Current multicore graphic processing units (GPUs) architecture designed for parallel data processing, have become applicable for general purpose computation. An example for image content processing is the automated Iris Recognition system stages, which is a highly computation algorithms. Such tasks are based on the extraction of texture features, which are required to analyze iris content. The localization and extraction processes are highly computation intensive and can benefit from the parallel computation power of GPUs. A scalable parallelization is presented for GPU-based localization and feature extraction, with a demonstrated speedup of 9.6 and 14.8 times, respectively, and 12.4 when taking into account this two system stages with our previous work iris matching on GPU stage speed, compared to that of CPU-based version whole system. We specifically implemented an Iris Recognition system based on Daugman's system for training and classification in C#. We executed the CUDA-C code on a NVIDIA GTX 460 Fermi 336 cores card.

A new multi-cell joint channel estimation technique for uplink TD-SCDMA system is proposed. The Channel impulse responses of the serving cell and the effective neighboring cell users will process jointly. The new technique adopts the singular value decomposition criterion to reduce the rank order of the system channel matrix. Depending on a limited number of the real parameters that need it to describe the channel matrix, the estimation process will be efficient and the reduced rank technique can significantly improve the channel estimation accuracy. Simulation results show clearly that the proposed reduced rank estimator can significantly improve the channel estimation accuracy for multi-cell networks under rank-deficient consideration. The mean square error (MSE) measure has shown the validity performance of the proposed estimator over the conventional estimators. In addition, the correlation coefficient measures of the reduced rank estimators have shown slightly the superiority of the proposed technique.

This paper aims to present the design of a cloud computing-based equipment monitoring system (EMS), called CCEMS, for the CNC machine tool industry to illustrate the paradigm shift of EMSs from basing on the Internet to basing on the cloud. In the CCEMS, Graphical User Interface (GUI) plays an important role that allows users to interact with the system for controlling and operating equipment, monitoring equipment performance and statuses, detecting and diagnosing equipment faults, conjecturing production quality and precision of equipment, and so on. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional Web GUIs, this paper proposes a novel Web application implementation framework, called NWAIF, for the CCEMS, by using Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Rich Internet Application (RIA) technology. Finally, a paradigm CCEMS for monitoring CNC machine tools is constructed and used to validate the efficacy of the CCEMS and NWAIF. Testing results show that the paradigm CCEMS meets the desired functional requirements and the GUIs created by using the proposed NWAIF is superior to traditional Web-based GUIs in terms of shorter response times to complete the testing operations.

Nearly 80% of worldwide trade (over US $620 billion) is carried by marine transport. Unfortunately, manually identifying, tracking, and monitoring containers involves a great many logistical problems. The security of container transportation has also become an issue of critical importance, with regard to theft, tracking, tracing, and national security. This paper describes the passive radio frequency identification (RFID) electronic seal (e-seal) monitoring system that was implemented using existing low-cost passive RFID e-seals devices to replace the manual escorts. The system successfully overcame the harsh outdoor environment of Kaohsiung Port, including resistance to high temperature, high salinity, humidity, and typhoons. The system comprises a reader, an e-seal (tag), and an antenna, and its optimal installation architecture is being disclosed in this paper. The reading rate not only has been maintained at levels above 97.4% when a container truck travel passes an RFID reader at a speed of up to 60 kilometers per hour in 0.2 seconds, the system has also maintained normal operation 24 hours a day, year round. The system has moved beyond the testing phase or small-scale pilot project bringing RFID technology to practical operations of large-scale logistics systems. The architecture, procedures, methodologies, and experience involved in the development of this system, deserve consideration as a guide for the future introduction of RFID systems, and can relieve operators from the expensive, time-consuming trial and error involved in the introduction of passive RFID e-seal systems in the container transport industry.
