Because the structure and function of a high-rise building is complex and the density of occupants in it is high, fire safety is still a worldwide difficult problem. Safety and timely evacuation is an important issue under fire in the high-rise buildings. Because it is impossible in fact to do experiments about fire safety evacuation in high-rise buildings, in this paper, a research framework based on the artificial system, computational experiments, and parallel excution (ACP) theory is proposed. First, an evacuation process is considered to compose of two stages including pre-evacuation stage and evacuation stage. Second, artifical men with recognition functions based agent technology is proposed. Finally, computational experiments are designed by using an orthogonal experiment table, and experiment procedure of pre-evacuation stage is given. The idea of systimatic research about the influence of fire control facilities to evacuation is also proposed.

Teaching and learning software engineering have been recognized as important challenges for computer science students and instructors. These challenges become stronger if we consider the distributed software development scenario that is gaining space everyday into the software industry. In order to help address this challenge, this article introduces a Collaborative and Distributed Learning Activity (CODILA). This collaborative activity helps students to reach the professional skills required in the professional work, and instructors to perform such transfer process. The paper also presents and discusses the obtained results from a particular CODILA, which address the challenge of designing a software architecture of a communication infrastructure in a distributed way. Six Latin American universities participated in the activity. The obtained results were satisfactory and indicate these types of experiences can be used to address the stated challenges.

In this article we present an approach for robust multi-object tracking. Typically the task of object tracking can be divided into two subtasks: object detection and object labeling. The main focus of the work presented here is on an approach for consistently labeling objects across a series of video frames using neural networks. Due to the specialization of object detection algortihms it is necessary to divide detection and labeling to enhance their individual skills. In the evaluation we show that the developed labeling is robust against occlusions and can handle low object detection rates. © 2010 IEEE.

Previous work in the research field of Smart Camera (SC) networks intensively focused on algorithms for obtaining vision graphs in distributed camera networks consisting of static camera nodes. Each edge of the vision graph represents two cameras imaging a sufficiently large part of the same environment. In contrast, we propose that future SC networks will consist of static SCs, supported by mobile image providers (e.g. embedded devices equipped with image sensors such as mobile phones). Due to their mobility, location changes (especially turnings changing the direction of view) are very likely. In contrast to position changes, which can be detected by using off-the-shelf GPS sensors, turnings can only be detected by high-cost magnetic compasses. In this paper, we present a lightweight distributed algorithm for estimating turning movements based on visual sensor data and updating the system's vision graph. Our algorithm uses the optical flow as input to compute the turnings. Evaluations on a mobile image provider, consisting of an off-the-shelf embedded device equipped with an IP cam, show that our algorithm is able to estimate the angle of rotation with an accuracy of 80% and performs well in terms of CPU and memory utilization. © 2010 23th International Conference on architecture of Computing systems 2010, ARCS 2010 - Workshop Proceedings. The Organic Computing (OC) Initiative deals with technical systems, that consist of a large number of distributed and highly interconnected subsystems. In such systems, it is impossible for a designer to foresee all possible system configurations and to plan an appropriate system behaviour completely at design time. The aim is to endow such technical systems with the so-called self-X properties, such as self-organisation, self-configuration or self-healing. In such dynamic systems, trust is an important prerequisite to enable the usage of Organic Computing systems and algorithms in market-ready products in the future. The OC-Trust project aims at introducing trust mechanisms to improve and assure the interoperability of subsystems. In this paper, we deal with aspects of organic systems regarding trustworthiness on the subsystem level (agents) in a desktop grid system. We develop an agent-based simulation of a desktop grid to show, that the introduction of trust concepts improves the system's performance, in such that they speed up the processes on the agent level. Specifically, we investigate a bottom-up self-organised development of trust structures that create coalition groups of agents that work more efficiently than standard algorithms. Here, an agent can determine individually to what extent it belongs to a Trusted Community. © 2010 IEEE.

In mathematics, various representations of real numbers have been investigated and all these representations are proved to be mathematically equivalent. Furthermore, it is known that all effective versions of these representations lead to the same class of "computable real numbers". However, when subrecursive (such as primitive recursive) is taken into account, these representations can lead to different notions of "computable real numbers". This paper will look into the polynomial-time version of the problem for computable real numbers under different representations. We will summarize the known results to exhibit the comprehensive hierarchy they form. Our goal is to clarify systematically how the polynomial-time computability depends on the representations of the real numbers. Copyright © 2011 Binary Information Press.

The first successful demonstration of virus-structured, hierarchical electrodes for three-dimensional (3-D) Li-ion microbattery architectures is reported in this paper. The electrodes consist of electroplated gold micropillars and virus-structured nanocomposite materials with a TiO2 anode layer deposited on a nickel-coated viral template. Micropatterning increases the active electrode surface area and electrochemical characterization results verify an improvement in microbattery capacity by up to a factor of four compared to nanostructures alone. © 2011 IEEE.

The Web offers autonomous and frequently useful resources in growing manner. User Generated Content (UGC) like Wikis, Weblogs or Webfeeds often do not have one responsible authorship or declared experts who checked the created content for e.g. accuracy, availability, objectivity or reputation. The user is not able easily, to control the quality of the content he receives. If we want to utilize the distributed information flood as a linked knowledge base for higher-layered applications - e.g. for knowledge transfer and learning - information quality (iq) is a very important and complex aspect to analyze, personalize and annotate resources. In general, low information quality is one of the main discriminators of data sources on the Web [1]. Assessing information quality with measurable terms can offer a personalized and smart view on a broad, global knowledge base. We developed the qKAI application framework [2] to utilize available, distributed data sets in a practically manner. In the following we present our adaption of information quality aspects to qualify Web resources based on a three-level assessment model. We deploy knowledge-related iq-criteria as tool to implement iq-mechanisms stepwise into the qKAI framework. Here, we exemplify selected criteria of information quality in qKAI like relevance or accuracy. We derived assessment methods for certain iq-criteria enabling rich, game-based user interaction and semantic resource annotation. Open Content is embedded into knowledge games to increase the users' access and learning motivation. As side effect the resources' quality is enhanced stepwise by ongoing user interaction.

The MADNESS project aims at the definition of innovative system-level design methodologies for embedded MP-SoCs, extending the classic concept of design space exploration in multi-application domains to cope with high heterogeneity, technology scaling and system reliability. The main goal of the project is to provide a framework able to guide designers and researchers to the optimal composition of embedded MPSoC architectures, according to the requirements and the features of a given target application field. The proposed approach will tackle the new challenges, related to both architecture and design methodologies, arising with the technology scaling, the system reliability and the ever-growing computational needs of modern applications. The methodologies proposed with this project act at different levels of the design flow, enhancing the state-of-the art with novel features in system-level synthesis, architectural evaluation and prototyping. Support for fault resilience and efficient adaptive runtime management is introduced at hardware and middleware level, and considered by the system-level synthesis as one of the optimization factors to be taken into account. This paper presents the first stable results obtained in the MADNESS project, already demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

A low cost battery charger is introduced in this paper. The charging feature meets the requirement of a Li-Ion rechargeable cell designed for electric vehicles and manufactured by E company. The charger is capable of constant current/constant voltage charging strategy, double over current/voltage protection and automatically offloaded with a sound alarm when the charging current is smaller than about 40mA. A detail circuit diagram and its operation principle are proposed and some experimental results are also given. All devices used in the charger circuit are very common and easily purchased. Because of its simple structure only a few modifications are needed to make one's own specific charger. © 2010 WEVA.
