Numerical analysis for four-wave mixing based wavelength conversion of differential phase-shift keying signals

We numerically investigate the main constrains for high efficiency wavelength conversion of differential phase-shift keying （DPSK） signals based on four-wave mixing （FWM） in highly nonlinear fiber （HNLF）. Using multi-tone pump phase modulation techniques, high efficiency wavelength conversion of DPSK signals is achieved with the stimulated BriIlouin scattering （SBS） effects effectively suppressed. Our analysis shows that there is a compromise between conversion efficiency and converted idler degradation. By optimizing the pump phase modulation configuration, the converted DPSK idler＇s degradation can be dramatically decreased through balancing SBS suppression and pump phase modulation degradation. Our simulation results also show that these multi-tone pump phase modulation techniques are more appropriate for the future high bit rate systems.

A low cost battery charger is introduced in this paper. The charging feature meets the requirement of a Li-Ion rechargeable cell designed for electric vehicles and manufactured by E company. The charger is capable of constant current/constant voltage charging strategy, double over current/voltage protection and automatically offloaded with a sound alarm when the charging current is smaller than about 40mA. A detail circuit diagram and its operation principle are proposed and some experimental results are also given. All devices used in the charger circuit are very common and easily purchased. Because of its simple structure only a few modifications are needed to make one's own specific charger. © 2010 WEVA.

Increasing heterogeneous open data is an ongoing trend in the current social semantic Web (s2w). Generic concepts and how-tos for higher-layered reuse of the arbitrary information overload for interactive knowledge transfer and learning - mentioning the Internet of services (IoS) - are not covered very well yet. For further, directed use of distributed services and sources, inquiry, interlinking, analysis, machine- and human-interpretable representation are as essential as lightweight user-oriented interoperation and competency in handling. In the following we introduce the qKAI application framework (qualifying knowledge acquisition and inquiry) - a service-oriented, generic and hybrid approach combining knowledge related offers for convenient reuse and tweaking them with interaction for improved access with rich user experience. qKAI aims at closing some residual gaps between the "sophisticated" semantic Web and "hands-on" Web 2.0 enabling loose-coupled knowledge and information services focussed on knowledge life cycles, learning aspects and handy user interaction.

Latest research results in the areas of computer vision and embedded systems have made way for smart cameras. These cameras use a built-in computing unit to analyse images directly at the CCD sensor. Smart cameras can cooperate in order to analyse scenes from different perspectives and track objects autonomously. In large smart camera systems (also known as distributed vision networks), distributed algorithms are needed that allow for cooperation and self-organization among *** paper focuses on alarm management in distributed vision networks, in which security staff is equipped with mobile terminals. These terminals and cameras are connected via an ad hoc network. We present a robust and lightweight algorithm that allows to notify guards quickly in case serious incidents have happened. This algorithm has been evaluated by simulation experiments and in a modestly sized real world testbed. Results show that the algorithm takes reasonable time to terminate (10s) in a network of 100 cameras.

Open content represents a huge knowledge base in nearly every domain regarding the currently arising social semantic Web. However, weaving these precious resources sustainable into agile knowledge transfer and learning is not lighted very well so far. The focus of this contribution lies on utilizing available, distributed data sets on the Web for vast interactive knowledge transfer and learning. Social educational gaming is instanced to simplify interoperation, to spread knowledge in a handy way and to enhance users' collaboration with open content. Learning aims deal with broaden the users' perspective on available information and resources. Especially fact-related knowledge is assessable in an effective manner this way. Attendance increases through game-based, incentive arrangements like point and level concepts. Confrontation with daily knowledge topics can be immerged through knowledge games for a broad audience. Long-term objective is to establish open content in educational contexts as knowledge base - by enabling a proposal of suitable Web service compositions and a modular construction kit for user-centered interfaces with high functionality and design issues. Overall, we boost open content as an inherent part of higher-layered, lightweight applications in knowledge and information transfer via standard tasks of knowledge engineering and augmented user interaction. Knowledge management concerns interweave with social gaming and collaboration.

This paper describes an approach for object-tracking in large smart camera networks, which is based on software-agents with conflicting goals. The focus is on the system architecture. These software-agents are specialized on concrete functions, e.g. maximizing sensor coverage of a surveillance area by aligning the cameras' fields of view. To reach collaborative behavior, an approach inspired by Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) of the operations research is used.

In this paper, an appearance based image processing method is proposed for target detection, posture estimation, and tracking of 3D objects by Parametric Eigenspace Method embedded particle filter. In this method, the computational cost of Parametric Eigenspace Method and the tracking error can be greatly reduced by using the outputs of previous time and the preliminary knowledge of dynamics of movement of targets for a particle filter. Namely, since the particles of the particle filter can be generated in the direction where the object will be moved by using the posture estimated by Parametric Eigenspace Method for the prediction model, the accuracy of the state estimation of the object can be improved without increasing the number of particles. Therefore, the proposed method uses output result of Particle Filters and Parametric Eigenspace Method recursively and mutually for fast simultaneous execution of detection, posture estimation, and tracking of the targets. Furthermore, we demonstrate validity of our approach by several experiments. © 2009 The institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

We describe a unique competition based on the novel concept of robotics and mechatronics products that included evaluation of the products' engineering function and interface design. Seventy-seven students of eleven teams from seven universities in the Kyushu area participated in the competition, whose subject was " Health care, life supporting and communication or other technical aids for the elderly or disabled." Many of the plans presented ideas that balanced function and design, showing the results of collaboration among students studying engineering and students studying product design. © 2009 SICE.

Active yaw stabilization for passenger vehicles, following driver yaw rate commands with steer-by-wire and rear break force distribution, is discussed. The problem is solved via a decomposition of the vehicle equations of motion into a static, scheduled tyre characteristics map, and an affine Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) plant. Control is provided via a cascade connection of scheduled inverse tyre characteristics and an LPV controller, handling both the nonlinear dynamics an the non-affine tyre characteristics. Excellent tracking results are demonstrated with a high fidelity simulation even in the presence of noise and uncertainty. © 2009 EUCA.

The network file system (NFS) protocol, as the de facto standard for sharing files in a distributed environment, has deployed Infiniband as the underlying transport of sunRPC, namely NFS over RDMA. In the current Read-Write design of NFS over RDMA, NFS write performance is limited for not fully utilizing the features of Infiniband. In this paper, we take on the challenge of enhancing the write performance of NFS. We propose and evaluate a new design of sunRPC over RDMA, namely Write-Write design. To guarantee the security of our design, we propose an HCA-based memory protection extension of Infiniband. Evaluations show that our Write-Write design increases the kernel-to-kernel RPC bandwidth by 15~27%. In real disk test, our Write-Write design gains 15%~22% in multi-client benchmarks compared with the Read-Write design.
