fault coverages for 1-to-n detections with steeper fault coverage curves, as well as a better delay test quality, in comparison with tests deterministically generated by commercial ATPG tools.

A forest fire has long been a severe threat to the forest resources and human life. The threat could effectively be mitigated by timely and accurate detection. In this paper, we propose a novel accurate forest fire detection system using Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In the proposed system, the detection accuracy is increased by applying the multi-criteria detection that an alarm decision depends on multiple attributes of a forest fire. The multi-criteria detection is implemented by the artificial neural network which fuses sensing data corresponding to multiple attributes of a forest fire into an alarm decision. Due to the utilization of the artificial neural network, the proposed system enjoys low overhead and the self-learning capability. Furthermore, we have developed a prototype consisting TelosB sensor nodes and carried out extensive experiments to study the performance of the proposed system. We have also developed a solar battery in order to persistently power the unattended sensor node deployed in the forest.

ISS (Instruction Set Simulator) plays an important role in pre-silicon software development for ASIP. However, the speed of traditional simulation is too slow to effectively support full-scale software development. In this paper, we propose a hybrid simulation framework which further improves the previous simulation methods by aggressively utilizing the host machine resources. The utilization is achieved by categorizing instructions of ASIP application into two types, namely custom and basic instructions, via binary instrumentation. Then in a way of hybrid simulation, only custom instructions are simulated on the ISS and basic instructions are executed fast and natively on the host machine. We implement this framework for an industrial ASIP to validate our approach. Experimental results show that when the implemented ISS, namely GS-Sim, is applied to practical multimedia decoders, an average simulation speed up to 1058.5MIPS can be achieved, which is 34.7 times of the state-of-art dynamic binary translation simulator and is the fastest to the best of our knowledge.

This paper reports a compact, robust distance-only sensor for networked small robotic platforms. Two methods of sensing distance (neglecting heading) between robots are discussed: Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA). Both implementations make use of a commercially available wireless sensor network board for communication and processing. Although RSSI requires no additional hardware, TDOA requires several additional components including a sound source and microphone. While experimental results indicate that both methods can provide distance sensing within a local neighborhood, TDOA sensing was found to be more robust and accurate, providing 1 cm distance resolution over a range of 80 cm versus 2.4 cm for RSSI. These sensors have been integrated onto mini-robotic platforms by incorporating a heading estimator and controller.

The paper presents the design and implementation of a computational platform that was adopted to support the integration of Transmission systems Operators (TSOs). The primary component is a client-server architecture where the server module is implemented as a collection of services and data. The primary services include server management services for controlling server performance, lookup services for registering and locating application services, and daemon services for performance monitoring and reporting. The platform is enhanced with applications for regional balancing, load flow simulation, and monitoring modules. The client applications access the platform through web services.

Extracting environmental constraints to make reactive system specifications realizable

Many fatal accidents of safety critical reactive systems have occurred in unexpected situations which had not been considered during design and test phases of the systems. To prevent these accidents, reactive systems should be designed to respond appropriately to any requests of any timing from their environments. Verifying this property in specification phase reduces the development costs of safety critical reactive systems. This property of a specification is well known as realizability. If a specification was found not to be realizable, we have to determine the flaws in the unrealizable specification. Unrealizability of a specification arises from arbitrary requirements given by system designers. From a different point of view, it can be thought that the unrealizable specification implicitly imposes a precondition on the behavior of environment, which a system can not control. If it is possible to obtain the precondition in intuitively comprehensive forms, this makes it easy for system designers to understand the cause of flaws in specifications. In this paper, we propose methods for deriving constraints on the behavior of environments, which is implicitly imposed by unrealizable specifications. Instead of realizability, we use strong satisfiability which is a necessary condition for realizability, due to the fact that many practical unrealizable specifications are also strongly unsatisfiable, and strong satisfiability have the advantage of lower complexity for analysis against realizability. These methods derive constraints in propositional linear temporal logic from Büchi automata representing specifications. The expressions of derived constraints are limited to simple and intuitively comprehensive forms where only two temporal operators appear successively. We give proofs for three correctness properties of our methods, i.e. the termination property, the soundness property, and the weakest constraints derivability.
